Not only is Central Union Mission working to end homelessness through our men’s shelter and programs, but we also help prevent homelessness for families through the Family Ministry Center and diverse programs for men, women and children. This annual report summarizes what was accomplished with the help of our generous donors and volunteers in fiscal year 2018. You did more than provide food, clothing and shelter. You helped men acquire jobs. You gave parents food and President Joe Mettimano (right) began his leadership at Central clothing so they could spend their wages on utility bills. You Union Mission with a town hall meeting for guests, media and staff. gave impoverished children their best summer ever at Camp Bennett. You shared the Gospel message. Because of your generosity, you changed lives forever. If you spend yourselves in behalf of Central Union Mission does not use government funding; all the hungry and satisfy the needs of of our support comes from private companies, foundations, churches, civic groups and individual donors like you. We thank the oppressed, then your light will you for your compassion and for your continued support in the rise in the darkness, and your night year ahead. will become like the noonday. Joseph Mettimano Isaiah 58:10 ANNUAL REPORT 2018 3 We served 188,667 nutritious meals at the shelter, with about 200 guests for three meals every day.

Food $7,929,652 worth of food, which provided over three million critically needed meals, was distributed through the Mission’s shelter and Family Ministry Center programs. At the Family Ministry Center this year, we provided over 288,000 bags of groceries to Relief & Restoration and Emergency Relief program members— including individuals, families, parents, seniors and children—as well as to community partners serving other neighbors in need. At the shelter, healthy meals encourage hungry and isolated men experiencing homelessness and help provide hope and a sense of community.

4 CENTRAL UNION MISSION Shelter The Mission’s men’s shelter provided 63,057 bed-nights of training; education; employment placement; clean and safe shelter for men experiencing homelessness, legal support and social services. and 24 newly employed program graduates lived at our The Mission shelter ran at capacity nearly every Gospel Mission House transitional housing. night, housing 170 men, and up to 200 during weather The shelter also offers comprehensive in-house services, emergencies. including: medical, dental and psychiatric care; addiction Together, the men’s shelter and Family Ministry Center recovery; veteran’s support; spiritual direction; vocational distributed $798,859 worth of clothing and household items.

Women, Families and Seniors At the Family Ministry Center, we distribute groceries and clothing, but we also provide a number of services to help keep families at-risk of homelessness off the street, including computer training, legal aid, ESOL classes, Bible studies, life skills classes, services for senior citizens, baby showers, Christmas gifts, Thanksgiving supplies and more. 2200 children in need received Christmas presents, and 480 received backpacks and supplies to start the school year right.

Operation Christmas Miracle donors provided gifts for neighborhood children to make their Christmas bright and to help parents stretch their wages.

Children are ready to learn with Operation Backpack school supplies. ANNUAL REPORT 2018 7 Camp Bennett 312 children spent a week at our Camp Bennett in Brookeville, MD, giving them a nature experience outside of an urban setting and allowing them to make new friends and hear the Gospel message.

Camp Bennett campers slept in cabins, did arts and crafts, made new friends, swam in the pool, interacted with animals; some experienced their first time away from home. 8 CENTRAL UNION MISSION Education and Employment Critical to their future success, 269 people participated in one of the Mission’s Workforce Development & Education programs, which provides opportunities to attain a high school diploma, skill certifications, life-skills, hard and soft job skills and long term employment placement.

Central Union Mission is committed to helping veterans access the care and government-provided services they deserve. Veterans participating in the Restoration & Transformation Program can bunk in the Veteran’s Suite, which provides additional privacy. Ready2Work participant James Shipman is employed with the Clean Team, which keeps the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District and five other business areas attractive and safe. ANNUAL REPORT 2018 9 The Mission provided 13,998 hours of instruction in English literacy, GED/High School Diploma preparation and computer training to shelter residents, students and Family Ministry Center participants.

The 16 Family Ministry Center participants who successfully completed a seven-hour computer training received new laptops from our partner, WildTech. Senior Citizen Fellowships were well-attended with an average of 250 participants monthly at both the English- and Spanish-speaking programs

10 CENTRAL UNION MISSION Through the Mission’s workforce development program and the generosity of Mission partner Passport Auto Group, Khotso Tswaedi began a full-time job with benefits at BMW Passport Auto in Maryland. He is working in the parts shipping and receiving department. Khotso states, “The Mission was not just a place to stay; it was how to find myself and get back my relationship with God again. Anything is possible with God.” Amazingly, what’s possible for Khotso now includes studying cybersecurity at University of Maryland University College this fall. 72 program participants found permanent housing this year, and 119 were employed in jobs outside the Mission.
