Lastly, I need to thank President Donald Trump, if his inflated ego had not driven him into the 2016 race, this thesis would not have been possible. viii ABSTRACT This study will look at agenda setting in the media and how it aided in the spread of Trumpism. Broadcasts of the three major cable news networks were looked at. The constructed-week method was used to produce a sample of 36 shows that represent 12 days during the selected time frame. A descriptive qualitative content analysis was then used to examine the coverage relating to the main themes of the Trump campaign: immigration, terrorism, crime, economic insecurity, and populism. A survey was then conducted to show how the themes found affected voter behavior. The study found that the amount of coverage signaled to the public that Trump was the most important candidate, and the theme of establishment versus anti-establishment painted Trump as the anti-establishment candidate who was battling the powers that be within the Republican Party. 1 CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION The 2016 election cycle was anything but conventional; with reality TV star Donald Trump becoming the presidential nominee of the Republican Party, it left a segment of the public wondering how we came to this state of political affairs. Amongst the confusion, a new term was born: Trumpism. What is Trumpism? According to Dr. David E. Tabachnick of Nipissing University, Trumpism consists of four principles: celebrity, nativism, the outsider persona, and a populist appeal (2016). This study looks for those themes and others including, terrorism, crime, and economic insecurity in the coverage of Trump from the three cable news networks: CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC. For this study, it is also important to look at the candidate being studied in a more meaningful way. This is because the United States has not witnessed the rise of a major-party candidate who espouses both a nativist platform and populist appeal since the Know-Nothing Party of the 1850s and the McCarthy era.     Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. Rapoport Introduction Since our first survey of FreedomWorks subscribers in December 2011, a lot has happened: the 2012 Republican nomination contests, the 2012 presidential and Congressional elections, continuing debates over the budget, Obamacare, and immigration, and the creation of a Republican Party Growth and Opportunity Project (GOP). In all of these, the Tea Party has played an important role. Tea Party-backed candidates won Republican nominations in contested primaries in Arizona, Indiana, Texas and Missouri, and two of the four won elections. Even though Romney was not a Tea Party favorite (see the first report), the movement pushed him and other Republican Congressional/Senatorial candidates (e.g., Orin Hatch) to engage the Tea Party agenda even when they had not done so before. In this report, we will focus on the role of FreedomWorks subscribers in the 2012 nomination and general election campaigns. We’ll also discuss their role in—and view of—the Republican Party as we move forward to 2014 and 2016. This is the first of multiple reports on the March-June 2013 survey, which re-interviewed 2,613 FreedomWorks subscribers who also filled out the December 2011 survey. Key findings: Rallying around Romney (pp. 3-4) Between the 2011 and 2013 surveys, Romney’s evaluations went up significantly from 2:1 positive to 4:1 positive surveys. By the end of the nomination process Romney and Santorum had become the two top nomination choices but neither received over a quarter of the sample’s support.

SUMMARY: This white paper examines President Trump’s campaign to fan distrust of the news media (Fox News excepted) through his tweeting of the phrase “Fake News (Media).” The report identifies and illustrates eight delegitimation techniques found in the twenty-five most retweeted Trump tweets containing that phrase between January 1, 2017 and August 31, 2018. The report also looks at direct responses and public reactions to those tweets, as found respectively on the comment thread at @realdonaldtrump and in random samples (N = 2500) of US computer-based tweets containing the term on the days in that time period of his most retweeted “Fake News” tweets. Along with the high percentage of retweets built into this search, the sample exhibits techniques and patterns of response which are identified and illustrated. The main findings: ● The term “fake news” emerged in public usage in October 2016 to describe hoaxes, rumors, and false alarms, primarily in connection with the Trump-Clinton presidential contest and its electoral result. ● President-elect Trump adopted the term, intensified it into “Fake News,” and directed it at “Fake News Media” starting in December 2016-January 2017. 1 ● Subsequently, the term has been used on Twitter largely in relation to Trump tweets that deploy it.
