Analysis of Talk Shows Between Obama and Trump Administrations by Jack Norcross — 69 An Analysis of the Political Affiliations and Professions of Sunday Talk Show Guests Between the Obama and Trump Administrations Jack Norcross Journalism Elon University Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in an undergraduate senior capstone course in communications Abstract The Sunday morning talk shows have long been a platform for high-quality journalism and analysis of the week’s top political headlines. This research will compare guests between the first two years of Barack Obama’s presidency and the first two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. A quantitative content analysis of television transcripts was used to identify changes in both the political affiliations and profession of the guests who appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” CBS’s “Face the Nation,” ABC’s “This Week” and “Fox News Sunday” between the two administrations. Findings indicated that the dominant political viewpoint of guests differed by show during the Obama administration, while all shows hosted more Republicans than Democrats during the Trump administration. Furthermore, U.S. Senators and TV/Radio journalists were cumulatively the most frequent guests on the programs. I. Introduction Sunday morning political talk shows have been around since 1947, when NBC’s “Meet the Press” brought on politicians and newsmakers to be questioned by members of the press. The show’s format would evolve over the next 70 years, and give rise to fellow Sunday morning competitors including ABC’s “This Week,” CBS’s “Face the Nation” and “Fox News Sunday.” Since the mid-twentieth century, the overall media landscape significantly changed with the rise of cable news, social media and the consumption of online content.

Jack Markell Mr. Roger Ailes Delaware Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President Chair Fox News Channel Gov. Martin O’Malley 1211 Avenue of the Americas Maryland Vice Chair New York, NY 10036 and VIA EMAIL Nathan Daschle Executive Director Dear Mr. Ailes, For the first time in history, your organization is openly and proudly supporting the defeat of Democratic governors with an unprecedented political contribution of $1 million to the Republican Governors Association. In fact, your company provided the single largest corporate contribution to our opposition. In the interest of some fairness and balance, I request that you add a formal disclaimer to your news coverage any time any of your programs cover governors or gubernatorial races between now and Election Day. I suggest that the disclaimer say: “News Corp., parent company of Fox News, provided $1 million to defeat Democratic governors in November.” If you do not add a disclaimer, I request that you and your staff members on the “fair and balanced” side of the network demand that the contribution be returned. As you are well aware, the stakes could not be higher in the 37 gubernatorial races this election cycle. Your corporation and your allies know well that these races have grave and substantial implications for Congressional redistricting. In fact, your allies in the GOP hope to change our election map for decades by electing governors who will redraw 30 seats into Republican territory.

  • Outsmarting the Fox: Gretchen Carlson, Sexual Harassment and A
OUTSMARTING THE FOX: GRETCHEN CARLSON, SEXUAL HARASSMENT, AND A PRE-SUIT ARBITRATION CLAUSE Kent Kauffman Kimberly O’Connor Purdue University Fort Wayne When Fox News confirmed in June 2017 that it had dropped “Fair and Balanced” as its mainstay slogan (Grynbaum, 2017), it signaled the ignominious end of the Roger Ailes era at Fox News. That era outlived Mr. Ailes, who had died a few weeks earlier at the age of 77, after falling in his bathroom (Haberman, 2017). Ailes was Fox News’s co-Founder and president since the cable channel’s 1996 birth, until he resigned in July 2016 (Stelter & Byers, 2016). His abrupt resignation was an initial consequence of the tsunami caused by the sexual harassment lawsuit that former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson filed against him two weeks earlier (Carlson Complaint, 2016). During the interim, Fox News hired a law firm to investigate multiple allegations of sexual harassment levied against Ailes. Some of the accusations had been made by women who felt emboldened to come forward after it was reported that Megyn Kelly, Fox’s first-tier star (and former lawyer), claimed that Ailes had also sexually harassed her (Sherman, 2016). Fox News settled with Carlson a few weeks later and gave her $20 million plus a formal apology (Grynbaum & Koblin, 2016). Not only was the payout huge, but it was also noteworthy that Carlson had never actually sued Fox News. She had only sued Roger Ailes. Why she sued only him, and how, is not only informative about the nature of her employment contract and its binding arbitration clause, but says much about the difficulty many women have combatting sexual harassment in a work setting.

  • William Faulkner and George Washington Harris: Frontier Humor in the Snopes Trilogy
WILLIAM FAULKNER AND GEORGE WASHINGTON HARRIS: FRONTIER HUMOR IN THE SNOPES TRILOGY by Hugh M. Stilley B.A., University of Southern California, 196l A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in the Department of Engli sh We accept this thesis as conforming to the required standard THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA October, I964 In presenting this thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for an advanced degree at the University of British Columbia, I agree that the Library shall make it freely available for reference and study. I further agree that per• mission for extensive copying of this thesis for scholarly purposes may be granted by the Head of my Department or by his representatives,, It is understood that copying or publi• cation of this thesis for financial gain shall not be allowed without my written permission. Department of English The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date September 3. 1965. ABSTRACT The influence of the pre-Civil War Southwestern humorists on the work of William Faulkner has long been hypothesized. But it has received scant critical attention, much of it erroneous or so general as to be almost meaningless. While Faulkner's total vision is more than merely humorous, humor is a significant part of that vision. And the importance of frontier humor to Faulkner's art is further substantiated by the fact that many of his grotesque passages derive from ele• ments of this humor. Frontier humor flourished from I83O to I860, and while a large group of men then flooded American newspapers with contributions, it now survives in anthologies and the book- length collections of its most prominent writers — Augustus Baldwin Longstreet, Joseph Glover Baldwin, Johnson Jones Hooper, William Tappan Thompson, Thomas Bangs Thorpe, and George Washington Harris.

  • Administration of Barack Obama, 2014 Remarks at the White House
Administration of Barack Obama, 2014 Remarks at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner May 3, 2014 The President. Thank you so much. Everybody, have a seat, have a seat. Before I get started, can we get the new Presidential setup out here? [At this point, aides placed two fern plants beside the podium.] It's worked before. [Laughter] That's more like it. It is great to be back. What a year, huh? I usually start these dinners with a few self- deprecating jokes. After my stellar 2013, what could I possibly talk about? [Laughter] I admit it, last year was rough. Sheesh. [Laughter] At one point, things got so bad, the 47 percent called Mitt Romney to apologize. [Laughter] Of course, we rolled out healthcare.gov. That could have gone better. [Laughter] In 2008, my slogan was, "Yes, we can." In 2013, my slogan was, "Control-Alt-Delete." [Laughter] On the plus side, they did turn the launch of healthcare.gov into one of the year's biggest movies. [Laughter] [An image of the title of the Walt Disney Co. film "Frozen" was shown.] But rather than dwell on the past, I would like to pivot to this dinner. Let's welcome our headliner this evening, Joel McHale. On "Community," Joel plays a preening, self-obsessed narcissist. So this diner must be a real change of pace for you. [Laughter] I want to thank the White House Correspondents' Association for hosting us here tonight. I am happy to be here, even though I am a little jetlagged from my trip to Malaysia.
