Greeting | WHEREAS WE have taken into Our Royalconsideration the need to mark the great constitutional change which hasresulted in the independence of the Federation of Nigeria. AND WHEREAS WE are desirous that Our Armed Forces in Nigeria and Our Police Force there should bear some form of recognition of this important event. Wedo by these Presents, for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, institute and create a new Medal for the Federation of Nigeria. - Firstly : The Medal shall be designated and styled “The Nigerian Independence Medal”. Secondly : The Medal shall be circular in'shape, one anda quarter inches in diameter, of cupronickel and shall bear on the obverse Our Royal Effigy Crowned and on the reverse the Nigerian-Coat of Arms surroundedby the inscription “Nigeria Independence, 1st October, 1960”. Thirdly : The persons eligible for the Medal shall be those of Ourfaithful subjects or others, male and female, who were serving in established posts on the strength of a unit in Our Royal Nigerian Military Forces and Our Royal Nigerian Navy orin established posts in Our Nigeria Police Force on 1st October, 1960, and those of Our faithful subjects, male and female, who as Officers or other ranks of Our United Kingdom Land Forces were on 1st October, 1960, serving in a seconded capacity with Our Royal Nigerian ’ Military Forces.

Fourthly ; The Medalshall be worn ontheleft breast suspended by a ribbon one and a quarter inches in width of three verticalstripes, green, white and green, of equal width, in the colours of the Nigerian national flag.

Fifthly : The Medal shall be worn after all Efficiency and Long Service Decorations and Medals and in front of the Service Medal of the Order of St. John. . Sixthly < It shall be competent for Our Governor-General for the time being to cancel and annul the award to any person of the above Medal, and thereupon the nameofsuch person in the Register shall be erased, but it shall be competent for Our Governor-Generalto restore any Medal which may have been so forfeited.
