Beyond these banal impediments, however, my fieldwork came up against yet another difficulty: that of challenging the master narrative “good quietist Sufi Islam” versus “bad radical Islamism”. It is precisely this widespread and essentialist narrative that my research calls into question. Ultimately, this recurrent “clash of representations” has eventually proven to be heuristic, by helping me identify a previously missed “Sufislamism”. Engaging the Politics of Studying Religious Groups in Nigeria: The Case of « Synagogue of All Nations » / Engager les politiques de étudier les groupes religieux au Nigeria: le cas de «Synagogue of All Nations » LAGUDA, Danoye Oguntola (Lagos State University, Nigeria) [email protected] The academic study of religion has become more challenging in recent times, especially in religiously plural societies where churches compete with one another for resources and for social influence. In this paper, I examine the situation in Lagos, Nigeria, where it is extremely difficult (if 7 not impossible) to study some Pentecostal Churches, due to suspicion of outsiders, fear of undue exposure, and the concern that tenets, doctrines, and sometimes liturgy may be considered “unchristian” by other groups. These issues have specifically made it difficult for Nigerian scholars to study Pastor T. B. Joshua’s Synagogue of all Nations Church—despite the fact that Pastor Joshua seems always willing to talk with scholars from Europe, America and Asia. Nigerian scholars are sometimes treated as spies of other competing Pentecostal churches, even to the point of being ejected by hired security personnel. To gather information and data on this group, a Nigerian scholar may have to appear to be a member or patron and participate in its programmes. I analyze this situation sociologically, gauging its consequences for the academic study of religion in Nigeria.

Carey, John Michael. 2019. Who Believes in Conspiracy Theories in Venezuela? Latin American Research Review 54(2), pp. 444–457. DOI: https://doi.org/10.25222/larr.88 POLITICS AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS Who Believes in Conspiracy Theories in Venezuela? John Michael Carey Dartmouth College, US [email protected] Conspiracy theories are central to political discourse in Venezuela and are widely supported. In the Americas Barometer Venezuela survey from 2016 to 2017, 54 percent of respondents expressed agreement for at least one of three political conspiracy narratives unsupported by evidence. Political loyalties to Chavismo or to the anti-Chavista opposition drive much conspiracy theory belief, but not all. Politically motivated reasoning pushes some citizens toward a given conspiracy narrative but others away. Other factors that are distinct from political loyalties, including low education levels, predispositions toward Manichaeanism and fatalism, and belief in the supernatural are associated with conspiracism. This article presents new data on conspiracy theory beliefs in Venezuela as well as analysis of its individual-level correlates, then discusses how the current Venezuelan political environment fosters conspiracy and what changes might mitigate this phenomenon.

Its southern border, which reaches into the Amazon River basin, is shared with Brazil. Geographically, Venezuela is a land of vivid contrasts, with four major divisions: the Maracaibo lowlands in the northwest, the northern mountains (the most northeastern section of the Andes) extending in a broad east-west arc from the Colombian border along the Caribbean Coast, the savannas of the Orinoco River Basin in central Venezuela, and the Guyana highlands in the southeast. The 1999 Constitution changed the name of the Republic of Venezuela to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The nation is composed of 20 federal states and a federal district, which contains the capital of Caracas. The country has an area of 352,144 square miles and about 85 percent of the national population lives in urban areas in the northern portion of the country, near the Caribbean Coast. Almost half of Venezuela's land area lies south of the Orinoco River, which contains only 5 percent of the total population. Caracas is the nation’s largest city with 3.2 million inhabitants (2008); however, Metropolitan District of Caracas has a popu- lation of about 5 million and includes the City of Caracas (Distrito Federal) and four municipalities in Miranda State: Chacao, Baruta, Sucre and El Hatillo.
