The subject of the mystery of Chris an death is one many people avoid un l faced with the imminent death of a loved one. On the subject of death Chris ans have as many ques ons as anyone else. To know that every life, from the very start, is des ned for death cannot help us from feeling less sure of ourselves, no ma er how familiar with death we may be. We may even find ourselves in rebellion when death appears up close. It may be accepted a er a long frui ul life, unless of course, we view our lives as being of unbearable pain. But death strikes blindly, at any age, even---absurdly—li le children, as well as men and women who seem to have great futures before them. We wrestle with agonizing ques- ons because death has touched each one of us. The scriptures teach that we are not to deny the mystery of death, but to have faith and hope because of one fact: Jesus Christ is risen. Those bap zed into Christ Jesus will be caught-up with the risen Lord a er their death. This is our faith and our hope, proclaimed at funerals and in annual celebra ons of All Souls and the Mexican “Day of the Dead.” Our prayers and cultural celebra ons do not remove our ques ons. They con nue to trouble us, rendering us unable to get things done during the mourning period following the death of a loved one. Torn be- tween conflic ng feelings we might be tempted to give up. At these mes we recall the agony Jesus and his cry from the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” But Jesus died with absolute trust: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Jesus’ trust is rooted in the experience of God’s uncondi onal love that never fails. This same faith and trust allow us not to be overcome by sadness like those who have no hope. The liturgy of the dead and our remembrance of the faithful departed allows us to “mix” our ques ons about the mystery of death with the praise of those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith and now see the Lord face to face. -Fr. Bill
- Padre Bill TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradi on holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was cre- ated and redeemed by God, was once the “dwelling place of the Holy Spirit,” and has a des ny of life with God in glory. The fu- neral prac ces of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The an- cient Chris an funeral liturgy ended with the rela ves and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affec on and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one’s “birthday to life,” the Chris ans would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hid- den in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Jus ce, Christ, at the end of days. They were a racted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would o en celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Chris ans were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beau ful difference. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
THANKS One act of thanksgiving when things go wrong with us is worth one thousand thank-yous when things are agreeable to our inclina on.—St.
