A Letter from our principal.. . Principal: Cathy Santelle

November 16, 2012

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The first trimester will be ending today, 16th. Teachers will be busy working on report cards to be sent home on Wednesday December 5 th . We hope that you will find the district report card very informative. It shows you how your child is progressing towards standards in each subject area, as well as providing you with behavioral information and comments.

In addition, the Specials areas (Art, Music and P.E.) will also be providing assessment information on the report card. Please utilize all of this information as a tool to indicate areas of success and areas that might need more attention as we continue to work together during the school year.

A reminder that Thanksgiving week is as follows: Monday 11/19 is a full day of school. Tuesday 11/20 is an early dismissal at 11:00a.m. (PM kindergarten students attend in the morning; no school for AM kindergarten students). Wednesday 11/21, Thursday 11/22 and Friday 11/23 there will be no school. We wish you a safe and happy holiday from all of us here at Woodview School!

Sincerely,

Cathy Santelle Principal Woodview School

We are singing and playing in music class!

Full Day Kindergarten is exploring their voices. We are learning the proper way to use our voice, and sing correct pitches. To get students singing, we are playing games, and instruments to accompany songs. Towards the end of the unit, students are expected to sing by themselves for the class! These will be simple songs, and fun for the students, so please don’t be nervous!

First grade is starting to sing with “solfege” (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do). This helps them develop a musical ear. Right now we are working on “Sol and Mi.” It’s surprising how many children’s songs are developed around these two notes!

Second Grade is starting to sing, and play in “ostinatos,” which are basically two different things happening at once. They are also continuing their work with “solfege” syllables (de, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do). These skills will help them sing in a choir, as they get older!

Third grade is starting recorder! I am teaching them the proper way to play, as well as how to fix any issues they are having while practicing. The number one issue is the holes on the recorder are not covered properly. The number two issue is blowing too hard.

Fourth Grade is playing recorder for the second year! We are reviewing songs from last year, and learning a few new songs. This year, I will also start splitting students into parts while we play recorder, to get students used to the idea of playing in a band or orchestra. Please read the third grade message above if your students are still struggling with recorder!

Mark your calendars:

The 3 rd and 4 th grade concert this year is Thursday February 28 at 6:30 pm

The 1 st and 2 nd grade concert this year is Thursday March 14 at 6:30 pm

Please e-mail if you have any questions!

Sincerely, Tyler Smith [email protected] Art News

I am always looking for more parent volunteers to help out in the art room at various times throughout the year. If you are interested in helping please contact me at [email protected] .

There are different supplies that the art room is always looking for: Baby wipes, yarn, fake flowers, buttons, beads, pipe cleaners, pencils, glitter, fun erasers for prizes, masking tape, large zip lock bags, washable markers.

Kindergarten The students are learning one element of art, LINE. There are many different types of lines: wavy, zigzag, spirals, curly, straight, thin, thick, and dotted lines. The students will be drawing a big bedtime quilt where each quilted patch has a different type of line design in them. Then they will draw themselves sleeping under the quilt of lines.

First Grade The students will be traveling in Art class to Ancient Greece, which is located in Europe. There they will take a look at the culture of ancient Greece and artwork. In Greece they would make many different types of vases: dinosa, amphora, oinochoe, krater, stamnos, hydria, kantharos. These vases have a lot of decorative designs and greek patterns. The students will choose which vase they would like to cut out. The First Graders made their own scratch board by coloring in paper with crayon and painting over it with a mixture of soap and black paint. They will use their scratch board to cut a greek vase and design it with many different patterns.

Second Grade The students are traveling in art to the country of . They are learning all about the cultural celebration of “The Day of the Dead” or “Dia De Los Muertos.” The students will listen to a story all about that day and learn about some of the food that is made, some Spanish words, and the cultural activities that are done on the Day of the Dead. The students learn that the Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrating the life of past loved ones, honoring the spirits. The art project students will be creating are their own sugar skull where they will decorate it with flowery shapes and designs. The Second Graders will be using a new art media, chalk pastels, to decorate their artwork.

Third Grade The students will be traveling in Art class to the country of Ghana, which is located in Africa. There they will learn about the culture of Ghana and the artwork that is made there. The clothes that people from Ghana are works of art. They make the clothes with designs, symbols, and patterns. The Third Graders will have to create their own pattern using the symbols that people from Ghana use. These symbols are called adinkra symbols, and each one has a special meaning. After the students come up with their design, they will use wax to draw their design on a piece of cloth. This process is called . The last step to the batik is to use color dye. The students will choose three colors to create their African batik.

Fourth Grade The students are working with clay and constructing their own Big Mouths. A Big Mouth can be an animal, person, creature, alien, or made up character that looks like their mouth is open really wide. This is a fun lesson where the students have to use their imagination as well as critical thinking as to how to construct a three-dimensional art project. They will be learning new vocabulary words that go along with ceramics, for example: wedge, scoring and slipping, kiln, leather hard, bone dry, bisque fire, and glaze fire. Physical Education Update

Third and 4th graders have finished up their floor hockey unit. It was a huge success and the students really worked hard on their hand eye coordination skills. They have also been fitness testing and I have seen a lot of improvements on the 1/2 mile run, push-ups, sit-ups and chin-ups. They are working really hard and I am proud of them.

Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade have been really focusing on their catching, throwing and kicking skills. They have been practicing with a partner and by themselves. They are learning to use two hands when they catch the ball and to always keep their eyes on the ball. They are also learning to point step and throw different size balls. All the students are really doing an excellent job on kicking. They are getting better at putting their planting foot next to the ball and not always kicking with their toes.

When the students come back from Thanksgiving break, they will all be learning about the heart. The gym will be an obstacle course based on a heart. They will learn where the blood travels, the different valves in a heart and what the heart does. All classes will be participating during the Heart Adventure Class. GOLDEN TICKET WINNERS
