However, none of the four “West Hollywood Originals” were awarded any of the eight recre- ational permits during the city’s selection process last December. TUPs could no longer be issued without the 2021 extension, though some worried the date is too lenient. Opponent Erron Silverstein, whose dispensary, Aeon West Hollywood, Inc., was one of the eight chosen by the selection com- mittee for a recreational permit, asked for the extension date to be moved closer to the openings of the winners’ dispensaries in early- to mid-2020. Community and Legislative Affairs Manager John Leonard noted later that although past extensions have allowed TUPs to be issued for the duration of the year, they have never been for more than three- or six-month peri- ods. Sarah Armstrong, a proponent of the amendment, urged the council not to prematurely close the “Originals’” window of opportunity during public com- ment. “Shuttering existing businesses before determining what the cannabis footprint will look like may rob patients and consumers of safe access,” Armstrong said. The eight businesses that won recreational permits have until Feb. 7 to apply for business licens- es, and half have already been approved. Unless one of the win- ners is denied their license or fails to meet the deadline, it is unlikely any of the “Originals” will be given permits to sell recreational cannabis. Suggestions have been made about raising the number of recreational permits. The coun- cil previously declined to do so and won’t be able to consider issuing any other dispensaries adult-use permits until after the new year. With the 2021 extension, the “Originals” will need to apply for and secure new medical-use busi- ness licenses from the city that are compliant with the ordinance. All four are still operating under licenses obtained prior to the ordi- nance. 4 October 24, 2019 Park Labrea News/Beverly Press Man gets lengthy sentence Victim identified in hit-and-run on Highland Avenue for rapes and robberies By edwin folven A 29-year-old man was struck and n Defendant posed as killed by a driver in a hit-and-run that occurred on Oct. 18 at approxi- driver for ride-hailing mately 3 a.m. at the intersection of services and picked Highland and Willoughby avenues.
