About This Guide
This guide was designed to make the London visitor aware of the multitude of museums we have in this great city both big and small. Many museums are world famous whilst there are also many that most would never have heard of before. I hope this guide helps to bring them to your attention so that you may enjoy as many of London's museums as possible.

Just slightly North West of The City area of London lies the area known as Bloomsbury. A name which stretches back to the 13th century when the rural area was owned by William Blemond.

The story of anaesthesia and the history of pain control. There are many objects relating to the subject of anaesthesia on display including a resuscitation set from 1774.
Other Great Things To Do and See In Bloomsbury
Royal Academy of Dramatic Art - Malet Street, Somers Town, WC1E 6ED www.rada.ac.uk/
Known as RADA for short and is one of the most famous drama schools in the world. Only 28 new students are taken on each year to this prestigious school.
There are three small theatres within the buildings; they are The Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre, The George Bernard Shaw Theatre and The John Gielgud Theatre. There is also a licensed bar in the foyer.

Showing "We Will Rock You" for the past 9 years. A spectacular show telling the story of a rebel youth whose mission it is to resurrect real music with real instruments and passion. With the music of "Queen" this show really does rock your socks off.

Bowling alleys can be rather soulless places but the Bloomsbury Lanes has a unique and charming feel. There are eight smart bowling lanes, with the only vintage above lane ball return outside of the USA.
There is a bar and American diner to complete your evening's entertainment set within a cosy soft furnished and wood bar area. Booking in advance is essential 0207-1831979.
Bloomsbury Theatre (15 Gordon Street) http://www.thebloomsbury.com
The theatre is owned and is part of the University College London (UCL) and hosts a varied programme of shows from comedy stand up and sketch shows to drama, dance and music.
A warm and comfortable small theatre with full view of the stage for all.
The British Telecom Tower. 60 Cleveland Street Marylebone.
An Iconic 1960's tower which has dominated the London skyline for many years. Although currently not open to the public, this very distinctive tower is well worth checking out while you're in the area.
Oddly, although it cannot be missed, the tower was actually classified as an official secret until the 1990's.
Russell Square
Russell Square is a large garden square in the middle of Bloomsbury. It is an elegant oasis away from the noise of the city where you can sit and read for awhile. There is a small café in the square for light refreshments and recently installed fountains which come out directly from the pavement area, making it a good option to cool down on hot summer days.
Keep a look out for an original cab mans shelter hut which was first established in 1875 as a place for drivers to take a quick break from their work. Only a few remain around the city now.

Oxford Street
A few streets away from the British Museum is one of London's famous shopping areas. Oxford street is a mixture of tourist shops, clothes shops and large department stores such as Selfridges, John Lewis and the music and DVD mega store Zavvi.

Visit the home of one of the great baroque composers, George Frideric Handel. He lived in the house between 1723 until his death in 1759. Whilst living here he composed some of his most famous work, Messiah, Zadok the Priest and Music for the Royal Fireworks.

The Faraday Museum is an amazing place where you can discover historic artefacts from over 200 years of world class scientific research, experiment and invention. It is also where the famous scientist, Michael Faraday worked nearly two hundred years ago and part of his actual laboratory can still be seen.

This house is also known as 'Number One London', and is probably the most extravagant and flamboyant house you will ever see.
It was the home of the Duke of Wellington after his victory at Waterloo and the interior has remained very much as it was during his stay.

This is one of my favourite places to visit when I'm in this part of the city. They hold regular new art exhibitions throughout the year as well as their permanent displays. Most notably is the Summer Exhibition where thousands of artists submit their work to be displayed and get noticed.

Grosvenor Square Gardens
The American Embassy is situated next to the gardens and they have had a presence in this part of the city since 1785.
At the eastern end of the garden there is a small memorial in the form of a elliptical granite block engraved with the names of the British victims of the September 11 attacks.
Berkeley Square
This quiet garden is a wonderfully relaxing space away from the hustle of the busy London Streets. London Plane trees surround the square and are some of the oldest in central London, planted in 1789.
A lovely old Tea Shop which was first founded in 1757, can be found in the square. As well as a statue by Alexander Munro, a Pre-Raphaelite sculptor, made in 1858
The square is famous for several things such as having the most haunted house in London and for being the home for the fictional character of Bertie Wooster.
Burlington Arcade (behind Bond Street)
This is a beautiful covered shopping arcade which was built in 1819. It is very exclusive and the shops reflect this, with items for sale such as Top Hats and unique jewellery.
New Bond Street .
In the heart of Mayfair can be found New Bond Street, a very fashionable shopping area since the 18th century.
You won't find many of your usual high street shops here. However if you are looking for something very exclusive and expensive such as jewellery, fashion and art you will find it here.

Wellington Arch was designed in 1825 by George IV to remember Britain’s victories in the Napoleonic Wars and was originally planned to be the gateway to Buckingham Palace.
There is an exhibition gallery inside and from viewing platforms visitors can perch high above the traffic below and see exceptional views of the surrounding parks and the London skyline.

This charming museum tells the story of the Foundling Hospital which was a charitable establishment set up in the early 18th Century to care for abandoned babies.

This is the last remaining house which the world famous writer, Charles Dickens lived in. It is a beautiful 18th century house in a typically Georgian terrace in London. Many of the original features of the house remain.
You really do get a sense of the man as you walk through the very same rooms he would have known so well. A must visit for any fans of Dickens and his work.
A lovely tea room overlooking the gardens is situated at the rear of the house.

Historical and medical equipment from the hospitals history. The hospital is also famous for its connections with the writer of the world famous children's book "Peter Pan". There are some items on display relating to the story of Peter Pan and it's creator J. M. Barrie.

Coram's Fields is a seven acre playground and park for children. The area is free to use and open to children and young people under 16. No adult can enter without a child.
Coram's Fields includes a Youth Centre, Children's Centre, Community Nursery, Sports Programme, a city farm and a cafe which is open from March until October.
The park is open all year round from 9am until dusk.

A truly unusual house absolutely crammed full with architectural and artistic treasures which were collected by the great architect John Soane.
Trust me when I say you will never come across anther museum like this one. It is truly fascinating and will be a great talking point amongst your friends.

A great 18th century house where Dr Samuel Johnson wrote his famous Dictionary. Stretched over 4 creaking floors you will be able to read about all the colourful characters that also lived and visited the house during Johnson's lifetime.

The Strand
This is the central church of the Royal Air Force and was completed in 1682 by Sir Christopher Wren. Just like its name it's bells play the nursery rhyme "Oranges and Lemons, Rang the Bells of St Clements" although there is nothing to actually link the two together.
The church is Open daily between 9am and 4pm unless there are special services taking place. A beautiful church which celebrates the RAF and indeed 1,000 squadron and unit badges can be seen inscribed on the wonderful slate floor leading up to the altar.

This is a large area of fantastic buildings which is the home of a thriving society of lawyers. The history of these Inn's goes back to at least 1422 and since then the area has always remained the domain of the legal profession. The buildings are surrounded by tranquil gardens which are open to the public free of charge Monday to Friday 7 am to 7 pm.

The Inn's buildings, however, are only open for organised tours, except for the Chapel which is open Monday to Friday 12 noon to 2.30 pm.

The Church was built by the Knights Templar, the order of crusading monks founded to protect pilgrims on their way to and from Jerusalem in the 12th century. The Temple Church is one of the most historic and beautiful churches in London.

The Old Curiosity Shop - 13 Portsmouth Street, Holborn, London WC2A 2ES

16th century shop and literary landmark. It is considered to be the oldest shop in central London. The building is made from wood from old ships and has survived both the Great Fire of 1666 and the bombs of Second World War. Today It is a upmarket men’s and women’s shoe shop.

Everything you could possibly want to know about transport networks and the history of London transport. From the first trolley buses to the latest modern trains, this museum has it all. One of my personal favourites in London, this museum is great fun for both kids and adults alike. You really do get a sense of London past and present.

Freemasons’ Hall has been the centre of English freemasonry for 230 years. It is the headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England, the oldest Grand Lodge in the world.

The collection comprises of over sixteen thousand objects and archival items relating to the history of ophthalmic optics, the human eye and visual aids.

Other Great Things To Do and See In West End
Leicester Square (near Charing Cross Rd)
This is a pedestrianised square with a small park in the centre with a 9th century statue of William Shakespeare surrounded by dolphins. Leicester Square is the centre of London's cinema land and is surrounded by floor mounted plaques with film stars names and cast handprints. This is a hub of entertainment, lots of places to eat, a cinema, a small park, theatres and nightclubs.
Soho
This is a London West End area between Oxford Street and Shaftesbury Avenue. The area was originally known for its adult shops but has since been cleaned up and is now a fashionable district of quality restaurants and media offices, although there is still a small selection of adult venues.
Piccadilly Circus
This is a junction That links directly to Shaftesbury Avenue, the Haymarket, Coventry Street and Glasshouse Street.
The area is a tourist attraction known for its large video displays and neon signs mounted on a corner building. There is also a famous memorial fountain and statue known as Eros but which is actually Anteros.
Covent Garden
The area was originally known for it's fruit and veg market but which has now been transformed into a fantastic area of quality gift shops and outside cafe areas.

The Swiss Re Building is informally known to Londoners as the Gherkin due to its unusual shape. It was built on the site of the world famous Baltic Exchange (global marketplace for shipping sales and information) which was destroyed by a IRA bomb in 1992.
Although not open to the public it is well worth a visit for its architectural beauty and is a landmark in the London City map area.
