Central Europe
Central Europe West Germany FOREIGN POLICY AND STATUS OF BERLIN OUBJECTS discussed during British Premier Harold Wilson's offi- cial visit to Bonn from March 7 to 9 included the maintenance of the British Rhine Army in Germany, the continuation of German currency aid for the United Kingdom, and a new approach to German reunification. When East German authorities tried to interfere with the meeting of the Bundestag in Berlin on April 7 by disrupting traffic to and from the former capital, the Western Allies protested sharply. In his opening speech Eugen Gerstenmaier, president of the Bundestag, emphasized the right of the Fed- eral parliament to meet in West Berlin and denied that the session was an act of provocation. During the Easter holidays 300,000 West Berliners were permitted to visit relatives in the Eastern zone of the divided city. About a million Berliners crossed the Berlin Wall and spent Christmas with their relatives, after the renewal of an agreement in November. Queen Elizabeth II of England and her consort the Duke of Edinburgh made an official visit to West Germany and West Berlin in May, and were cheered by the population. Attempts by Foreign Minister Gerhard Schroder to bring about an improvement in relations with the United Kingdom during this visit were viewed skeptically by Franz-Josef Strauss, chairman of the Christian Social Union (CSU), representing the pro-French wing of the coalition. French President Charles de Gaulle's talks with Chancellor Ludwig Erhard in Bonn in June were described as "positive," but did not lead to an agree- ment on a conference to discuss the reorganization of the Common Market and other matters pertaining to the European community. -

National Democratic Party of Germany
National Democratic Party of Germany Name: National Democratic Party of Germany Type of Organization: Political party Ideologies and Affiliations: Neo-fascist neo-Nazi ultranationalist Place of Origin: Hanover, Germany Year of Origin: 1964 Founder(s): Heinrich Fassbender, Friedrich Thielen, Adolf von Thadden, Wilhelm Gutmann Places of Operation: Germany Overview Executive Summary: Germany’s National Democratic Party (Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands or NPD) is a far-right political party that advocates racist, anti- Semitic, and anti-Muslim views. According to the German intelligence service, the NPD rejects the concept of liberal democracy.1 The NPD is hostile towards both the United States and Israel. The party is opposed to multiculturalism and is concerned about the “foreign infiltration” ( Überfremdung) of Germany, namely the perceived Americanization and Islamization of German society.2 The NPD considers the presence of immigrants in Germany—regardless of whether they hold German citizenship—to be an attack on the German ethnic community ( Volksgemeinschaft) and advocates deporting immigrants to their respective countries of origin.3 The NPD was founded in 1964. Despite some initial popularity among voters during the 1960s, the party was not able to sustain its success and became a marginalized political force for the subsequent three decades, during which time the group experienced financial difficulties and a steep decline in membership. Following German reunification in 1990, the NPD grew its support base in many of the regions of former East Germany, entering several state parliaments in the late-1990s. During this time, the NPD strategically repositioned itself by opening the party up to neo-Nazis and becoming more overtly radicalized.4 According to 2017 statistics from Germany’s domestic intelligence service (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz or BfV), the NPD has a membership of 4,500 people.5 According to the German intelligence service, the NPD opposes liberal democracy and appears to support an authoritarian state. -

The National Democratic Party of Germany: an Wing
THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF GERMANY: AN ANALYSIS OF A RADICAL RIGHT WING POLITICAL PARTY A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Department of Political Science University of Houston In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts by Lee O. Andresen April, 1971 584028 THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF GERMANY: AN ANALYSIS OF A RADICAL RIGHT WING POLITICAL PARTY An Abstract of A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Department of Political Science University of Houston In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts by Lee O. Andresen April, 1971 ABSTRACT Is Nazism destined to become a potent political force in West Ger many? Many observers feel the longevity of a flamboyant party of the Radical Right, the National Democratic Party of Germany, is sufficient reason to answer this question in the affirmative. They conclude the par ty, which has had moderate successes in state and local elections, is neo-Nazi in orientation with the objective of resurrecting the political structure and style of the Third Reich. Just how sound is their hypoth esis? Is the neo-Nazi appellation accurate or is the NPD really a con servative democratic party content to work within the boundaries of Bonn's parliamentary democracy. The conclusion of this study is that the National Democrats can not be described in terms of any such "categorical absolute" as National Socialism. The NPD's anti-democratic proclivities are plain but to as sert an identity with National Socialism because of similarities in the composition of voter reservoirs, patterns of membership recruitment, and ideology is an exaggeration. -

Western Europe
Western Europe Great Britain T. HE MAJOR political event of the year was the general election. Held in October1H , it brought the Labor party to power with a majority of four. As Labor could depend on the six Liberal votes on most issues, they had an adequate working majority, but not one that suggested five years of office. The new House of Commons contained 33 Jews (31 Labor, 2 Conservative). The Queen's speech at the opening of Parliament in November included a promise of action against race discrimination. Anti-colored sentiments had been played down during the election, except at Smethwick, in the Midlands, where supporters of the Conservative candidate exploited racial antagonisms. It was the only constituency where there was a major swing of votes to the Conservatives. The financial position of the United Kingdom had deteriorated during the election period, and the new government found itself faced by grave balance- of-payments problems, which it attempted to solve by imposing a 15-per-cent surcharge on imports. This greatly annoyed continental exporters, but failed to prevent a run on sterling. The government was forced to raise the bank rate to 7 per cent, and it secured credits of $3 billion from foreign central banks for use in defending the pound. Repayments of $62 million on United States and Canadian loans had to be deferred. It appeared that the "stop-go" ap- proach to the economy was again to prevail. After Prime Minister Harold Wilson visited President Lyndon B. Johnson in December, he declared that the "charade" of independent nuclear power had come to an end. -
