By Simone Goodluck FAMUAN Staff Writer

Going to school and paying living expenses pose a serious problem for many Florida A&M University students. However, these worries seem trivial when the student has to add parenthood and ajob to the list. "It would have been much easier if I did not have to balance school, motherhood and a part-time job," said rT\r Vandura Henderson, 21, the mother of a three-year-old daughter Victoria. Her friends often babysit for her at night while she works part time at Consultec. After the birth of her son, Camilla Barnes, 26, a senior journalism major, found it very difficult to give school as much attention as she was giving to her son. As a result, her grades dropped : considerably. "I thought it was more important to influence him in life than to put him in - 4 day care," she said. A junior elementary education 1$ B experienced the same problem. Valerie Walker, 27, started at FAMU in 1983, stopped in 1986 and returned in 1989 as a part-time student after the birth of her N~ / daughter Ashley. "After I had her, I went back to school," she reflected. "It was difficult to go back after about three years absence from school." By Heath A. Smith FAMUAN Sports Editor

The 1993 Florida A&M University Spring Carnival came to an abrupt and wintry conclusion Saturday. Freezing temperatures combined with 30-35 mile per hour winds forced FAMU Track Coach Bobby Lang and other coaches to cancel their games. For Lang it was especially hard to cancel because of all the time, effort and money put into the event. "This is the first time I know of that we ever had to cancel a track meet because of weather conditions," Lang said. "Schools came down here all week and were not able to perform," Lang said. FAMU Baseball Coach Joe Durant was luckier than most coaches participating in the Spring Sports Carnival because he was to play all his games before Saturday, but had remorse for those not so lucky. "Other teams came so far to be disappointed," Durant said. The cancelation of the Spring Sports Carnival was not only a disappointment for sports fans, but for FAMU's Athletic Department purse as well.
