President A Non-Profit Corporation for Traditional Arts Denise Sciandra [email protected] Notes from Board President, Denise Sciandra

Vice President I’m a new fan of Cayucos. For those not familiar with it, this small Paul Starcevich [email protected] (population about 2600) community is located right on the ocean between Cambria and Morro Secretary Sue Wirt Bay. I went there for the first time in April with [email protected] the String Band for its second annual jam.

Treasurer Jim Ross Participants this time were Karen Starcevich, Betty and Greg [email protected] Merrill, Andrea and John McDaniel, Denise and Salvatore

Concert Master Sciandra, Susan Tellier, Kelly O’Neill, Marc “Ez” Poschman, Pat Wolk and Vickie Nodacker. Non [email protected] instrument-playing spouses, Paul Membership Starcevich and Anastasia O’Neill, Patty Bennett Andrea McDaniel [email protected] also joined the fun.

Lifetime Member We stayed at the Cayucos Motel which is owned by Alan Hubbart the sister of String Band member, Vickie Nodacker. Members At Large The motel is just a few steps from the ocean. It is Ron Bohigian [email protected] reasonably priced and offers a substantial “continental

Bill Lehr breakfast” that’s included. It’s small with only eight [email protected] rooms. Since

Karen Starcevich the string band [email protected] reserved the Sal, Denise, Kelly, Anastasia Ann Lamb entire place, it allowed us to play music [email protected] whenever we wished.

Bill Johnson [email protected] The weather was windy and cold so the Flyer Editor jamming took place indoors this year. Bill Johnson Karen quietly made sure that the [email protected] afternoon jam was inclusive of those of us Calendar Editor who rely on sheet music. That afternoon, Maria Glover Betty and Greg Merrill HM 559-322-8677 Vickie recorded us at the request of her Cell 559-281-8278 sister playing “Sail Away, Ladies.” That video and additional photos can be viewed [email protected] on the Cayucos Motel’s Facebook page. In addition to playing music, other popular activities were window shopping, walking on the pier, and eating out. Brown Butter Cookie Company, and A Deli & Pieman Pies, and Top Dog Coffee Bar were popular and already known to the group. Thank you to my friend, Leigh Deguili, for recommending Cafe Della Via and its delicious Italian food. Our parting activity was breakfast outside on the motel picnic tables chatting and gazing at the ocean at which time, Karen said, “This is my idea of a perfect vacation.” Me, too. I’m looking forward to next year.

Longtime FFS Board member, Steve Ono, has resigned from the Board. However, he will still be volunteering behind the scenes doing such things as creating flyers to promote events, creating tickets, and setting up sound. He will continue to play and teach . Thank you, Steve, for your past (and future) service. Steve Ono In a special election, Pat Wolk has been elected to take his place. We welcome her back to the FFS board after a few years absence. Pat first became a board member as President in 1991 on her retirement from Fresno State when Kevin Hall phoned her and said: “The FFS board just had a meeting and elected you president.” “But-but-but,” she protested, and then said: “What the hell. Okay.” And thus began a 20-plus year commitment to the FFS board. That first year she and Bill Rickard organized a monthly John McCutcheon and Pat Wolk concert series with John McCutcheon the first January, the week of Pat’s birthday. John has returned every year in January since 1992, each year expanding his fan base. Pat does not play an instrument but considers herself a “groupie” who loves the music and respects the musicians. She has created a beautiful garden environment for them in which to perform.

LOVELY PINWHEEL QUILT TO BE RAFFLED

Let me tell you about Helen Woodall, Lyni Woodall's mother. Helen Woodall was a teacher in Mariposa and Madera for many years. She and her husband raised four children, one of whom is Lyni Woodall. Helen spent her “spare” time doing lots of various crafts, candle making, soap making, leather working (with her husband), candle-wicking (a form of needle work), crocheting, knitting, ceramics, cross stitch, and QUILTING. After she retired, she dove into quilting big time. She was a charter member of the Heart of California Quilt Guild and was their first featured quilter at the Madera County Fair in 1996. One year (1992-93) she made sixteen quilts so that her children and grandchildren could each choose a quilt of his/her very own. She made sixteen so that the eleven recipients would have a wide range of choices and not feel that there was no choice if you were the one at the end. She taught quilting to her daughters who used to meet for a weekend each year at Tahoe and do quilts together. Helen, like all quilters, had tons of material from which to choose, and all of it “demanded” to be made into something. Lyni has graciously and generously donated one of Helen's quilts to the Fresno Folklore Society to be raffled as a fundraiser. It is a beautiful pinwheel design and sized for a king size bed. If you see Sue Wirt at any events in April, she should have raffle tickets with her. They are $5.00 for six tickets, $10.00 for twelve, and so on. The raffle will be held at the Laurie Lewis concert on May 7th at the Wolk Folk Garden. You need not be present to win but it would be nice to see all of you there, anyway. Helen's legacy continues to go out into the world and bring joy to others. (Sue Wirt) Community Dance Changes The tradition of twice monthly Contra Dances which have been held for many years, most recently at the California Dance Academy, have been discontinued due to low attendance. Organizers will take another look at possibly restarting them next year. Send any ideas you have that may bring renewed contra dance success to Evo Bluestein at [email protected]. Until then, keep those hooves a shakin’. In the meantime, the 1st Saturday English Country Dance continues in Auberry and the 4th Saturday Irish dance continues at Cal Arts Academy. There will also be a quarterly North Fork Dance starting June 16. Details at evobluestein.com. or email Evo.

Celebrating the Bow-–Fresno’s First World Day Folklore Society member Larry Cusick is bringing World Fiddle Day to Fresno. He has recruited some of Fresno’s finest fiddlers to perform in a free concert on Saturday, May 27, 1 - 5 pm. The venue is the Academy of Music and Arts (formerly the Voice Shop) at 1296 N. Wishon Ave., in Fresno’s Tower District. A committee of Fresno Folklore Society members, including Linda Guerrero, Karana Drayton and Megan Bohigian, is assisting in the planning and logistics for the event, which is sponsored by the Fresno Folklore Society and American Music Company. The concert program will be varied, featuring American Old Time, Scandinavian, Celtic, World and Quebecois music played by an impressive roster of expert fiddlers, including Terry Barrett, Donn Beedle, Evo Bluestein and his students, Larry Cusick, Jared Dean, Katzi Engle, Linda Guerrero, Kathryn Johnson, Carl Parnell, EZ Marc Poschman, Mark Ryan, Barry Shultz, and George White. Admission to Fresno’s First World Fiddle Day is free, but donations are gladly accepted.

What a beautiful Easter Weekend at Finegold: flowers blooming, water flowing, pleasant daytime weather …but it was chilly at night. Cooked my brunch (potatoes and carrots) in the solar cooker. Saturday afternoon music near the grotto featured Billy DeWitt’s band. Up on the Gatehaus porch there were Frank Moshella, Bruce King, Jeff Grule and Bill Lehr in a virtually acoustic mode accompanying Studio Creek and Barn the lovely voice of Sue Ellen McCutcheon. Then we all enjoyed the tri-tip barbeque. Sunday morning at Council Rock a pair of Easter Bunnies appeared to lead children out to the grain field for the traditional Easter Egg hunt Susie Hickman at 90 followed by a picnic with friends, neighbors and acquaintances. Finegold creek flowed too much to get into the grottos. However, they should be very accessible for our Memorial Weekend Tie-Dye workshop/campout. Will we see you this year at a few workshops: tie-dyeing? Flint napping? Gold panning? Grotto exploring? Camping? Solar cooking? Hiking? Music jams? Pottery? We could use some assistance with weed whacking to comply with fire code. Finegold care-taker Sue Davis has provided a 5 minute video of last year's Easter weekend . BLUEGRASS IN THE PARK STARTS AGAIN FOR 2017 It is May again which means Bluegrass in the Park in Clovis' Liberty Park starts up to give us a summer of Fridays that feature terrific music in the outdoors. Liberty Park, 901 Fifth Street, is just east of the Clovis Veterans Memorial Building. Bring your chairs and dinner or snacks, walk over to the Clovis Farmers' Market a couple of blocks away to pick up your fresh produce, dance on the cement areas while the various bands play, and visit with friends and family. The mostly weekly offerings will go from 6:30 pm to dusk. There is a Friday that is “dark”, August 18, the Friday that the law school has it's annual picnic. Check Bluegrass in the Park out on Facebook, put the calendar up on the wall, whatever you need to do to be sure to remember the dates. There is a great line-up this summer and all of us who attend commend the California Bluegrass Association for starting this wonderful summer activity. (Sue Wirt)

Two for the Road (Donn Beedle/fiddle and Karana Hattersley-Drayton/vocals/keyboard) favor the swingier end of their repertoire in a concert May 4th, 6-8 pm, $5 at the door, 175 Fulton Street. This is the amazing back room ("Three Deuces Lounge") of Baskin Mechanical Engineers located in the 1924 J.M. Menend candy store. This room has been fitted out as a museum with old cars and memorabilia from the 20’s. Go south under State Route 41 to the South Van Ness Industrial District, two blocks north or so of the Fresno sign (on Fulton at Cherry). Join us for historic music in a historic building. Debi Ruud was inspired by a performance in Sonoma by a local rock and roll choir a few years ago, thought about it for awhile and decided to start one here in Fresno. She started out with just a few people and it has grown to about 40 members in total. Her first members were some of her own students and friends and gained members through Facebook, word of mouth, and audience members at some of their performances. The choir is named “Hearts on Fire” for the hearts of the people who want to sing together. My first exposure was a flash mob at KJWL while I was helping with Art Hop at Frank's Place. I knew it was going to happen, so I went across the street to the radio station to experience it myself and was duly impressed. There is a video on their Facebook page so you can see and hear it for yourself. Their first concert was a fundraiser for The Fresno Center for Non-Violence. It is a non-auditioned volunteer choir (though you do need to be able to carry a tune), you are not required to read music and the rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:15 pm at the Fresno Music Academy & Arts Vista Theater, 1298 N Wishon just north of the Bank of America in the Tower District. The important part of being a member is to bring your desire to make music with a like-minded group of people. Debi says it is like a family. Her friend in Sonoma, Mark Dennis, shares the arrangements that he does for Vox Populi (the inspiring rock and roll choir from the first sentence). What they are also looking for are musicians who want to play for them as a band and, right now, that has to be volunteer also. They are looking for more gigs as well. Currently on the schedule is Friday, May 5, a fundraiser for the Big Red Church (First Congregational at 2131 N Van Ness Blvd). The show starts at 7:00 pm, tickets are $10.00 each and children 12 and under are free. There will be a raffle put on by the church and a prize is a 55” TV. I would need a larger living room for that. They also will be doing their annual show at KJWL on Friday, November 17th, the week before Thanksgiving. Come on over to the church on May 5th and have a listen, maybe join the choir the following Wednesday. (Sue Wirt) 6

Dues are Due July 1st! We appreciate your support. FFS membership period runs from July 1 to June 30 each year. Individual memberships are $20; families are $30 and additional contributions are always put to good use. Payments received after January 1st apply to the July to June year-ahead membership. To keep mailing costs down, we don’t mail out letters when dues are due. (We are so fiscally prudent.) So…if you haven’t done your dues, please do your dues so we won’t be just sad old-timey songs like: I Don’t Love Nobody, Nobody Loves Me; Buddy, Can You Spare Me a Dime, I Had a Dollar, But Now It’s Gone; I Wouldn’t Be Playin’ the Fiddle and Poorman’s Road to Banjo Hell. LAURIE LEWIS AT WOLK FOLK GARDEN

Laurie Lewis is a singer, , fiddle and guitar player who will be appearing with her band, The Right Hands (sans banjo player) on Sunday, May 7, in the Wolk Folk Garden at 6:30 pm. There will be a potluck at 5:00 pm so bring something good to share and we can all have a rollicking good time. Laurie and her band will be traveling back from a gig in Southern California, and are stopping to give us a concert. I am very happy about this as I love her music (my favorite album is “Blossoms”). Laurie became involved in because of the Berkeley Folk Festivals and started with guitar and then the fiddle. In her early 20's she found Bluegrass and began carving out her own niche. In California, the theme for most of us is making music together which she embraces, although she has won her share of recognition for Laurie Lewis and The Right Hands her individual efforts. She has appeared on the and on Prairie Home Companion. Her songs have been recorded by other artists and she is widely known as a producer and teacher, not just of instruments but also for songwriting and vocals/harmony. Her most recent cd has been nominated for a Grammy. “The Hazel and Alice Sessions” grew from the love of music done by Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard, some written by them and some traditional songs that they performed. Laurie has said that there are enough to mine for a second cd in the future. If you want to help set up and take down for the potluck and concert, please call Pat Wolk at 304-4695. The tickets are available at National Hardware, Patrick's Music, Pat Wolk and Sue Wirt and cost $20.00 in advance or for FFS and CBA members. They will be $25.00 at the door for non-members. The usual jam table with the fabulous Lynn's Jams will be there and that is the night we are drawing the ticket for the wonderful HelenWoodall Quilt which was featured in the April newsletter. Tickets are available for the quilt from Sue Wirt, $5.00 for 6, $10.00 for 12 and so on. (Sue Wirt)

PLAYED FROM THE HEART THEME FOR CAG—MAY 16-21

This year's theme for the California Autoharp Gathering is “Played from the Heart.” The schedule is out on line now so go take a look (calautoharp.com). Classes in Early Bird Academy include headings such as “Melodic Sparkling Techniques” and “Fantastic Fun.” Sounds good to me. Along with the “learning to play” and “improve your play” classes throughout the week, there will be a large selection of song styles to choose such as “Cowboy Songs of the Golden Age,” Classical Themes,” “Singalongs,” “ and African-American Folk Songs,” “Songs to Learn from the Roaring 20's,” “Hits of the 1860's,” and “Carter Family Songs.” Rob Scholnick will be there to teach beginning ukulele, Bryan Bowers has a class on how to write song lyrics; there are classes on instrument harmony, how to accompany other instruments, a guitar class on how to accompany autoharps, the “Health and Mental Benefits of Shared Music,” and, a first (ta-da) “ Beginning Clogging/ Flatfooting.” One that would be of interest to those starting out is “How to Play the Autoharp in One Easy Lesson.” There are lots of performances each day to keep you entertained as well as jams everywhere you look and a chance to perform on stage yourself. I assume there will be a tour of the church on Saturday (long sleeves and pants and skirts and head coverings). The ranch is only ½ hour from the entrance to Kings Canyon Park, so you might want to take a jaunt up there during one of the free times. Don't forget the excellent food and the chance to take hikes to the lake or walk along the road (especially if you don't have Verizon and have to walk to the barn to get cell phone service). The children will be arriving at mid-day on Friday and stay until after their performances on Sunday afternoon. There is no smoking at the Ranch and no alcohol while the children are there. There is a need for monetary donations for the that are given to the children and for other expenses that are incurred in order to put on this fantastic experience. There is a space on the website to do this ahead of time or you can give a check to Sherron or Ann at the registration desk while you are there. Every little bit helps. Looking forward to seeing any of you. Plan to attend! (Sue Wirt)
