Misner & Smith Saturday September 6 Misner & Smith—that’s Sam Misner and Megan Smith—are long- time Freight favorites. Sam plays guitar, Megan plays mandolin and upright bass, and when the two of them sing together, their blended voices ring. Maverick Magazine has praised their “superb harmonies” and Hicks with Sticks has called them “a Bay Area treasure to be shared...with a touch for taking simple ideas and infusing them with unexpected meaning, metaphor, and imagery.” Their latest album, Seven Hour Storm, is a collection of 11 originals that show off their sterling musicianship, poetic songwriting, and gorgeous harmonies. While in a production of Woody Guthrie’s American Song in 2004 they discovered a mutual love of American roots music, harmony sing- ing, and down-to-earth story songs. Since then, they’ve balanced their acting careers with a musical collaboration that has produced four albums, Halfway Home, Poor Player, Live at the Freight & Salvage, and now Seven Hour Storm. Earlier this year they returned to the Freight for an encore presentation of the Woody Guthrie show.     DAVE RAY: Dave "Snaker" Ray, whose ambition is to be a doctor, started playing guitar while a sophomore in high school. He origin ally began with blues (Leadbelly) to keep his fingers nimble fo r what he thought would be a classical-flamenco guitarist career. "After an adagio by Sor and a hacked-up Farruca, I began playing Led­ better's stuff exclusively, " Dave reports. He began playing the 12-string guitar when a senior in high school, and lists as early influences, Elvis' Sun label recordings, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, early Chicago, and, of course, Leadbelly. " I sing the blues because it's a medium not as demanding as literatu re or serious music, and free enough to permit a total statement of personality and. self, " Dave states. "I play blues because 1 feel it's important to me to express myself and because I feel it's a significant form of music which hasn't had enough dispersement. As far as white men playing blues, that's all who do play blues. the new Negroes are too busy (doing other things). " Discography: Blues, Rags and Hollers (Elektra EKL 240).     Sweet Haven of Mercy: Laurie Lewis Brings Bluegrass to the Columbia Gorge By Nora Candey Published in the Oregon Bluegrass Association’s newsletter Bluegrass Express, summer 2018 The Road to Menucha The morning of April 22nd 2018 saw the sun rise in a clear blue sky over Portland, Oregon. It was an anomaly in a spring locale typically shrouded in gray and rain. As my husband and I packed and prepared for our trip up the Columbia Gorge, we felt a heightening sense of excitement at the great weather and the experiences in store for us at Laurie Lewis's inaugural Bluegrass in the Gorge camp. We had both heard great things about the Menucha Retreat and Conference Center, though neither of us had been. The camp was to feature small group instruction by Laurie and friends on our instruments, singing, and songwriting. I was looking forward to improving my banjo chops with Justin Hiltner, and my husband, who had just begun playing mandolin two months prior, was unsure whether he'd be able to attend any of the workshops with Tom Rozum, as he was worried about slowing up the group as a bluegrass newbie. By that afternoon, every last detail of packing and cat-sitting was attended to, and we headed off into the Gorge. A Peaceful Place As Scott drove and I navigated us off the main road onto the hilly, wooded entrance to the Menucha grounds, I couldn't help but feel I was entering a different world. This is a lush place with a feel of magic about it, and a kind of ineffable peace is pervasive.
