Field Barns Recording Training Programme Day 1 Oral History Society Training

This course seeks to raise awareness of the importance of field barns and other traditional farm buildings to the landscape of the Heart of and to encourage local volunteers to record them.

No previous experience is required. The course will be led by Robert White, MIFA, FSA. Robert is an archaeologist who has worked on the historic environment of the Dales for over 30 years. Head from on A67 to Bowes – it is approximately 4 miles. As you enter Bowes from Barnard Castle the village hall is situated straight over the roundabout. 11.45 – 12.15 Other structures on the farm

12.15 -12.30 Discussion

12.30- 1.00 Lunch (not provided, please bring your own)

1.00-1.15 Re-use of farm buildings

1.15- 1.45 Ecological interests – presentation by TBC

1.45 – 2.45. Site visit – what to look for in a TFB (wear suitable clothing)

2.45- 3.00 Tea and coffee (provided)

3.00 – 3.30 Sources of information, levels of surveys and recording, publications

3.30- 3.45 Discussion

3.35 - 4.00 Arrangements for Day 2 if attending

Note: The barns to be visited during the day are within walking distance from the Parish Hall. In case of bad weather we might suggest driving to the site but due to limited parking we would encourage a car share. Please let us know if you would need transport or would be happy to offer it, if this situation occurred.
