DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 2

Dear Friends, How are you feeling as we head into Autumn? Are you stepping out with confidence or perhaps facing the journey ahead with trepidation? As I write this letter, still in quarantine, I’m reminiscing on my recent trip to France, where I was staying in a beautiful region of vast forests which I was determined to explore. I could see tracks leading away from the road into the trees, but there were no maps or signs to tell me where I was heading and how long the path might be. As I walked, the path became more and more overgrown and less distinct, sometimes branching and becoming impassable because of dense brambles or deep gullies, making me retrace my steps and search for an alternative route. But that wasn’t easy. The path seemed different when I headed back – it wasn’t clear which way I’d come. I began to feel a little lost and scared, not knowing what to do next, where to turn… DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 3 It made me think about our travels at the moment through Covid-time, not knowing where we’re heading; not sure how to get there, or how far away it is; worried about family and friends as well as ourselves. But retracing our steps is not an option. We can’t go back. I found a solution to my difficulties in the forest, using a facility on my phone to mark my position. Luckily this worked despite there being no phone or internet signal! I chose a point which I knew I could get home from – a lovely spot with a cluster of huge oak trees, with tracks branching out in different directions. Then I could step out in the knowledge that I could always find my way back to this point wherever I found myself, and so back to safety. I had the courage to move forward and explore, knowing that I’d find a way through this difficult, tangled undergrowth. As we travel through this pandemic, it’s hard to find a reference point – something we can trust and rely on to stop us losing our way in the tangle of new regulations and sometimes conflicting instructions. But we do have a fixed point; one we can rely on and trust; one who can see the big picture clearly through all this tangle; one who knows the needs of each one of us, every moment, whatever situation we find ourselves in. So let us mark our fixed point – look to God, as we search for our path through this forest. Don’t be discouraged if the path closes in front of you, but keep your sights on God, who is always there and guiding you; God who is constant and reliable. There will be a way through, even though we might feel scared and discouraged at the moment. So let us find our way through November with confidence, putting our trust in God. Christmas 2020 will still happen, God is with us! Cath xx

DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 4 The Rector’s Round The inaugural Rector's Round took place on Saturday the 3rd of October. We had intended this to be a large social event; an opportunity for all those in the parish who enjoy running and also the many contacts we have with folk outside the patch (through weddings and other engagements) who love running on the in too, to have the opportunity to come together and run 21 miles in a circuit of the of Linton, Burnsall and Rylstone. This as a social run rather than a race.

DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 5 The three church parishes have come together to form the Benefice of Linton, Burnsall and Rylstone. Each remains an independent parish, but we work together in partnership and share a common ministry together. Covid put pay to all our plans this year. What we had wanted to be a great social event, finishing with a barbecue at Saint Michael’s, had to be cancelled. We refigured under the rule of 6, but even then, with rising infection rates, we decided that it would be better not to gather. In the end just two of us ran… But it was glorious! The weather a perfect mix of showers and cool breeze. The route passes the seven Anglican places of worship and also Rystone Cross in a circular round moving clockwise. It’s a fun course because it takes in lots of varied topography and allows the runner to get a good grasp of the differing landscapes here in Wharfedale. Under foot we were on paths, across fields, through heather moorland, and because of the height of the Wharf we also had to ford the river, the stepping stones having mostly disappeared under water.

DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 6 Beginning at Saint Michael’s we headed across the Wharfe (well through it!), And then up into Grassington to Church House. At the top of the village we turned right on High Lane and then through the fields to arrive in Hebden. After calling at Saint Peter’s we skipped down the hill to the ghyl and onward to the Wharf and crossed by the swing bridge. We then carried on down the river to St 's at Burnsall, and along to , eventually cutting up to Saint John’s. Heading back down to the river, we waded our way across, before climbing up the bank and into the heather on Barden Moor. Along by , we then cut up to the gritstone edge of and along to the Cross at Rylstone. There was not too much to be seen in the rain and clag but we could make out and Cracoe, and it was good to feel the wind in our hair before we ran down to Saint Peter’s to give Queen Ethelreda a kiss. We had previously stashed a stock of food here under her watchful eye. Thankfully, the tups in the churchyard had not eaten our supplies so we took a moment and stocked up on carbs before heading by way of the Back Lane to Cracoe. On to Threaplands and through the fields to Linton Chapel before skirting round the footpaths back to Saint Michaels. And circuit complete.

DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 7

Like in so many things, we hope next year will give us the opportunity to pull a larger group together for a non-competitive run, and hopefully as we head down Church Lane to St Michael’s on the home straight, we’ll be drawn on by the smell of the barbeque. So what we hope will become an annual stretch of the legs for runners has begun. Not quite the start we were hoping for, but here’s to next year! If you’re a runner, come and join me. /David

DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 9 November Mission Partner - Schools Partnership

Unknown, Uncertain, Unsure

Since the beginning of September, children and young people have been encouraged to return to school, albeit in secure bubbles, with corridor masks and teacher distant classroom learning. The school community is a place of rich diversity, learning, understanding and encouragement. After six months away from the schools and the classroom many friendship groups are a very different experience.

The staff are seeking to nurture young lives to reach their potential, others trying to equip young people for the life beyond exams and major changes in the future. What about us? What part do we play ? How are we involved ?

Up until March this year I had the privilege like many others across the community of sharing at school. Daily assemblies, collective worship, clubs and groups are an excellent opportunity to get alongside children and young people, listen, encourage and on many occasions share the gospel. The uptake in RE days and staff training was an established part of my term, regrettably that has all stopped. Entry to schools, has, for the time being also stopped. I find most days, zoom and other platforms are a frequent companion. I find myself under the words of our day, called a ‘Freelancer’

DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 10 There are however new and exciting opportunities to explore and being explored going forward. Online collective worship, lessons, prayer reflections and staff support is currently being offered and taken up across the area. I am extremely grateful to members and friends from within the local church communities who support the work and continue to give financially and prayerfully, this allows ongoing opportunity for this much needed work to grow. Equipment, time, and logistics are an ongoing challenge, but we are getting there. CSP has also relocated the ‘Resources’ equipment from the closure of Cornerstone Christian Bookship in , this continues to make items available for churches, groups and schools.

So what can you Do ?

Pray, Encourage, Offer some time, Speak to Peter about the work, Ask him how he’s doing, what’s he planning.

In nurturing young lives, all of us will be aware, it takes time, has very little recognition or thanks, but can bring enormous rewards. (Unknown, Uncertain, Unsure.)

Trust, Hope, Pray.

DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 13 Grassington CE VC Primary School

We have had a fantastic first month back at Grassington Primary School and all the children and staff have settled in well, while always remembering to keep ourselves and others safe. Our new preschool is going from strength to strength, and the children are flourishing under the expert guidance of Mrs Middleton. A highlight of this half term has been our Harvest Festival. This year it had a rather different look, as we were not able to celebrate in church owing to the current restrictions. The children rose to the challenge however, and the whole school celebrated on Thursday. The younger children made and enjoyed different types of food to understand where our produce comes from, and Years 3-6 wrote poems and prayers, thanking God for the food we eat, which they performed to their peers. The children whose families are involved in farming shared their knowledge of agriculture and livestock, and we discussed how food production and how we eat has changed through history.

DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 14 As is traditional, the children kindly brought in different foodstuffs, which will be donated to Skipton Food Bank to feed those less fortunate at this time of year. Excitingly, and befitting Harvest Festival, the children recently harvested all the vegetables from our school garden. These included potatoes, leeks, runner beans, courgettes and sweetcorn. Our very talented chef, Colin, was pleased to have the produce and used it to create some tasty and healthy school lunches. The leek and potato soup was the favourite with the children. The 20th of October is our school open-day. This is a chance for prospective parents to come and have a guided tour of our lovely school, to see all the benefits that sending your child to Grassington Primary brings. If you, or someone you know, is interested then please make an appointment with the school office on 01756 752365.

Welcome to Tales From Moorclose Smallholding. We are located in Skirethorns, just off Green Lane footpath. I last wrote in June, since then our animals have expanded from 5 Cayuga ducks to 24, the only trouble is 8 are girls and 16 boys! We have rescued 30 hens, their feathers were very scruffy but now you couldn’t tell as they have feathered up well. Our hens are free range which makes the eggs really orange and taste delicious. The goats have also arrived! Nancy, Nella and Niahm are Boer Goats and they escaped on the first day we let them out! The children love the goats and so do I, they are really friendly, characterful and cute.

Matilda’s Herdwick had a lamb and she named it Teddy Bear. We sold all of our others lambs at Craven Cattle Market in Skipton, apart from three, which we will keep for breeding.

DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 16 The allotment is a working progress, but we have had a good crop of stawberries, currents, onions, peas and potatoes. The children have enjoyed digging and picking the vegtables, the peas didn’t make the pan! The catterpillers have enjoyed the cabbages, I think we need to build a cage for the cabbages next year, you do learn from your experiances. Thank you for reading! Charlotte, Ben, Lydia, Matilda and Joe Chute

Unfortunately, due to the current situation, we are unable to have open mornings in school to show off to prospective parents. However, please keep an eye on our website as we are going virtual! DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 20 Local Writers in Print If a picture paints a thousand words….

You’ll remember that 2020 was to have been the year of the ambitious UWALS Presenting the Past celebration of photographs, research, art, music, film and writing inspired by the Inman collection of 20th century photographs taken in and around Upper Wharfedale. It was obviously disappointing to have to postpone the event until May 2021, but the good news is that the collection of original writing produced as part of the project has now been published. Cunningly entitled Present in the Past, it’s available to buy now for just £10. Present in the Past is a collaboration between nine writers living locally, who have been inspired by these extraordinary images to create some wonderfully original and refreshingly varied work that is sure to amuse, intrigue, move and entertain. The group, which first came together in the summer of 2019, included previously published writers as well as those with less experience. They had been meeting regularly pre-lockdown to share new work with their fellow contributors, and it soon became clear that there was sufficient common ground between them to enable Present in the Past to be organised around several broad themes. But the joy of the collection is the sheer diversity of voice, style and genre explored by each writer.

DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES TO THE DECEMBER & JANUARY EDITION: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 21 For Eileen Leahy, the author of several beautifully told short stories such as The Last Laugh and Back End Baby, the photographs (some of which are reproduced in the book) served as catalysts for richly imagined and wryly observed narratives in which we are invited ‘inside the skin’ of a central character. For other writers, like Jack Paul (in poems like Now and Then and Reversed), Ron Norman (in poems such as Snowbound and song lyrics such as The Excursion) and Geraldine Norman (in Tied) the beguiling snapshots of Dales people going about their lives were the starting point for carefully crafted and thoughtfully reflective pieces of verse. While the work of Heather Lane (in poems such as Hawkswick,27th April and The Skirfare) draws intensely on her own closely observed responses to the history and landscape of the area, for other writers - like Mike Stephenson, Jane Hargreaves and Andrea Thompson – the images were triggers for vividly recalled reminiscences from childhood. Ian Smith’s The Perfect Village trilogy, on the other hand, consists of three very different and creatively re-imagined prose pieces informed by extensive historical research. With its fantastic variety of verse, short stories and personal anecdote, Present in the Past is the perfect antidote for those Autumn blues– and a perfect gift (dare we say ‘stocking filler?) for friends and family. It captures all that is Upper Wharfedale: its people, its history, its customs and, above all, its wonderful landscape. Copies of Present in the Past can be ordered via the UWALS website, http://www.uwals.co.uk/ - or contact Eileen Leahy (770051) or Geraldine Norman (770350).
