Are we open or closed? Businesses, routines, homes, work places, lives, hearts and minds; are they open or closed? There is much uncertainty as to just where we are in the curve of Covid-19 infection. As we begin to dispense with the strict straight lines, a whole host of questions begin to arise. I write this 2 weeks before we get to June. It is quite hard to have an idea of just where the country and the locality will be at the beginning of the month. The situation is changing fast; the only certainty is that we will not be where we are today. HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 3 At present we are getting our heads and lives around navigating the loosening of restrictions as we begin the breakout process. Many think this is too soon, especially as the local situation is somewhat different to the pattern of things in the south east of England. There is lots of anxiety and uncertainty in this new phase, and this is heightened by the 2 weeks dynamic of infection and symptoms. We don’t begin to find out what the effect of new patterns are until we have been living with them for at least 2 weeks. There are increased numbers of folk in the Dale, and there is a tension in this. The local communities do not really receive anything from the increase in numbers coming in. Businesses cannot get much support from the greater footfall because generally they are closed. Our roads are busier and there is so much more noise. But we are also very much aware of the power of the landscape in which we live, and there is a long history of hospitality and sharing of the precious jewels in our midst that is a credit to the communities here. I have spoken to many folk who are so thankful that they live in such a wonderful place in which to navigate the pandemic. Getting out on the hills, just lifting our eyes to them, raises the spirit. There is healing in the land. Many folk have also identified with the pain and difficulty of being locked up in a city or town, with very little ‘breathing space’. There has been much sympathy for families stuck in flats or small houses, without the possibility of being in a restorative landscape. How do we navigate the territory? I think it goes back to Jesus’ words about loving God, and loving our neighbours (and this in its broadest sense) as ourselves. Love God, neighbour and self. HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 4 Wharfedale has historically provided that place of recalibration, of balance and healing and ‘getting your head straight’, for very many people. Sharing it is an important part of who we are, and it is a glorious sign of good neighbourliness. Also, we like to exploit access to the cities and towns; supermarkets, shops, theatres and restaurants, not to mention railway stations, are all readily used by us. It seems only right and fair that those who live in the towns and cities should have access to the healing land in which we live. So, we are in a place of tension. Increased visitors bring increased risk of infection; but those coming need to get out of the trapped situation in which they have been held for many weeks. In this dynamic it seems that the onus is upon us to love ourselves by ensuring that the way we live is in line with the health recommendations that have been issued. We need to look after ourselves by keeping the disciplines, not by being unwelcoming to those who are coming to the Dale for solace. We are all just passing through this landscape, even those whose families have been here for generations. It is not ours in a limited sense, but ours in an open and embracing sense. After weeks of living in lockdown some of us have become more relaxed with the physical distancing/handwashing/sterilising routines. We need to be strict about these things to protect ourselves and those around us. That’s loving ourselves, and our neighbours as we love (and abide in) our loving Father. Stay safe; take good care of yourselves, those you love, and your neighbours. God’s blessing be with you. /David x HTTPS://LINTON-BURNSALL-RYLSTONE.COM/ 5 Our magazine is provided free of charge, if you’d like to receive a copy please contact Betty Hammonds on 01756 752572.
