In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredi- ents thoroughly. Mix dry in- gredients into the wet ingre- dients, and stir with a whisk until just mixed. Take care to blend lumps of flour. Stir in the melted butter. The batter will be thin. Let the batter sit for at least 15 minutes. In the meantime, preheat the waffle iron. Pour about 1/2 cup of batter, and let bake until golden brown. Transfer to a cooling rack. Vafler are traditionally served with rømme (sour cream), syltetøy (preserves), and brunost (Norwegian brown cheese). Note: Norwegian waffles are baked in a special waffle iron, which turns out an elegant flower shape that separates into five hearts.
