Generation No. 2

2. ANDREW3 PIECHOROWSKI (JAN JOHN2, LUCAS1)1 was born November 04, 1814 in Jadowniki, Posen - Prussia - Poland2, and died January 27, 1893 in Terre Coupe In2. He married MICHAELA SELERZYNSKA3 October 24, 1843 in , Poland4, daughter of WALERIAN SELERZYNSKA and MARIANNA SELERZYNSKA. Notes for ANDREW PIECHOROWSKI: Research Krzysztof Kacsmarek, Znin Pl , 2003 Having analyzed the church records. I would like to share my conclusions and suggestions concerning the Piechorowskich origin with you. First of all, Andrzej must have come to Brzyskorzystewko most probably about 1840 looking for job or he was brought here to look after sheep belonging to the owner of Brzyskorzystewko (Arnd or Frezer). Then the sheep were bred in Brzyskorzystew ( in so called Gogó³ka). Where did he come from Kcynia, ¯nin Góra, Jadowniki it`s as difficult to find out as searching for a needle in a haystack. The reason why I think so is that there are no records (Baptism, marriage, burial) about Piechurowski before 1840. Secondly, I think that the original version of your surname is PIECHUROWSKI. Do you remember the school documents I had sent you. There were names PIECHUROWSKI and PIECHOROWSKI there. The

1 root of the surname is “PIECHUR” – it means a person who wanders, a vagabound. A shepherd also wanders. The surname probably originates from the shepherd. The job was taken from father to son. Sheep are not characteristic of our region, that’s why shepherds were brought from the south of Poland, from Galicia (XV-XVIw). Thirdly, by marrying Emelia a farrmers daughter, Jan took over the farm, then he sold it and went away with his family to the USA. Andrew must have been very respected by people of the area as he and Michalina were very often asked to be godparents to children. I will send you the list of those families later.

Pozdrawiam Krzysztof

Both of Andrews God Parents were Generousa/Nobile ... perhaps this explains his education and land ownership. It may be that our early ancestors were Nobile by name and dirt poor.

Notes for JAN PIECHOROWSKI: [Piech~52.ftw]

Jan was the first Piechorowski to come to this country.

Oral History states that he came from Poznen, however, if we look at that part of Europe at that time frame, Poznen was a province of Prussia. If someone said "Poznen" at that time frame they could have been talking about either the City or the province.

The marriage certificate issued to Jan and Emelia at the church in Slupy on October 28, 1874 states that Jan was the "OVITIO" or Sheperd from the villiage of "BRZYSKORYSTEW" which is near Slupy.

Meyers Gazetteer describes the the area as a Nobles Estate of 169 residents, Kreis Znin, Posen. Civil Reg office was in Gutenwerder.

Emelia was described as "The Daughter of the Farmer from CHRPALEWO" another village near Slupy.

Jan and Emelia were married in the villiage church of Slupy, Poland on October 28,1874 by Father J. Sobeski. John was 26 and Emelia was 21.

(Per Slownik Geograficzny) At this time Slupy was part of an estate, with its own parish church in Szubin county, Kcynia deanery, 7 km southwest of Szubin. Beside the church and post office a rail station was 12 km away in Kcynia. There were 14 homes, 271 Catholic residents, 1 Protestant, 789 Hectares of land ( 311 fields, 293 medows, 20 forest), A Brick Making plant, a Mill, a Distillery, a Cheese Factory and it was known for the cultivation of Dutch Cattle.

Jan immigrated in April of 1882 leaving the German port of on the SS Donau and arriving at New York on April 15,1882. By July 5, 1882 Jan purchased the first portion of the farm in Terra Coupe In. for the sum of $435 from John and Anna Floew. He later purchased additional land from Jacob Kaugon for $225 on 1/24/1895 and from John Brake for $200 0n May 30, 1888

The Ships Manifest for the SS Donau describes the family as:

Johann, 34, M, Farmer Emelia, 27, F, Wife Helene, 4, F, Child Stanislaus, 3, M, Child Josefa, 2, F, Child Stanislawa 9mo, F, infant Andreas (Andrew) 59, M, Michaline 50, F

4 We do not know why Jan lied on his naturalization papers stating he took passage on the SS Elbe which landed a week later in New York. Perhaps it was the beginnings of the Dementia which eventually claimed his life or the fact that there was little trust in goverment by Poles of that time who were mistreated by the Germans and held in contempt by the USA locals as the lowest rung on the immigration ladder. Jan did not become a citizen until 1918 when it was neccessary to pass land to the children and he required the protection of US Title Laws.

As a former resident of Prussian Poland he was considered an enemy alien after WW1 making citizenship prudent given the German/Communist/Jingoist sentiment in post WW1 America.

PATROLMAN IS DEAD OF COLD CAUGHT AT GAME

Frank Piechorowski Loses Fight for Life After Extended Illness.

11 IN DEPARTMENT SINCE 1921

Police Headquarters Draped in Mourning; Arrangements for Funeral Incomplete.

After a game fight of more than a month for his life, Patrolman Frank Piechorowski, age 38, of 1807 West Washington Avenue, died at 12:35 this morning at St. Joseph's hospital of complication developing from a cold contracted more than a month ago. Death of the officer, while belived inevitable by his attending physicians, came with startling suddenness. He was concius almost to the end and but a few minutes before he expired he compained again of the severe pains about the region of his alling heart. During the night prior to his death he had been excedingly restless and failed to respond to drugs admiistrerd to ease his suffering. The policeman's valiant, but futile struggle for life for the past few weeks was succession of improvements and relapese or complications. Just when he seemed to be successfully passing a crisis of overcoming one infection another would develop to retard his progress. His illness originated with a cold when had its inception about the middle of November.

Notes for JOSEPHINE MARIA PIECHOROWSKI MEERS: Obituary: Josephine Meers July 9, 1917 -- Oct. 19, 2004

Josephine Marie Meers, 87, was born on July 9, 1917, in South Bend, Ind., and died on Oct. 19, 2004, in San Francisco, Calif.

Josephine graduated from Central High School in South Bend and received a B.A. degree in 1956 from Indiana University. She earned a master's degree in psychology in 1961 from George Washington University, and was elected to the Honorary Psychology Society, Psi Chi. Her father, Frank Piechorowski, a police officer, died when Josephine was 11 years old. Her mother, Laura Hosinki Piechorowski, died when Josephine was 16, leaving Josephine and three brothers with Aunt Helen, who became their legal guardian. Josephine enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and completed boot camp at Paris Island. She began active service in May 1945, and was stationed in Guam where she worked in personnel. She was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant and served in the USMC Reserve to June 1953. Josephine worked for the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C., and relocated to San Francisco in 1970. She retired from the Manpower Administration as Supervisory State Personnel Management Advisor in 1974. Her professional career was exemplary, resulting in recognition and honors from her department. Josephine was a devoted worldwide traveler, curious and respectful of the cultures she visited, and she encouraged everyone to see the world. To know Josephine was to know her love of the arts and her support of many organizations: the Sierra Club, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the San Francisco Opera, Symphony, Ballet and Public Library. Her interest in many theatre groups and her countless classes at the University of San Francisco made her a remarkable woman of any time. Her love of her church was the touchstone of her life. She was a parishioner of St. Brigid's and a loyal supporter of St. Mary's Cathedral. Josephine's independent spirit was an inspiring quality, and her compassion, generosity and positive attitude touched everyone fortunate enough to

12 share her life.

Her parents, Frank and Laura Piechorowski, guardian, Aunt Helen Meers, her cherished brothers, Frank, Henry and James Meers, and her beloved as a sister, Helen Marie Meers Timm, preceded her in death. Her love and respect for her late aunt, Helen Meers, is well-known to family and friends. Josephine was a caring sister-in-law to Nancy Meers, South Bend, Ind., Esther Meers, Anaheim, Calif., and Mary Alice Meers, Dearborn, Mich.

She was a treasured aunt to her nieces and nephews and their family as well: Jean B. Grattan of Tampa, Fla., Susanne Kisner of Albuquerque, N.M.; James Meers of Dearborn, Mich., Frederick Meers of St. Clair Shores, Mich., Michael Meers of Granite Bay, Calif., Bill Meers of Fountain Valley, Calif., Laura Meers of South Bend, Ind., Kathy Kent of Folsom, Calif., Timothy Meers of Niles, Mich., and Lisa Augello of Naperville, Ill. The family of Helen Marie and Jerome Timm was always close to her heart: Anne Rimkus of Chantilly, Va., Christopher Timm of Galena, Ohio, Edward Timm of Grover, Mo., Carol Tormey of Chicago, Ill., and Mary Haynes of Columbus, Mont. A continuing joy in her life was the companionship of her cousins, the Hosinki, Ball, McMinn and Hambidge families.

A memorial Mass for Josephine will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, at The Sequoias, 1400 Geary Blvd., San Francisco, at 4 p.m. A reception will immediately follow.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to St. Mary's Cathedral, 111 Gough Street, San Francisco, CA 94105; or to the San Francisco Ballet, 455 Franklin St., San Francisco, CA 94102. Inquires may be directed to Mike Meers, (916) 791-7703.

Notes for EUGENIA T KARASZEWSKI: Eugenia was born in Golina Russian Poland. She appears returning to the USA on October25,1905 on the Friedrich der Grosse, Bremen to NYC with her parents.

Golina is considered in the Eastern Russian Partition of Poland and is near Kronin. The family was visiting the area which we assume was the area that the Karaszewski family immigrated from in the 1890's. Oral history maintains that Stella Piechorowski who was born in Brzyskorzystew, Poland ( Prussian Partition) about 35 miles to the NW did not like Poland and encouraged Julius to return shortly after Eugenia was born. We do not know if the families knew each other in Poland. Both families were landed farmers no evidence of Gentry.

Stanislaus was born in Brzyskorzystew, Poland April 19, 1881he was the last child born in the old country when he accompanied his parents on the SS Donau to America in April of 1882 at the age of 11months.

Stanislaus worked at Singer Sewing Machine factory during the day as a cabinet maker. At night he would help Lottie with the decoration of cakes and such things as she was doing in her catering business.

I remember that one Christmas before he died he bought myself and my sister Dorothy a Doll and Buggy that we were to share, as siblings we would fight over who was to play with it and when .

I remember he picked me up and said my name in Polish and kissed me. I was four years old at the time. The next thing I remember is that people told me that he was dead and everyone was crying and I was sad.

Oral History Adeline Piechorowski Holvoet 6-19-2000

Lottie came from Poland with Dr. Abel and is wife a nurse at about the age of eight (abt. 1895). Times in Prussian Poland "Pozen" were not good with maurading German soldiers looting and pillaging Polish villiages and especially raping Polish women. Lotties father saved enough money to pay for her passage to America with the doctor and his wife to avoid this fate for his daughter. Her parents never made it to America and died in Poland of Consumption. Lottie returned to Poland with medicine for the family as there was little available in the area other than folk remedies.

Dr. Abel a "Jewish Doctor" maintained his office on Washington Street in South Bend and served a large Polish clientel until he passed away.

Mother did not speak english when we were little girls and we had to learn how at grade school. It was very hard.

Adeline cherished and loved her mother and thinks of her often to this day.

"SHE MADE ME THE LADY I AM TODAY"

Lottie was the first Polish Lady in the area to begin a Catering Business in association with St. Adelberts Church to serve ethnic weddings, birthdays, wakes ...etc.

Lottie did not use processed foods and made everything from "SCRATCH" she was a renouned cook in her day and passed the "Gene" to her Grandson Chris an execellent cook by reputation and caterer with St. Hedwig Church in South Bend.

Obituary - South Bend Tribune - June 12 1967

Bert Piechorowski, 49 owner and operation of Bert's Food Market at that address, was found dead Sunday in the font seat of his car in his garage. A brother-in-law, John Sopczynski, on a visit to Mr. Piechorowski's home, found him dead in the garage at 12:15 pm and summoned police. Dr. Harry A Ludwick, St. joseph county corner, ruled the death a suicide by carbon monoxide. Dr Ludwick estimated tht he had been dead for eight hours. Accouding to police, a key was in the car's ignition, but the motor was not running when they arrived. Police said a sister, Mrs Mary Wysocki, who lives at the Piechorowski home, told them she heard noises about 4am sunday and belived her brother may have been leaving the house then to go out to the garage. 30 or 40 feet from the house.

Adeline and Phyllis Slisz ( My Mothers Sister) were childhood friends and lived very near each other. They played baseball a lot and when the game was over theyn would have a Bon fire and Adeline would bring the potatoes that they would eat because they had a grocery store.

Adeline remembers Uncle Louie Piechorowski comming to South Bend in his Model T to pick up the girls for a summer of fun at the farm in Terre Coupe In.

" I remember as soon as it got dark Uncle Louie would say "Everyone to Bed" as there was no electricity and everything was dark. It was scary going to the bedroom in the dark and there was a Big Tree outside the window with a Hoot Owl in it that scared the Devil out of my sister and I.

21 Take me home I said I don't want to come back here again...."

Uncle Louie also wanted the girls to do farm chores which might have also effected thier choice to go home !!!!

After Stanley died Uncle Louie looked after the girls, he was Adelines Godfather and gave her away at her wedding to George.

One only has to be in the home of George and Adeline for a few moments to be a "Friend of the House". They are kind and gracious people in the tradition of thier respective parents and they obviously love each other and thier children very much.

While I was there little Miles & Evan called from Indianapolis and immediately became the center of attention.

Miles, Evan and Jarod as you read this in the future know that you are very fortunate to have a GranPa to take you fishing and teach you what he has learned in life and a GranMa ( Boosha ) in our terms who is there to hold and teach you.

You are the product and end result of thier lives and a little bit of them will be in your soul for all of your life. Pass this to your children as it is the most precious treasure you can give them.

23 Before Sophie married Uncle Al in 1929 she had spent four years studying to become a Holy Cross Nun. She did not take her final vows. Sophie was an expert seamstress at Notre Dame sewing the vestments for the preist's.

Sophie was also an expert baker and as a child she would babysit for me when my father Frank A., had meetings to attend in the evenings. She also had a habit of using large quantiteis of "Moth Balls" to sanitise her house. The sent of these Moth Balls impregnated the flour she baked with and we all remember joking about " Aunt Sophies's Moth Ball Cookies"

Notes for FRANK A. PIECHOROWSKI: [Piech~52.ftw]

When the depression hit he went into CCC Camp.

Oral History from Frank D Piechorowski: He used to tell me stories of CCC camp.

He worked as a baker there.

He used to make the BEST pie crusts. He would mix them up right on the counter top, no measuring... did it all by feel. I remember he would take all the extra crust bits and cut them into strips and bake them with Cinnamon and sugar. I can still taste them 20 years later.

Once, he and the boys snuck out of camp one night and raided a local watermelon field, they brought all the watermelons back to camp and hid them all in the ceiling. The weight of the melons up there caused the ceiling to sag the commander noticed and had one of the men get a ladder and nail the ceiling back up. Well of course the when he tried to nail it back up, he hit a watermelon and this red liquid started to drip down on the floor, the commander though they had a body up in the ceiling. He said they got in SO much trouble.

In another, he told me of one way they would "Initiate" the new guys. They would come in, in the middle of the night, and have a "Short Arm Inspection". One guy would act as the officer, and one as a doctor. The "Doctor" would have a can of black shoe polish. After they were "Inspected" they would get a dob of shoe polish on them. Of course, as soon as they saw their "doctor" in the ranks with them they knew they had been had, but shoe polish can't be washed off... It has to wear off.

We know that Frank came to work for Ludwik (Uncle Louie) when his mother died, c. 1936

Oral History from Evelyn: Kasper Slisz, Evelyn Father taught Frank how to hunt and fish, in that time for food, not for sport.

He married Evelyn and went to work for Oliver Corp.

Evelyn and Frank were married for nearly 50 years, residing at Fir Road in Granger. They attended St. Pius X Church since moving to Granger in 1955. Their lives were punctuated by hard work, love of family and a zest for life. As a child of the Depression, Evelyn would feed any (man or beast) who wandered too near the home, and was renowned for always having that second turkey on hand for Thanksgiving Day if anyone was really hungry.

She adored her grandchildren and was always on hand when needed to wipe a tear or sing their praises. Her last years were hard but she is happy now in the presence of her God and the love of her husband.

Evie will be missed by all who had the good fortune to cross her path.

A formal Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mom at St. Katherine's of Alexandria in Brzyskorzystew, Poland, the church of our ancestors.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 24, in THE ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 E. Ireland Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, May 25, in the funeral home, followed by burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery, South Bend.

Oral History from Elsie: They were introduced by Aunt Elsie when she was fifthteen. She played basketball for St Adelbert's grade school.... Frank played ball on the men's team... Elsie and Evelyn used to go to dances and ZB Falcon's almost every Saturday night, and one night Elsie introduced them. Elsie's Husband Uncle Elmer was in CC Camp with Frank.

Oral History from Evelyn: My mother used to say, when I was young, "That one's going to be a clean one", because when by the time I was old enough to pick up a rag, I was going around the house dusting.

When I first met Frank, he didn't turn me on, he came over at least 3 times that night and asked me to dance, but I came up with an excuse each time. Several Saturdays after that he kept coming and asking me to dance, so finally I figured, what can it hurt, and I danced with him. We had the rest of that evening. He took me home and we made a date for next Tuesday because the Cole Brothers Circus was in . That was our first date.

Marriage Notes for FRANK PIECHOROWSKI and EVELYN SLISZ: [Piech~52.ftw]

Oral History from Evelyn Piechorowski Frank took and purposed to Evelyn on Christmas eve, 1937. He bought a box of chocolates and put the ring in the box for her to find. When she opened the box she said "Ohhh Chocolate...", and was very disappointed because he had bought her candy for Valentines day. She thought, but didn't say "Am I ever going to be engaged to you?". Frank could see that she was disapointed so he let her stew for a few days and called her back asking if she had eaten the candy yet. She said she had had a few pieces. He told her to go have some more and tell him how she liked them... that's when she found the ring.

Frank Earned the money to buy both Evelyn's engagement ring and their wedding ring with the help of Ludwik (Uncle Louie). Ludwik gave frank a plot of land on the farm that Frank was to grow and tend pickles on. All the money that he made from the pickles is what he used to buy the rings. v.
