This biographical drama tells the story of Max Manus, perhaps the most famous resistance fighter in Norway during World War II. Max Manus, who after fighting as a volunteer for Finland in the Soviet-Finnish Winter War of 1939–40, returned to Norway on the day of the German invasion of Norway, April 9, 1940. He was a pioneer of the Norwegian resistance movement and was arrested by the Gestapo in 1941. He escaped to the United Kingdom for training and went back as a saboteur for the Norwegian Independent Company 1, better known as Lingekompaniet. He became a specialist in ship sabotage and sank ships that were important to the German Kriegsmarine, including the SS Donau on January 16, 1945. Max was famous for being one of the most brilliant saboteurs during World War II. After the war he wrote several books about his adventures and started the successful office supply company Max Manus AS. He was awarded Norway's highest decoration for military gallantry, the War Cross with Sword. In addition to his Nor- wegian decorations, Manus received the British Military Cross and Bar. During the final years of his life, Manus and his wife Tikken lived primarily in Spain, where he died at the age of 81 in 1996.     EXPLORING ANTI-SEMITISM IN THE CLASSROOM A case study among Norwegian Adolescents from minority backgrounds Paul Thomas, PhD University of Oslo Department of Education Introduction This study explores high school students’ views of Jews in one minority-dominated school in Oslo, Norway (with the pseudonym “Junior High”). Employing a qualitative approach, semi- structured interview guides and classroom-based discussions teased out attitudes towards Jews drawing on questions from a nation-wide research conducted by The Center for Studies of the Holocaust and Religious Minorities (2102). The findings are analysed through the conceptual prism of anti-social capital and the literature on anti-Semitism with a focus on Jean-Paul Sartre’s (1948) analysis. This study warns that failure to pay attention to the increasing fragmentation of the educational landscape in Norway along ethnico-religious lines will serve to undercut teacher’s efforts to combat anti-Semitism. This task is made all the more urgent given recent demographic projections warning that the skewed schooling distribution along ethnic lines will only get worse with time. At the beginning of 2013, Norway had 593 000 immigrants (11.7 per cent of the population) and 117 000 Norwegian- born to immigrant parents, together 14.1 per cent of the total population. In 2006 the numbers were 320 000 and 68 000, respectively. Of all immigrants and Norwegian-born to immigrant parents, 42.6 per cent had a background from EU etc., 57.4 per cent had a background from Africa, Asia etc. The largest groups of immigrants came from Poland, Sweden, Lithuania, Germany and Somalia (between 77 000 and 24 000).

Following the World’s Fair, the stave church made its second move to a vacation estate in Lake Geneva, Wis., and eventually settled in Blue Mounds, Wis., by Isak Dahle in 1935. Here Dahle went on to found Little Norway, a living museum on a Norwegian homestead from the mid-1800s. The tourist attraction featured the stave church as the showcase as well as more than 7,000 Nor- wegian and Norwegian-American artifacts, the largest private collection of such objects See > STAVE CHURCH, page 13 Photo: Micha L. Sylvia Loewy (née Garai, b. August 18, 1911, in New York, United States, d. December 14, 1977, Olso, Norway) was a dual American and German citizen. Fritz (b. November 27, 1898, in Berlin, Germany, d. December 1942, in Auschwitz, Poland) served in the German army during the First World War and worked in a ribbon factory and in the export trade; he made wreath ribbons after immigrating to Oslo as a specialized worker. On October 26, 1942, Fritz, along with other Jewish men in Oslo, was arrested by the Norwegian state police, transferred first to Bredtveit prison, then to Berg internment camp, and then deported to Auschwitz on the transport ship SS Donau on November 26, 1942. Sylvia was imprisoned in the Grini concentration camp on January 22, 1942 and released on February 11, 1942, possibly due to her American citizenship. She fled Norway for Sweden and was resident in Stockholm on December 5, 1942. From Stockholm, Sylvia mailed several postcards to her husband, Fritz, care of shtetls, ghettos and concentration camps in the Polish General Government area. After the war, Sylvia returned to Oslo, where she had a sister, Ingeburg. She placed an obituary for her husband in an Oslo newspaper in 1945. Sylvia Loewy died in Oslo on December 14, 1977.
