Here we found our first flowers, the extremely common Autumn Squill Prospero autumnale, the striped, hooded spathes of Friar’s Cowl Arisarum vulgare, and a number of Crocus mazziaricus. A few butterflies included Long-tailed Blue, Lang’s Short-tailed Blue, Eastern Bath White, Mallow Skipper and a Pigmy Skipper. We continued along the newly-completed coast road, before turning inland and climbing steeply into the mountains. We arrived in Kalavrita around 6pm and after settling in to our hotel, we enjoyed a delicious meal of home-cooked food at a nearby taverna. Day 2 Thursday 25th October We awoke to a sunny day with cloud over the mountains. Above Kalavrita, we explored an area of Kermes Oak scrub and open pasture, where we found more white Crocus mazziaricus and Crocus melantherus. Crocus melantherus, as its name suggests can be distinguished from other autumn-flowering species by its black anthers and purple feathering on the outer tepals. Cyclamen hederifolium was common under the shade of the trees. -

PWster Harvard University Herbaria, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA Received 5 May 2004; revised 17 December 2004 Available online 22 April 2005 Abstract To provide a robust phylogeny of Pezizaceae, partial sequences from two nuclear protein-coding genes, RPB2 (encoding the sec- ond largest subunit of RNA polymerase II) and -tubulin, were obtained from 69 and 72 specimens, respectively, to analyze with nuclear ribosomal large subunit RNA gene sequences (LSU). The three-gene data set includes 32 species of Peziza, and 27 species from nine additional epigeous and six hypogeous (truZe) pezizaceous genera. Analyses of the combined LSU, RPB2, and -tubulin data set using parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian approaches identify 14 Wne-scale lineages within Pezizaceae. Species of Peziza occur in eight of the lineages, spread among other genera of the family, conWrming the non-monophyly of the genus. Although parsimony analyses of the three-gene data set produced a nearly completely resolved strict consensus tree, with increased conWdence, relationships between the lineages are still resolved with mostly weak bootstrap support. Bayesian analyses of the three- gene data, however, show support for several more inclusive clades, mostly congruent with Bayesian analyses of RPB2. No strongly supported incongruence was found among phylogenies derived from the separate LSU, RPB2, and -tubulin data sets. The RPB2 region appeared to be the most informative single gene region based on resolution and clade support, and accounts for the greatest number of potentially parsimony informative characters within the combined data set, followed by the LSU and the -tubulin region. -

Four new species, Temnothorax cuneinodis, T. xanthos, T. pisarskii and T. michali are described from North Korea. L. galeatus WHEELER is synonymised with T. nassonovi (RUZSKY) and L. wui WHEELER is raised to species rank (in the genus Temnothorax). Key words: ants, Leptothorax, Temnothorax, taxonomy, new species, key, East Palaearctic INTRODUCTION The genus Leptothorax was described by MAYR in 1855, and a few years later he described the closely related genus Temnothorax (MAYR, 1861). For many years, the latter was regarded by different authors either as a good genus or as a subgenus of Leptothorax, but during the last decade it was considered to be a junior synonym of Leptothorax (BOLTON, 1995). BINGHAM (1903) designated Formica acervorum FABRICIUS, 1793 as the type-species of the genus Leptothorax. About the same time RUZSKY (1904) de- scribed the genus Mychothorax, to which F. acervorum was also assigned as type species (by original designation); later Mychothorax was considered as a subgenus of Leptothorax, insomuch that EMERY (1912, 1921) designated Myrmica clypeata MAYR, 1853 as the type species of Leptothorax. All subsequent authors placed the species with 11-jointed antennae in the subgenus Mychothorax and those with 12-jointed antennae in the subgenus Leptothorax s. -

Myrmecologische Nachrichten 25-35 Wien, Jan. 2001 Multiple Hybridisierung von Arten der Ameisen-Gattung Epimyrma (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), und Beobachtungen zur Ausbeutung der Wirtsarten durch die Parasiten Alfred Buschinger Abstract Multiple hybridization of ant species of the genus Epimyrma (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), and ob- servations on host exploitation by the parasite species. - Various species of the parasitic ant genus Epimyrma were experimentally hybridized. Because in a number of species the sexuals mate inside the nest it is possible to replace the male pupae of one species by male pupae of another species. After the heterospecific sexuals had mated, young queens were placed singly into artificial nests, together with a few host workers from the mother colony and some host species larvae and worker pupae, for colony foundation. After hibemation, host worker pupae were added until the young colony comprised about 40- 50 host workers. Young (hybrid) females and workers developed from the eggs of the cross-mated queens in this first year, or after a second hibemation. Hybrid females in the same way could be cross- mated with males of a third species, and so on. One of the experiments resulted in the production of fe- male hybrids composed of two populations of Epimyrma kraussei (from Morocco and Crete), E. birgitae (from Teneriffa), E. bernardi (from Spain) and an undescribed Epimyrma species close to E. stumperi (from Greece). Other hybridizations were possible with E. birgitae x E. bernardi, and with E. kraussei x E. algeriana, always with production of numerous hybrid gynes and variable numbers of workers. However, hybrid females practically never had hybrid male offspring. -
