The Three Themes of Positive Coaching:
• Redefining “Winner” – A positive coach helps a player redefine what it means to be a “winner”. Rather than only focusing on the scoreboard, players learn to focus on mastery as well, which emphasizes effort, learning and improvement, and developing the courage to make mistakes and to rebound from them? • Filling Emotional Tanks – A positive coach fills players; “Emotional Tanks”, recognizing that athletes need to have full tanks to be able to play their best. • Honoring the game …
Before the Game: • Tell your child you are proud of him or her regardless of how well he or she plays. • Make a commitment to Honor the Game no matter what others might think.
During the Game: • Cheer for your team not against the other team. • Refrain from booing the officials even when they make a questionable call. • Encourage others to Honor the Game. • Remember to have FUN. Enjoy the day!
After the Game: • Thank the coaches and officials for their efforts • Refrain from gloating if your team won – simply enjoy it. • Focus on the good plays your team made if your team loses. • Tell your child again that you are proud of him or her! (Especially if the game did not go well)
