THE PALGRAVE MACMILLAN ANIMAL ETHICS SERIES Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics Kenneth R. Valpey The Palgrave Macmillan Animal Ethics Series Series Editors Andrew Linzey Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics Oxford, UK Priscilla N. Cohn Pennsylvania State University Villanova, PA, USA Associate Editor Clair Linzey Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics Oxford, UK In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the ethics of our treatment of animals. Philosophers have led the way, and now a range of other scholars have followed from historians to social scientists. From being a marginal issue, animals have become an emerging issue in ethics and in multidisciplinary inquiry. Tis series will explore the challenges that Animal Ethics poses, both conceptually and practically, to traditional understandings of human-animal relations. Specifcally, the Series will: • provide a range of key introductory and advanced texts that map out ethical positions on animals • publish pioneering work written by new, as well as accomplished, scholars; • produce texts from a variety of disciplines that are multidisciplinary in character or have multidisciplinary relevance. • Eyes Wide Open the SPRINGMONT NEWSLETTER - ALUMNI EDITION Summer 2020
eyes wide open THE SPRINGMONT NEWSLETTER - ALUMNI EDITION Summer 2020 IN THIS ISSUE Dear Springmont Alumni and Alumni Families: What a trying year 2020 has been so far! In my 19 2 Letter from the years as a Head of School, this has easily been the Head of School, most challenging to navigate, and I’m sure many continued of you have had similar experiences at work and at home. I owe a great amount of gratitude to the Covid-19 Springmont community for the many ways we Emergency have pulled together to handle this unprecedented Tuition situation and the obstacles it presented. Assistance Fund Springmont’s last day of on-campus lessons was Thursday, March 12th. On March 13th Parent/ 3 Congratulations Teacher Conferences took place as scheduled, and Class of 2020 we dismissed for the weekend with plans for Faculty and Staff to return to campus the following Monday to organize and strategize for what we thought 4 Maria’s 150th would be two weeks of remote learning. By Sunday, Birthday I alerted Faculty and Staff not to report to campus the following day as the risk of infection was increasing by the moment. Alumni Association It’s said that “necessity is the mother of invention” and that certainly was accurate. Changes Many in the modern workplace are equipped to work from home as needed, but that was not the case for educators, especially those dedicated to the hands-on/experiential pedagogy of the Montessori experience. Our teachers, assistants, specialists and 5 As Seen on administration worked tirelessly to launch a Learning From Home program that was Instagram student-centered and honored Springmont’s mission and core values.

  • Handel's Oratorios and the Culture of Sentiment By
Virtue Rewarded: Handel’s Oratorios and the Culture of Sentiment by Jonathan Rhodes Lee A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Davitt Moroney, Chair Professor Mary Ann Smart Professor Emeritus John H. Roberts Professor George Haggerty, UC Riverside Professor Kevis Goodman Fall 2013 Virtue Rewarded: Handel’s Oratorios and the Culture of Sentiment Copyright 2013 by Jonathan Rhodes Lee ABSTRACT Virtue Rewarded: Handel’s Oratorios and the Culture of Sentiment by Jonathan Rhodes Lee Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Davitt Moroney, Chair Throughout the 1740s and early 1750s, Handel produced a dozen dramatic oratorios. These works and the people involved in their creation were part of a widespread culture of sentiment. This term encompasses the philosophers who praised an innate “moral sense,” the novelists who aimed to train morality by reducing audiences to tears, and the playwrights who sought (as Colley Cibber put it) to promote “the Interest and Honour of Virtue.” The oratorio, with its English libretti, moralizing lessons, and music that exerted profound effects on the sensibility of the British public, was the ideal vehicle for writers of sentimental persuasions. My dissertation explores how the pervasive sentimentalism in England, reaching first maturity right when Handel committed himself to the oratorio, influenced his last masterpieces as much as it did other artistic products of the mid- eighteenth century. When searching for relationships between music and sentimentalism, historians have logically started with literary influences, from direct transferences, such as operatic settings of Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, to indirect ones, such as the model that the Pamela character served for the Ninas, Cecchinas, and other garden girls of late eighteenth-century opera.

  • Paradise Lost and Pullman's His Dark Materials
Mythic Rhetoric: Influence and Manipulation in Milton's Paradise Lost and Pullman's His Dark Materials Rhys Edward Pattimore A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Manchester Metropolitan University for the degree of Masters by Research Department of Interdisciplinary Studies MMU Cheshire 2015 1 Declaration I declare that this is my own work, that I have followed the code of academic good conduct and have sought, where necessary, advice and guidance on the proper presentation of my work. Printed Name: Signature: 2 Acknowledgments For my family and friends: without your love, support and patience I could not have hoped to achieve what I have. I love you all. To my tutors; I cannot thank you enough; I’m eternally grateful for your never-ending encouragement and invaluable assistance throughout the year. Finally, to the authors who have influenced my writing: their stories are my inspiration and without them, this simply would not have happened. 3 Contents Page - Abstract Page 5 - Note on Abbreviations Page 6 - Introduction Page 7 - Chapter One Page 26 - Chapter Two Page 43 - Chapter Three Page 78 - Conclusion Page 119 - Glossary of Rhetorical Terms Page 125 - Appendix: Quotations Page 129 - Bibliography Page 135 4 Abstract John Milton’s Paradise Lost and Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials are two grand feats of mythic storytelling. Through their compelling stories, reinforced by influential rhetoric, each possesses the ability to affect individuals who read them. These myths work to influence their audiences without the author’s own personal beliefs being forced upon them (such as Milton’s scathing condemnation of certain styles of poetry, or Pullman’s overtly critical view of Christianity).

134 th Commencement MAY 2021 Welcome Dear Temple graduates, Congratulations! Today is a day of celebration for you and all those who have supported you in your Temple journey. I couldn’t be more proud of the diverse and driven students who are graduating this spring. Congratulations to all of you, to your families and to our dedicated faculty and academic advisors who had the pleasure of educating and championing you. If Temple’s founder Russell Conwell were alive to see your collective achievements today, he’d be thrilled and amazed. In 1884, he planted the seeds that have grown and matured into one of this nation’s great urban research universities. Now it’s your turn to put your own ideas and dreams in motion. Even if you experience hardships or disappointments, remember the motto Conwell left us: Perseverantia Vincit, Perseverance Conquers. We have faith that you will succeed. Thank you so much for calling Temple your academic home. While I trust you’ll go far, remember that you will always be part of the Cherry and White. Plan to come back home often.
