BALD EAGLE  Woodpeckers & Allies  Kinglets & Gnatcatchers  NORTHERN HARRIER  YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER  GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET  RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET  CHIPPING SPARROW  Buttercup Farm Audubon Sanctuary is 641 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER  FIELD SPARROW  acres comprised of old farm fields, shrub-scrub Thrushes  SAVANNAH SPARROW  , and wetlands along the Wappinger Creek. Bisected by Route 82, the sanctuary EASTERN BLUEBIRD  FOX SPARROW  offers the visitor varied birding opportunities. VEERY  SONG SPARROW  SWAINSON’S THRUSH SWAMP SPARROW   Easily accessible old railroad beds on the HERMIT THRUSH  WHITE-THROATED SPARROW  sanctuary's west side follow the Wappinger WOOD THRUSH  WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW  Creek where long-legged waders as well as AMERICAN ROBIN  DARK-EYED JUNCO  rails, ducks, and peeps can be seen. A scenic Mimic Thrushes  overlook on the east side gives visitors a GRAY CATBIRD  Cardinals, Grosbeaks & Allies  commanding view of Stissing Mountain and the NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD  NORTHERN CARDINAL  valley below. Continue on the trail through an old orchard, keeping watch for Baltimore BROWN THRASHER  ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK  Orioles and Brown Thrashers, as you loop back Starlings  INDIGO BUNTING  to the parking area. EUROPEAN STARLING  Blackbirds & Allies  Waxwings  BOBOLINK  Over a dozen warbler species have been seen CEDAR WAXWING  RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD  here, especially during spring migration. These Wood Warblers  EASTERN MEADOWLARK  include Golden-winged, Bay-breasted and BLUE-WINGED WARBLER  RUSTY BLACKBIRD  Blackpoll Warblers. Look for vireos throughout NASHVILLE WARBLER  COMMON GRACKLE  the sanctuary, especially Yellow-throated Vireo that can be seen up close along the creek. NORTHERN PARULA  BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD  White-eyed Vireos have been tallied here as YELLOW WARBLER ORCHARD ORIOLE   well. Look for field birds, such as Bobolink, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER  BALTIMORE ORIOLE  Eastern Meadowlarks, and Field, Savannah, MAGNOLIA WARBLER  Finches  and Song sparrows. BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER  PURPLE FINCH  YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER  HOUSE FINCH  Raptors that call Buttercup home include BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER  AMERICAN GOLDFINCH  American Kestrel and Broad-winged, Red- BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER   tailed, Red-shouldered, Sharp-shinned, and Coopers Hawks. Also seen are the occasional PINE WARBLER  Old World Sparrows  Bald Eagles all year and, in the winter, Golden PRAIRIE WARBLER  HOUSE SPARROW  Eagles. Listen for Barred and Eastern Screech- PALM WARBLER  Owls throughout the sanctuary.
