The Salt Lake City School District and the University of Utah School of Education co-spon sored the fourth Annual Stegner Young Writing Scholars' Institute (The Stegner Institute) in June, 2012. This publication, Our Voices 2012, is the final product which celebrates SLCSD as developing writers. The life of Wallace Stegner provides inspiration for the work done through out the Stegner Institute: Wallace Stegner is a distinguished writer, past resident of Salt Lake and alumnus of East High School. The Stegner Institute is made possible by generous support from the Salt Lake City School District, the Salt Lake Foundation, University of Utah, Rio Tinto, The East High Alumni Foundation, and the Utah Humanities Council. To learn more a~out how you can help support The Stegner Institute, please contact Michael Williams, Director of Devel opment and External Relations, at [email protected].

The purpose of The Stegner Institute is to instruct and encourage student writers to find strength in their writer's voice and commit their arguments to paper, using evidence, logic and specific examples to support their claims. A secondary purpose is to allow teachers of writing to collaboratively hone their teaching skills. To accomplish these goals, The Stegner Institute invites high school students and secondary English Language Arts teachers from the Salt Lake City School District to discover the power of writing during a two-week vvriting institute on the University of Utah campus. For the 10 days of the Writing Institute, students and teachers are immersed in writing work shops for four-hours each day. During the first week, students and faculty select a topic of inter est, research it, and begin to articulate their claims. During the second week, students focus on supporting their claims with evidence then revising their writing. The end product is a well-sup ported argumentative essay that is ready for publication.

Our Voices Magazine 2012 is a collection of the essays written by Stegner Institute students and teachers from the summer of 2012. In this collection you will encounter many tender and thought-provoking beliefs and arguments. You will not share all the beliefs represented in the essays and neither does the Stegner Institute faculty nor The Salt Lake City School District. If you read an essay that disturbs you, we encourage you to either stop reading it or discuss it with a parent, teacher or friend. Both the student author and the Stegner Institute faculty have tried to ensure that the information in each essay is accurate and that the writing is polished. Please remember that these are essays are written by developing authors. Publishing student writing encourages the reluctant writer, strengthens students' self-confidence, rewards interest and careful revision as well as provides writers with the opportunity to refine their thinking and ex press their opinions to a wider audience.

According to the National Crime Pre vention Center, over 40% of all teenagers with Internet access have rep01ted being bullied online during the past year. Those who disagree with me say that there is no way schools can stop bullying; however, 1 disagree with that statement because of all the research I have read about bullies. L strongly believe that they can stop bullying if teachers and princi pals would speak out more to students about this issue in school. Statistics show at www.bullyingstatistics.org that only about 17% of schools in the U.S speak out about bullying. Imagine if just 10% more schools would speak out for ten years, how many bully suicide cases would de crease, or how many more kids would feel safer about coming to school. That would mean less fights and arguments in schools and more kids in class; a better education. The school could even get a medal for being the best outspoken about bullying. Who knows? But the education would fly through the roof! ! In conclusion, high school students need to grow up and stop bullying. Even tually fewer bully suicide cases would happen. I care about this issue because it breaks my heart to see people bully other students, when really they are all the same. It would be great to see bullying stop, and that's what r soon hope for. Dominic Graffiti mtists should have their own specific place to graffiti such as a graffiti studio Science Center where they can show their love for mt and they would not be "destroying" our streets. A recent survey done by the Salt Lake Tribune said, "only 3% of residents in West Valley City considered graffiti to be the community's top concern. That's down 19% from 2004 and 26% in 1998." These statistics shows that people are not as concerned about graffiti art as they were in 1998. For example, my uncle likes to tag all over the side of his garage. This got me thinking why doesn't he just go to a public place to tag and not tag all over his garage? Well, the answer is he would be committing a crime. He needs to have a bigger space to show his art than on this small garage. Communities should build a place where graffiti mtists can show their love for art. Another reason graffiti artists should have their own specific place to graffiti is so when they show their graffiti all over the walls in their own specific place it would not be a crime. The Seattle Times Newspaper states, " In Seattle the cost of the removal of graffiti was almost I million dollars. The removal for graffiti on the busses was $734,000." If there was a specific place where people could do their graffiti, less money would be spent to clean over illegal graffiti. For example, this family by my grandpa's house has a white vinyl fence, and they do not care if there is graffiti over it because some of the art work that goes on that fence is really good. AND I am Mexican American and proud, but when people judge me before they know any thing about me just based on my appear ance, I feel angty because it's unjust.
