The consequences of such overreaching power are manifestin the public sphere as a hegemonic system in which freemarket capitalism is portrayed as democratic and necessaryto serve the needs of the public. This thesis focusesspecifically on two versions of the Society of ProfessionalJournalist Codes of Ethics 1987 and 1996, thought to influencethe output of news organizations. This analysis exposes the problems inherent in the news media's focusof objectivity-an implicit patriarchal capitalist ideology-through Jon Lye's (1997) methods of critical ideological analysis. It is also significantlyinformed by research in the areas of Political Economy, and Critical and Cultural studies. A historical and sociological review of the Society of Professional Journalist Codes of Ethics reveals the complexities of objectivity, unitary rationality and use of officialsources which legitimize the news and the illusion of democracy. The Society of Professional Journalists Code ofEthics-1996 ...................170 REFERENCES ................................................................................ 174 IV 1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION AND RA TI ONALE Introduction While the current age has been described as the 'informationage', the 'global era' and the 'digital age', the U.S. has recently arrived at an era where a technologically advanced market driven capitalist society operates through the corporate lens of autocratic interests perpetuated through the illusion of democratic ideals. The mainstream information media established to support citizen consciousness and thus, democratic participation in the public sphere, has lost their purpose amidst the current "regime of truth". The inadequacy of the news continues daily, for our news agencies are run by advertising revenue, boards of trustees and corporate shareholders whose pursuit of profit strangle competing meanings out of an informedcitizenry. Such public information systems initially instilled to facilitatedemocratic participation, deriving fromnotions of objectivity and Enlightenment rationality, are suppressed under a hegemonic order that perpetuates illusions of professionalized neutrality. A corporate and lobbyist guided autocratic government perpetuates the dominant ideology of free market capitalism through neo-liberalism rather than operating through richly diverse democratic practices. This is accomplished through projecting a perception of objective, neutral news. The media's veil of objectivity is necessary to enable the public to derive an all-encompassing world view so as to make decisions within the often imperceptible elite corporate structure. Within this economically monopolized and institutionalized vision of reality journalist codes of ethics perpetuate rigid categorical 2 distinctions, gross oversimplificationand highly abstract generalizations. This research will address these particular practices. However it should be noted that the significance of other discursive practices such as the creation of mythic character and competition researched by Alterman (2003) and Lule (2002), are beyond the scope of this particular study. These ideologically obscured discursive practices are the mechanisms by which the news educates the public and perpetuates the notion of objectivity. Such mechanisms further substantiate not only the claims in the news but the method in which news information is acquired and disseminated, thereby perpetuating the dominant epistemological framework of unitary rationality and over generalized dichotomized discourse. Additionally, the dominant ideology of corporate owned, commercially driven and sensationalized media perpetuates the illusion of democracy through the pervasive discourse of binary oppositions. This dualistic thinking limits possibility and the creative discourse necessary for a rich and vibrant public sphere. Moreover, the downward spiral of oversimplificationin news media controls the epistemic framework in which knowledge of reality is fostered. Notions of dualism and binary oppositions in language are explicated in the literature review under the subsections, Language and ideology, Hegemony and The Veil of Objectivity. The thesis asserts that objectivity and codes of ethics used by professional journalists are the myths utilized to maintain the belief that news language is not political or economic language. Insofar as journalistsare complicit in such practices they further authorize these myths and promote their legitimacy. Once accepted, the myth of 3 objectivity allows corporate media to classify

    Undergraduate Journal of Psychology 22 Libertarianism, Culture, and Personal Predispositions Ida Hepsø, Scarlet Hernandez, Shir Offsey, & Katherine White ​ Kennesaw​ State University Abstract The United States has exhibited two potentially connected trends – increasing individualism and increasing interest in libertarian ideology. Previous research on libertarian ideology found higher levels of individualism among libertarians, and cross-cultural research has tied greater individualism to making dispositional attributions and lower altruistic tendencies. Given this, we expected to observe positive correlations between the following variables in the present research: individualism and endorsement of libertarianism, individualism and dispositional attributions, and endorsement of libertarianism and dispositional attributions. We also expected to observe negative correlations between libertarianism and altruism, dispositional attributions and altruism, and individualism and altruism. Survey results from 252 participants confirmed a positive correlation between individualism and libertarianism, a marginally significant positive correlation between libertarianism and dispositional attributions, and a negative correlation between individualism and altruism. These results confirm the connection between libertarianism and individualism observed in previous research and present several intriguing questions for future research on libertarian ideology.     In 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the U.S. At the time, Ben Bagdikian was called "alarmist" for pointing this out in his book, The Media Monopoly . In his 4th edition, published in 1992, he wrote "in the U.S., fewer than two dozen of these extraordinary creatures own and operate 90% of the mass media" -- controlling almost all of America's newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. He predicted then that eventually this number would fall to about half a dozen companies. This was greeted with skepticism at the time. When the 6th edition of The Media Monopoly was published in 2000, the number had fallen to six. Since then, there have been more mergers and the scope has expanded to include new media like the Internet market. More than 1 in 4 Internet users in the U.S. now log in with AOL Time-Warner, the world's largest media corporation. In 2004, Bagdikian's revised and expanded book, The New Media Monopoly , shows that only 5 huge corporations -- Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, and Viacom (formerly CBS) -- now control most of the media industry in the U.S. General Electric's NBC is a close sixth.     sUMMER 2017 • Volume 26 • Number 2 Welcome Home “Son, we’re moving to Oregon.” Hearing these words as a high school freshman in sunny Southern California felt – to a sensitive teenager – like cruel and unusual punishment. Save for an 8-bit Oregon Trail video game that always ended with my player dying of dysentery, I knew nothing of this “Oregon.” As proponents extolled the virtues of Oregon’s picturesque Cascade Mountains, I couldn’t help but mourn the mountains I was leaving behind: Space, Big Thunder and the Matterhorn (to say nothing of Splash, which would open just months after our move). I was determined to be miserable. But soon, like a 1990s Tom Hanks character trying to avoid falling in love with Meg Ryan, I succumbed to the allure of the Pacific Northwest. I learned to ride a lawnmower (not without incident), adopted a pygmy goat and found myself enjoying things called “hikes” (like scenic drives without the car). I rafted white water, ate pink salmon and (at legal age) acquired a taste for lemon wedges in locally produced organic beer. I became an obnoxiously proud Oregonian. So it stands to reason that, as adulthood led me back to Disney by way of Central Florida, I had a special fondness for Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. Inspired by the real grandeur of the Northwest but polished in a way that’s unmistakably Disney, it’s a place that feels perhaps less like the Oregon I knew and more like the Oregon I prefer to remember (while also being much closer to Space Mountain).

    Talking Up Our Products With the weekly influx of new roleplaying titles, it’s almost impossible to keep track of every product in every RPG line in the adventure games industry. To help you organize our titles and to aid customers in finding information about their favorite products, we’ve designed a set of point-of-purchase dividers. These hard-plastic cards are much like the category dividers often used in music stores, but they’re specially designed as a marketing tool for hobby stores. Each card features the name of one of our RPG lines printed prominently at the top, and goes on to give basic information on the mechanics and setting of the game, special features that distinguish it from other RPGs, and the most popular and useful supplements available. The dividers promote the sale of backlist items as well as new products, since they help customers identify the titles they need most and remind buyers to keep them in stock. Our dividers can be placed in many ways. These are just a few of the ideas we’ve come up with: •A divider can be placed inside the front cover or behind the newest release in a line if the book is displayed full-face on a tilted backboard or book prop. Since the cards 1 are 11 /2 inches tall, the line’s title will be visible within or in back of the book. When a customer picks the RPG up to page through it, the informational text is uncovered. The card also works as a restocking reminder when the book sells.
