From History To Herstory In today’s lesson, Múinteoir John told us all about some amazing pirates and all of them were women. These strong, powerful and independent women roamed the high seas in search of fortune, freedom, and sometimes . Here are some fierce facts about them. • When Grace O’Malley was told that she could not join the crew on her father’s ship because her long hair would catch in the ship’s ropes, she cut off most of her hair and earned herself the nickname ‘Bald Grace’ or in Irish, ‘Gráinne Mhaol’. • Anne Bonny was another pirate with Irish blood in her and she was known for her “fierce and courageous temper”. She could guzzle rum, curse, use a sword and shoot a pistol as well as any of the pirate men in the crew. • To survive in a man’s world, Mary Read disguised herself as a man and worked in jobs that were only Credit: The O’Brien Press for men at the time. First she was a soldier, then a merchant sailor, then a pirate. • Rachel Wall was a very clever and sneaky American pirate. We’d love to see it! Word Search See if you can find all the words in this Grace O’Malley word search. Hint: The words go up and down, from side to side, and diagonally as well.
