UNIT 3 - REPORT
Basketball basics: - History of basketball: Dr. James Naismith (sport maker in 1891), peach basket, height of the basket (10 feet; 3,05 m). - Basketball rules (regulations): - Team: number of players per team (12), player at the same time on the playground (5). - Playground: - Dimensions: (28 x 15 m). - Lines: Free throw line (key), sideline, base line, midcourt line, three-point line. - Areas: restricted area. - Duration: 4 playing periods (10 minutes), resting periods (2 minutes), halftime (15 minutes). - Baskets: 2 baskets (3,05 m tall), backboard, post, rim and net. - The ball: spherical made of leather, plastic or - Score (points): 3 different scores: field goals (2 or 3 points), free throw (1 point). - Technique: basic ball grabbing, basic position, “triple threat” position, types of bounces (normal, defensive and offensive), types of passes (chest pass, bounce pass, overhead pass and baseball pass), footwork, ways of shooting (free throw, jump shot and lay-up) and block. - Tactic: concept, attack and defense basics, individual defense. - Fouls and violations: shot clock (24 seconds), black court violation (8 seconds), 3 seconds rule (restricted area), out of bounds violation, over and back rule, personal foul, double dribble foul and 3-setp foul or travelling. - Other related vocabulary: mini-basket, to compete, to enforce, to face, to score, to attack, to defend, to cooperate, to respect, bench, referee, mini-basketball, 3x3 game, to pivot, to strike, to commit, to be worth, fingertips, funnel, waiter, pursuit, to move ahead, to prevent, to pressure, to rebound, to arrange, odd, even, fair play, slam dunk, etc. Health and hygiene: - Healthy and unhealthy habits: basketball clothing (sleeveless shirt, shorts and high trainers). Importance of using comfortable clothing when playing basketball to execute the different techniques without problems and to prevent the risk of suffering any lesion (twisted ankle).
