Awards of Distinction Including: HALL OF FAME DISTINGUISHED PLAYER AWARDS ANNUAL AWARDS TEAM OF THE CENTURY TEAM OF THE HQ DECADE HEC CORMIE BURSARY WINNERS Hall of Fame Preamble Introduction The Directors of Hockey Queensland have approved the establishment of a Hall Of Fame to recognise those players (see criteria) who, in the opinion of the Board, have achieved excellence in the sport of hockey and who have therefore brought credit to themselves and to the sport. Selection The selection of those who are to be inducted into the Hall of Fame will be at the sole discretion of the Board upon the recommendation of an Inductions Committee approved by the Hockey Queensland Board of Directors. Presentation Inductees will be presented with a memento to recognise their achievement and their name permanently recorded on public display on the Honour Board especially for this award. Nomination The Induction Committee may, at its absolute discretion, seek and accept nominations from any source including affiliated associations. It may reject any or all nominations if in the opinion of the Committee, none of the nominations are of sufficient merit to justify their induction into the Hall of Fame. The Induction Committee may recommend any number of persons for induction or none in any year. Criteria for Selection In considering the merit or otherwise of persons being considered for induction into the Hall of Fame the Induction Committee will take into consideration the following criteria: Person selected will have achieved fame as a player; it being recognised that persons who render extraordinary services as administrators and officials may be honoured by Life Membership, Distinguished Service Award etc.; The person will have represented Queensland for at least five (5) years and Australia for at least three (3) years and additionally would have expected to have ceased playing in open national competition for at least five years Candidate’s public standing in addition to outstanding service and contribution to the game. -

Media Release from the Australian Football League
MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE The AFL today wrote to all clubs to advise the AFL Commission had approved a change to the 22-match fixture structure whereby each club would now have two byes through the season comprising 22 matches across 25 weeks, starting from next year’s 2014 Toyota AFL Premiership Season. As part of the introduction of a second bye to better manage the workload on players and clubs throughout the year, the premiership season will now commence with a split round across the weekends of March 14-16 and March 21-23 (five matches and four matches respectively on those two weekends). The pre-season period will be revitalised to feature two matches per Club scheduled nationally, with a continued focus on regional areas that don’t normally host premiership matches, as well as matches in metropolitan areas and managing the travel load across all teams. In place of the NAB Cup Grand Final, the AFL is currently considering options for a representative-style game in the final week of the pre-season, together with intra-club matches for all teams, before round one gets underway. AFL General Manager - Broadcasting, Scheduling and Major Projects Simon Lethlean said the first group of club byes were likely to be across rounds 8-10 (three weeks of six matches per round) with the second group of club byes to be placed in the run to the finals in the region of rounds 18-19 (one week of five matches and one week of four matches). All up, clubs would each play 22 games across 25 weeks through March 14-16 (week one of round one) to August 29-31. -

European sports policies of the past decade are characterised by numerous activities and by on-going differentiation. Against this backdrop, the study presents policy options in four key areas: the first covers the need for stronger coordination; the second aims at the setting of thematic priorities; the third addresses the reinforcement of the role of the EP in sport and the fourth stipulates enhanced monitoring. Conclusion and Key Issues
Conclusion and Key Issues port has long played an important social and cultural role in Australia. It provides a form of social glue which binds communities and creates a broader, more unified society. Sport has enriched the Australian language and added to its humour. It has S 1 developed a rich celebrity culture as well as revered sites and traditions. To many, sport is everything. The legendary Liverpool (UK) football manager Bill Shankly once remarked: “Some people think football is a matter of life and death . I can assure them that it is much more serious that that”.2 And in Australia such a sentiment often seems very true. Take, for instance, the most mentioned media items recorded by Media Monitors during 3–9 July 2006: the FIFA World Cup drew 19,330 mentions; the Wimbledon tennis tournament scored 14,648; there were 8,774 mentions about the State of Origin rugby league final; followed by 8,072 mentions regarding North Korea test firing seven long-range missiles which sparked world-wide condemnation. At times, sport can eclipse everything else in this country.3 But why do people choose to participate in one sport over another? The answers to this are as diverse as the number of sporting activities in this country; people’s choices are influenced by their parents, their friends, access and barriers to different sports, cost, physical attributes, and the list goes on. But there is one constant when it comes to sport – if participants find involvement in their sport of choice enjoyable and fulfilling then they will be more likely to continue into their adult lives. -
