HISTORY OF BASKETBALL The inventor of basketball was Dr. James Naismith. He was a physical education teacher who created the game in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891. It was developed as a less injury prone sport than football and it had 13 rules. The original ball was a soccer ball and there was no dribbling.

The objective of the game was to throw the basketball into peach baskets nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony. Every time a point was scored, the game was paused so the janitor could bring out a ladder and retrieve the ball. Later, the bottoms of the fruit baskets were removed, so the ball would pass through it.

The Basketball Hall of Fame is located in Springfield, Massachusetts and is approximately a 12 minute drive to the International Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Basketball became an event for men in the 1936 Summer Olympics and women have been playing since 1976. The next summer Olympics will take place in Tokyo in 2020 and it will include 3-on-3 basketball games for the first time.
