Italy and the Sanusiyya: Negotiating Authority in Colonial Libya, 1911-1931 Eileen Ryan Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 ©2012 Eileen Ryan All rights reserved ABSTRACT Italy and the Sanusiyya: Negotiating Authority in Colonial Libya, 1911-1931 By Eileen Ryan In the first decade of their occupation of the former Ottoman territories of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica in current-day Libya, the Italian colonial administration established a system of indirect rule in the Cyrenaican town of Ajedabiya under the leadership of Idris al-Sanusi, a leading member of the Sufi order of the Sanusiyya and later the first monarch of the independent Kingdom of Libya after the Second World War. Post-colonial historiography of modern Libya depicted the Sanusiyya as nationalist leaders of an anti-colonial rebellion as a source of legitimacy for the Sanusi monarchy. Since Qaddafi’s revolutionary coup in 1969, the Sanusiyya all but disappeared from Libyan historiography as a generation of scholars, eager to fill in the gaps left by the previous myopic focus on Sanusi elites, looked for alternative narratives of resistance to the Italian occupation and alternative origins for the Libyan nation in its colonial and pre-colonial past. Their work contributed to a wider variety of perspectives in our understanding of Libya’s modern history, but the persistent focus on histories of resistance to the Italian occupation has missed an opportunity to explore the ways in which the Italian colonial framework shaped the development of a religious and political authority in Cyrenaica with lasting implications for the Libyan nation. -

Gazella leptoceros belongs to the tribe Antilopini, sub-family Antilopinae, family Bovidae, which comprises about twenty species in genera Gazella , Antilope , Procapra , Antidorcas , Litocranius , and Ammodorcas (O’Reagan, 1984; Corbet and Hill, 1986; Groves, 1988). Genus Gazella comprises one extinct species, and from 10 to 15 surviving species, usually divided into three sub-genera, Nanger , Gazella, and Trachelocele (Corbet, 1978; O’Reagan, 1984; Corbet and Hill, 1986; Groves, 1988). Gazella leptoceros is either included in the sub-genus Gazella (Groves, 1969; O’Reagan, 1984), or considered as forming, along with the Asian gazelle Gazella subgutturosa , the sub-genus Trachelocele (Groves, 1988). Rainfall in the country is scarce and infrequent. Over-exploitation of fossil groundwater resources mostly to meet irrigation demands has already affected the northern aquifers. In this paper, it is adapted the Driving Force-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) of the European Environmental Agency (EEA) model. The DPSIR is used as analytical framework for assessing water issues. This allows a comprehensive assessment of the issues through examination of relevant Driving forces and Pressures on the environment, the consequent State of the environment, its Impact, the Responses undertaken. This assessment is preceded by a short description of geographic location, climate and populations. F. T. BARR, B. R. WALKER 44.4. LATE TERTIARY CHANNEL SYSTEM IN NORTHERN LIBYA AND ITS IMPLICATIONS ON MEDITERRANEAN SEA LEVEL CHANGES F. T. Barr and B. R. Walker, Oasis Oil Company of Libya, Inc., Tripoli, Libya ABSTRACT A large fossil drainage system of probable upper Miocene age is recognized along the northeastern flank of the Sirte Basin, northern Libya. The main channel has been traced for about 150 km eventually being lost under the sarir, just south of Qasr as Sahabi. It has cut into middle Miocene limestone to a depth of over 1300 feet. In this region the surface is near present sea level. It is postulated that the Sahabi drainage system is the result of an abrupt drop in Mediterranean sea level of at least 1300 feet, and probably more than 2000 feet, during the late Miocene. During the early Pliocene, the sea returned to a level about the same as, or a little less than, that just prior to the late Miocene regression. Other possible late Miocene drainage systems have been recorded in eastern Libya and the western Desert of Egypt; these may be related to the same sequence of late Tertiary events that affected a great portion of the eastern Mediterranean region. These Neogene geomorphic features of northeastern Africa, which have long been a perplexing problem, now fit well into an hypothesis which accommodates much of the new data obtained from drilling beneath the floor of the Mediterranean Sea. GeoArabia, Vol. 7, No. 1, 2002 Gulf PetroLink, Bahrain Miocene Dam Formation, Qatar Stratigraphy, micropaleontology, and paleoecology of the Miocene Dam Formation, Qatar Hamad Al-Saad and Mohamed I. Ibrahim University of Qatar ABSTRACT The Miocene carbonate Dam Formation is well exposed in the Jebel Al-Nakhash area of southern Qatar. Three sections were measured in a detailed investigation of the Formation’s stratigraphy, micropaleontology, and paleoecology. This biostratigraphic and paleoecologic study was supported by the analysis of microlithofacies and foraminiferal assemblages. Microfossils are predominantly benthic foraminifera represented by 38 species, many of which are milioline and one is a larger form. A Borelis melo melo Local Range Zone of Early Miocene (Burdigalian) age was recognized. The nature and distribution of the benthic foraminiferal assemblage, in association with lithofacies evidence, indicated a general shoaling-upward trend. The Dam Formation was stratigraphically subdivided into two new formal members. The basal Al-Kharrara Member is made up of limestone, marl, and claystone, and the overlying Al-Nakhash Member is a cyclic assemblage of carbonate, evaporite, and algal stromatolite facies. The lithofacies are grouped into four major types of which limestone, subdivided into six subfacies, is dominant. The Al-Kharrara was interpreted as having been deposited in warm (25°–30°C), clear, shallow waters of the inner neritic zone (0–35 m) that had an elevated salinity (35‰–50‰) and a vegetated substrate. The Al-Nakhash probably formed in an oscillating, very shallow-marine environment (0–10 m deep, including tidal flats), under warm climatic conditions that eventually led to the accumulation of evaporites and algal stromatolites. -

Addax nasomaculatus belongs to the tribe Hippotragini , sub-family Hippotraginae , family Bovidae , which comprises one extinct species, seven surviving species, and two evolutionary distinct subspecies in genera Oryx, Addax and Hippotragus (Simpson, 1945; Murray, 1984; Corbet et Hill, 1986; Wacher, 1988). All hippotraginids are adapted to the exploitation, generally at low density, of difficult, low-productivity habitats (Kingdon, 1982; Murray, 1984; Wacher, 1988; Beudels, 1993). The genus Addax is comprised of a single species, adapted to the desert. 1.2. Nomenclature. 1.2.1. Scientific name. Female Addax.Termit.1998. Niger. Addax nasomaculatus (De Blainville, 1816). Libya: State Collapse Triggers Mass Displacement
30 March 2015 LIBYA State collapse triggers mass displacement The political instability and crimes against humanity that accompanied and followed the uprising which overthrew President Muammar Qadhafi in October 2011 drove tens of thou- sands into displacement. Those perceived to have supported Qadhafi or to have benefited from privileges he dispensed through tribal patronage networks were attacked in retalia- tion. They were often driven out of their cities, unable to return. Some 60,000 IDPs who had fled during the uprising were still living in pro- tracted displacement by February 2015. Caux / June 2011 Following the failure of political processes, Libya’s situation became increasingly anarchic, culminating in the collapse of a fragile central authority and the emergence of two rival centres of power in mid-2014. Against this backdrop, and ensuing infight- ing among myriads of militias, violence increased. There was more than a six-fold rise in the number of IDPs, reaching at least 400,000 by December 2014, some eight per cent of the population. Precise figures are not available given lack of access and on-going pervasive chaos. IDPs’ basic needs for shelter, food and medical services remain grossly unmet. Their physical security has been seriously threatened by indiscriminate shelling, attacks on IDP camps and sieges that have pre- vented them from seeking security. The situation of tens of thousands of displaced migrants who remain trapped in Libya and are particularly vulnerable is a cause for serious concern. State collapse and fragmentation of Libya’s essentially tribal society have hampered an effective national response to displacement and coordination of policies to address IDPs’ needs.
