DIERIKX* M UCH HAS BEEN written about the contents and im- plications of the Chicago Convention and the 1946 Bermuda-I Agreement. Little is known, however, about the process that led up to these major aviation agree- ments. Until recent years, historical research has been hampered by legal restrictions limiting access to govern- ment records. Based on previously unstudied documents, this article discusses the Anglo-American differences un- derlying the Chicago Convention and the Bermuda-I Agreement. I. INTRODUCTION The basic positions held by Great Britain and the United States toward post-war international civil aviation are well known. In popular terminology, the British posi- tion was one of protectionism while the United States sup- ported an open skies approach. These positions stemmed largely from the different aircraft production capability of the United States and Britain in the years following 1941.

More specifically, the Passenger Network activity (Air France and KLM) saw its traffic increase by 2.4%, with a 5.4% increase in connections to North America, while the Transavia low -cost activity increased by 7.6%. For its part, Franco-Netherlands' cargo traffic fell by 3.8% last month on the basis of a 1.4% increase in capacity, resulting in a load factor that fell by 3.1 points to 57%. My comment: Since the beginning of the year, the Air France -KLM group has carried 80 million passengers, up 3.4% compared to the same period in 2018. I note that over these nine months, the load factor of the Franco -Dutch group was 6 points higher than that of the L ufthansa group (88.7% versus 82.8%); a performance to be credited to the combined Air France -KLM teams.

M. Ik ga ze hier niet noemen, omdat ik vrijwel zeker onvolledig zal zijn en tevens onvoldoende bladruimte heb. Maar de Nederlandse luchtvaart en onze K. L. M. zijn wel erg verwant. Het blauwe gevoel kom je overal tegen. Om dat te illustreren hier een zeer persoonlijke bijdrage. Als James gedoopt kwam ik zeventig jaar geleden ter wereld. Zoon van Frans van Beusekom, ingenieur bij de I. E. R. A., de Instrument- en Reparatie Afdeling van de K. L. M. Later verhuisden wij naar Los Angeles waar Lockheed zijn werkgever was. Op de middelbare school zat ik naast een zoon van “Fiets” van Messel, een beroemde vlieger destijds en meesterlijk verteller van vliegervaringen. Ik was graag thuis bij hem. Niet veel later vree ik met de dochter van Jas Moll, ‘in’vlieger bij Fokker, die mij de Rijksluchtvaartschool adviseerde. En zo geschiedde. In mijn loopbaan bij de K. L. M. leerde ik het vak van veel bekende gezagvoerders die nu gepensioneerd zijn en dus lid van de V. G. V. Tijdens onze sociale activiteiten is het een feest om herinneringen op te halen met mijn helden van weleer. En op dit moment zijn er opnamen voor de achtdelige serie “De Vliegende Hollanders”, het verhaal van de jonge Fokker en Plesman, met daarin een kleine rol voor mijn zoon Jasper als B. W. K. De blauwe cirkel is rond.
