Track Report

WEDNESDAY 1st of June. Started to make switch channel cover plates from the 2mm sheet metal plates, made four today. The switch motor for operating the movable ' K ' crossing at No 14 switch would not operate properly it looks like the pilot air valve not working as it should, check again next Saturday. SATURDAY 4th. Checked operation of switch No 14 could not fault , checked limit switches one required slight adjustment. With the availability of 2mm thick sheet steel I made channel covers for all switches as the present ones were being bent, also they were fixed in position by bolts and this did not allow quick and easy access for oiling and cleaning the actuating rods. WEDNESDAY 8th. Did not attend due to the weather. SATURDAY 11th. Completed making covers for all switches and now are all fitted. Transported a ' T ' rail track panel previously made to the Head Shunt. ROLLING STOCK. Checked on work wagon No 4.

8 WEDNESDAY 15th. Checked the operation of switch No14 however the air operating cylin- der for the movable ' K ' crossing not working correctly removed cylin- der for testing. Ray with tractor removed road bed soil for the extension of the Head Shunt tracks. Fishplated the already placed track panel to the already laid track. ROLLING STOCK. Checked club passenger cars No 2 and No 3 , bogies, brakes and wheels all O.K. SATURDAY 18th. Checked operation of air cylinder at home could not fault however when fitted to switch it did not operate without leaking air, so I re- moved the motor and clamped the the switch for the MAIN LINE. Two previously made track panels transported to the Head Shunt added one of these panels the R.H. track by fishplating, still one more panel to add, David helped in this work. Mark fitted flashing to New Container roof to stop rain being blown in under roof sheets. WEDNESDAY 22nd. The second panel butt welded on to the R.H. track this now completes the 7 1/4 gauge Head Shunt track. Made up a track panel for the L.H. Head Shunt track this being fishplated on.

9 SATURDAY 25th. Replaced air motor on switch No 14 but still not right, will check again after the Run Day. Mark dug out more of the road bed for the placement of another two dual gauge track panels, one track panel butt welded on with the next panel still to make. Checked operation of switches and signals, David did this work. SUNDAY 26th. public Run Day The battery driving skeeter signals went down, replaced with small wheel chair battery which lasted all day. WEDNESDAY 29th. The hole in the new container roof sealed by a small square sheet of metal siliconed to the ceiling. Ray purchased a deep cycle battery which was fitted today at Skeeter Junction the reading across the terminals was 12.33 volts. Replaced the air piston motor at switch No 14 controlling the ' K ' crossing movement, this tested to be O.K. Made up one dual gauge track panel. K.W.L. HAMPEL TRACK MANAGER.

10 SATURDAY 2nd of July. Added one metre of air hose to Station supply hose it will now reach all tracks. David checked the operation of switch No 14 O.K. Transported the previously made dual gauge track panel to the Head Shunt, this panel butt welded to the existing panels, this track then lifted aligned and tamped, three trucks of dolo- mite used, both tracks swept with new track Broom. l thank Mark, David and Mike for their help today. WEDNESDAY 6th. Cleaned up two lengths of old rail. Made up one dual gauge track panel. The Signal Gantry foundations were poured. Relocation of fence at ‘T’ Junction pegged out. SATURDAY 9th. Made up one dual gauge track panel and another panel trans- ported to ' T ' JUNCTION , one panel butt welded to the blade- less switch and the other fishplated, the road bed was dug out a little deeper to accept the larger sleepers. Put in fouling peg marker, this indicates a standing room of 20m from fouling peg to dead end on both tracks. Mark and David helped today. WEDNESDAY 13th. Transferred 33 sleepers from treatment bath to draining rack. Made up one dual gauge track panel and transported to ' T ' Junction. Cleaned up two lengths of old rail and made into ' T ' rail. 11 Checked drains, David helped in this work. SATURDAY 16th. Checked several signal bases for water entry, their was none, repainted the signal heads. Checked battery at Skeeter Junction read 14.28 volts their was no load. Cleaned up two more lengths of old rail and made into ‘T’ rail. Two dual gauge track panel made and transported to ' T ' Junc- tion, to complete this section of track a half panel will be required to reach the , David helped in this work. The safety fence was shifted to a new alignment so giving ade- quate clearance for the new parallel track, Peter and his work force carried out this work. WEDNESDAY 20th. All main line and shunting tracks poisoned by David using the Weed Control Spray Wagon. Cleaned up two lengths of old rail and with new rail made one dual gauge track panel, Allan helped in this work. SATURDAY 23rd. Made up one dual gauge track panel and together with a previ- ous made panel transported to ‘T’ Junction. Added three panels to the already laid track , fishplating one butt welding the other. David helped in this work. With the modification l made to the Track Broom I tested it to- day and found it works as planned . WEDNESDAY 27th.

12 Made up 13 . Made a removable Check Guide Rail for the bladeless switch No. 13 this will allow a reverse movement to be made through the switch for the purpose of ballasting. Cut and removed the dual gauge track that was across the cross- ing and on a closer examination found it to be badly bent in several paces, I questioned whether it could be reused. SATURDAY 30th. instead of spending a lot of time refurbishing the above track Mark suggested that we use a length of dual gauge straight track that was removed during relaying as it was found to be in very good condition, the rail ends were cropped and every second tie was cut for reasons, it was the trans- ported to the level crossing put in correct alignment and bolted down to the concrete, the other end butt welded to al- ready laid track, Mark did most of this work. David checked the track switches and signals for correct opera- tion for Sunday Run Day, all O.K. SUNDAY 31st. There were 104 movements. A derailment occurred twice at Station Switch No 4 the cause was difficult to determine however l found that the switch blade was jamming due to lack of lubrication for as a vehicle travelled over the switch it operated with out warning. Oiled switch mechanism no further trouble. K.W.L. HAMPEL TRACK MANAGER.

13 PENFIELD MODEL ENGINEERS NEW HEAD SHUNT TRACKS STANDING TRAIN NOTICE N0 4 - 16' NOTICE TO ALL TRAIN OPERATING STAFF As from SATURDAY 16th JULY 2016 the new HEAD SHUNT tracks will be available for train operations.

24 A trip up north. I recently went for a week long camp at Leigh Creek in the Flin- ders Ranges with my other club, the Ariel Motorcycle Club, yes, I moonlight as a dirt biker, that’s my dark side!

We camped at the Leigh Creek Motorcycle Club motocross track and did day rides from there, this camp was right next to the Leigh Creek railway line but alas, there are no coal any- more, just my luck to camp in the perfect spot and see no trains. I squeezed some railway stuff in during the trip, photo 1 is of an old SAR dog box , this car has been sited beside the Gladstone Rd for as long as I can remember (and longer), you used to be able to see it quite plainly from the Pt Pirie Rd. I haven’t seen it for a number of years and presumed it had been moved or demolished, I recently heard on the grapevine that it was still there but had collapsed so I made this slight detour to check it out, I think it is beyond restoration, I wonder why it was there in the first place?

Most of the week was consumed with bike riding thru some in- accessible but beautiful parts of the Flinders that one normally wouldn’t see. But I did do a sight-seeing trip up to the old Fa- rina township for a look see, for many years Farina was the head of the Great Northern Railway that ultimately reached Alice Springs, it was an important regional centre for stock trains etc even after the railway centre moved on. Of course its impor- tance faded with time and with it the town. For some years now a group of grey nomads have been making a yearly pilgrimage up to Farina and are slowly restoring the town buildings, one stone at a time. The underground bakery has been rebuilt and it is fired up during their July camp each year and fresh bread and buns are baked and sold to the passing trade, a local I was talk- ing to at Lyndhurst commented that the buns were worth the

25 200km drive to get but they had disappointingly sold out on his last trip!

The group have also secured a sheep van, cattle truck and an open wagon from and Steamtown Peterbor- ough, that have been set up on short sections of track with inter- pretive displays describing their use at the sites of the old stock yards and . All very interesting and informative and I have to admire what they are achieving up there, there are no amenities or shops and everything must be carried in so they are very dedicated to their cause.

My week at Leigh Creek came to an end all too soon; my jour- ney home was via my old hometown of Peterborough, the Peter- borough Council has laid pavers engraved with residents names in Jervois St and railway employees have been graced with pavers by the War Memorial in Main St (just by the Yx), I have- n’t seen these yet so I hunted me down in Jervois St and then went looking for Dad in Main St but look who I found first (photo 9)! I did find Dad’s eventually. I went for a tour thru the Steam- town Peterborough Museum as well, nice to see the roundhouse being looked after but it is a shame they can’t fill it with genuine SAR displays, maybe one day, for a start I think they should move the Yx from Main St and put it in the roundhouse as well. And in all that trip I didn’t see a single train – apart from the ones in the roundhouse. And my bike riding? – it was awesome, and yes Peter, real mo- torcycles need front brakes, especially up there on the Flinders Ranges, the last photo is me on Mt Scott with Leigh Creek in the distance,
