Wilson - Typing of Text • West Coast Lumberman Magazine - Statistical Review and Directory - various editions PREFACE In Washington State, only one narrow gauge logging railroad survived long enough to operate during the final yeal's of raill'oad logging el'a the early post WOl'ld Wal' II period despite the effects of the depl'ession, the hazards of wal' time scmp drives and "progress" leading to truck logging. This line owned by Biles-Coleman Lumber Co. of Omak, Washington operated tht'o ugh the late spring of 1948. Although this logging railroad was never officially named, as were some of its contemporaries, and remains little known to this day, it was rather unusual in a num­ ber of opel'ational aspects. Further, this line was equip­ ped with the most modern equipment then available, and it pioneel'ed logging railroad/trucking multi-mode trans­ portation operating concepts which were only to receive wide acceptance following World War II. Selection by Biles-Coleman of the most modern equipment then avail­ able may have provided the inspiration for equipment purchases made by an even more modern, but shorter lived, Washington State/Western Idaho timber salvage line owned by the Diamond Match Company. This line was the most modern 'Vest Coast narrow gauge logging railroad built and will receive passing attention for com­ parison purposes in Appendix II of this book. The following narrative will attempt to provide a compl'ehensive history and description of the Biles­ Coleman Lumber Company logging railroads during their years of operation from 1922 to the end of May 1948. It is not an intention of the author to provide a complete and detailed co rporate history from its beginnings in 1921 to the final disappearance of the Biles-Coleman name in 1974. Necessarily, many aspects of company opera­ tions not directly related to the raih'oad or activities affecting its operation will be touched upon in the follow­ ing text. This book is oriented toward exploring the operations of the railroad and its equipment from the technical, operating, and historical points of view. The omission of facts which might be appropriate from a cor­ porate history standpoin t but which have no relevance to the nal'l'ow gauge will thus be overlooked and hopefully, will be fOl'given by the reader. 11 Chapter 1 A FALTERING START The Omak Fruit Growers Incorporated, operators of Temporarily idled, J. C. Biles soon joined up with the Omak Warehouse and Storage Company, had been Nate Coleman to form the partnership which purchased awarded a Contract by the Bureau of Indian Affairs the Omak Mountain operation.     Welcome to the Dixie Pass, part of the Sumpter Valley Railroad ca. 1890 to 1947 Introduction • The Oregon Lumber Company in agreement with Union Pacific built the Sumpter Valley Railway in 1890 as a way to access rich tracts of timber southwest of Baker City. • The Railway replaced wagons as the primary transportation to McEwan, Sumpter, Whitney, Austin and Bates, Oregon, until the advent of trucking. • In 1987 seven portions of the Railway were listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as the Sumpter Valley Railway Historic District. • One portion, Dixie Pass, the newest addition to the Sumpter Valley Railway, was built ca. 1910 as part of an attempt to finish the Nevada-California-Oregon Railroad. This route was important to John Day Valley ranchers for transportation of their livestock to market. You are following in the footsteps of Sumpter Valley interpretive trail at the Malheur National Forest. First Stop: Sumpter Valley Railway History American Indians first created trails through these mountains hundreds of years ago. Later, in 1825, Hudson-Bay Fur company trappers, lead by Peter Skene Ogden, crossed this very pass. In 1862 more people made this difficult journey by stagecoach and freight wagon in search of gold. Gold prospectors were followed by farmers, ranchers and others. In 1890, David Eccles, a prominent businessman from Utah, helped create the Oregon Lumber Company and plans were set in motion to build a railroad to haul logs to a sawmill in Baker city. The first 22 miles of track ran through the mountains to McEwen. By 1910 the rails were over 80 miles long, reached all the way to Prairie City, and hauled logs, livestock, people, and other freight.

    True Sound Project for Zimo Sounds designed by Heinz Daeppen US Geared in the woods Page 1 01 20140514 Heisler Geared Locomotive Photo © Heinz Däppen Prototype information The Heisler locomotive was the last variant of the three major types of geared steam locomotive, Charles L. Heisler receiving a patent for the design in 1892 following the construction of a prototype in 1891. Somewhat similar to a Climax locomotive, Heisler's design featured two cylinders canted inwards at a 45 degree angle to form a 'vee-twin' arrangement. Power then went to a longitudinal driveshaft that drove the outboard axle on each powered truck. The inboard axle on each truck was then driven from the outboard one by external side (connecting) rods. The Heisler was the fastest of the geared steam locomotive designs, and yet was still claimed by its manufacturer to have the same low speed hauling ability. Heisler's were produced in both two and three truck variants in sizes ranging from 17 tons to 95 tons. Federation in 1901 delivered a national system of railways to Australia but not a national railway system. Thus the so-called “standard” gauge of 4ft. 8½in. had not become the standard in Australia at Federation in 1901, and has still not. It was found that previous studies did not examine cause and effect in the making of rail gauge choices. This study has done so, and found that rail gauge choice decisions in the period 1850 to 1901 were not merely one-off events. Rather, those choices were part of a search over fifty years by government representatives seeking colonial identity/autonomy and/or platforms for election/re-election. Consistent with this interpretation of the history of rail gauge choice in the Australian colonies, no case was found where rail gauge choice was a function of the disciplined search for the best value-for-money option.

    #7 #7 1929 Baldwin Steam Train – History The locomotive, was built in August 1929 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, USA, as per an order from the Campbell River Timber Company. The engine weighs 90 tons and has a wheel arrangement of 2-8-2. (a 2-wheel lead truck, 8 drivers and a 2-wheel trailing truck) and is different than other steam locomotives as it doesn’t carry a tender behind. Instead, the fuel tank is attached to the back of the cab and the water is carried in the saddle tank above the boiler. The purpose of this was to give the driving wheels more weight and traction as the locomotive’s main purpose was for pulling logging trains on steep grades. The engine has a tractive force of 29,100 lbs., burns oil and can carry up to 1800 gallons of water. The locomotive was shipped in 1929 to Campbell River B.C. where it worked for the Campbell River Timber Company. It continued to work for them identifying as #2 along side its sister locomotive #3. Until 1938, when the company went bankrupt due to a forest fire in the area. They were forced to then sell the assets they owned. H R McMillan bought the locomotives and assets and sent both the locomotives to work for the Alberni Pacific Lumber Company (A.P.L.) in Port Alberni, B.C. which H R McMillan had bought in 1936. The goal of the research is to investigate the application of this new type of glued insulated rail joint where the fishplates are manufactured at high pressure, regulated temperature, glass-fiber reinforced polymer composite plastic material. The usage of this kind of glued insulated rail joints is able to eliminate the electric fishplate circuit and early fatigue deflection and it can ensure the isolation of rails’ ends from each other by aspect of electric conductivity.
