New Carmen from Simon Rattle tel 0115 982 7500 fax 0115 982 7020 AUGUST 2012 LIST See inside for valid dates Dear Customer August traditionally being a quiet month for new releases, it is nice to see EMI come up with a bumper crop of great value boxsets, mostly due for release on 20th. Included is a continuation of their ‘Collector’s Edition’ series with a magnificent set devoted to the music of William Walton, alongside an 11CD box grouping together great recordings from Sir Adrian Boult. Ten other EMI ‘Budget Boxes’ have been seen before, but it is difficult to argue with the prices! See page 4 for details. The new Carmen from Sir Simon Rattle also warrants a mention! It is now ten years since Rattle took up the helm with the Berliners and this offering is a wonderful marker of the anniversary, featuring Magdalena Kozena and Jonas Kaufmann. Again from EMI, this can be found on page 4. Moving away from EMI, other highlights this month include a fun looking disc from pianist Benjamin Grosvenor of music by Gershwin, Saint-Saens and Ravel, a boxset of Delius from Heritage Media that includes great recordings from Eric Fenby, the latest Wagner offering from Marek Janowski in Lohengrin, and a brand new recordings of Mahler 1 from Ivan Fischer on Channel Classics that promises to be very special. New special offers this month include Beethoven recordings, Opera recordings, CPO and Supraphon titles and the complete catalogues of Alia Vox, Toccata and Herald. Plenty to whet your appetite! Don’t forget that we have a bank holiday in the UK on Monday 27th August and our offices will be closed accordingly. Best regards as always from, The Europadisc Team DON’T FORGET - UK Carriage is FREE over £35! New Carmen from Simon Rattle £14.95 (2CD) Featuring Magdalena Kozena, Jonas Kaufmann, Genia Kuhmeier, Kostas Smoriginas and the Berliner Philharmoniker.

As a pupil of Josef Hoffman and a representative of an older school that believed in impromptu changes to one’s performance approach, Cherkassky rode for 70 years on a wing and a prayer, while Fricsay came from the school of rehearse-exactly-as-you-play. Moreover, Cherkassky’s rhythmic and emotional freedom also seemed at odds with Fricsay’s insistence on written tempos and rhythms. The reason Deutsche Grammophon didn’t release the 1951 recording of the Tchaikovsky appears to be that someone at the label was disappointed by the sound of the orchestra.

Dear Customer, As summer gives way to autumn (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), the record labels start rolling out their big guns in the run-up to the festive season. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba. Meanwhile Hyperion bring out another volume (no.79!) of their Romantic Piano Concerto series, more Machaut from the wonderful Orlando Consort (see our cover picture), and Brahms songs from soprano Harriet Burns. Another Hyperion Brahms release features as our 'Disc of the Month': the Violin Sonatas in a superb new recording from star team Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien (see below).

  • Jordi Savall Talks About Grief, Memory and Building Bridges
To marry the heart and the head By Julius Purcell . May 12, 2012 1:23 am The prolific Catalan musician Jordi Savall talks about grief, memory and building bridges ©Laia Abrill Jordi Savall at home in Barcelona It was a sound that few who heard it are likely to forget. In January, the church of Santa María del Mar in Barcelona was packed for the memorial concert of the singer Montserrat Figueras, who died last year aged 69. At the front, seated at the viola da gamba, Figueras’s husband Jordi Savall waited motionless as Armenian duduks launched into an opening lament. Then, from a balcony lit by three candles, came the voice of Figueras herself – “smoky, penetrating, flatly expressive”, as the music writer Alex Ross has described it. What we were hearing was one of her recordings of the Chant of the Sybil, a medieval Catalan text that she particularly loved. It was a charged moment, tinged with the realisation that recordings might endure, but the chance to hear this voice in performance had gone for ever. When I meet Jordi Savall a few months later, he is in the middle of producing a new disc that will tell the story, in music, of the humanist thinker Erasmus. The recording session in a chapel had finished at six that morning, Savall having returned only two days ago from an exhausting tour of Mexico and China with Hespèrion XXI, the ensemble he co-founded with Figueras in 1974. Six months after his wife’s death, and having turned 70 last year, Savall won’t, or can’t, slow down.
