About this Release

Pascal Dusapin has composed a number of works for the stage, one of the more recent being the opera Penthesilea, after the play by Heinrich von Kleist. From the opera he has also fashioned Wenn Du dem Wind…, the concert suite which opens this disc. Although beginning and ending with a single line from a solo harp, throughout its course takes the listener through the extremes of love, war and the demands of inflexible laws. Dusapin’s catalogue of works also includes several concertos, including Aufgang and À quia for violin and piano respectively. Soloists on this recording are Natascha Petrinsky, who sang the role of Penthesilea at the première production of the opera, and Carolin Widmann and Nicolas Hodges, both highly respected interpreters in the field of contemporary music. They are supported by l’Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire and Pascal Rophé, a team well acquainted with the composer and his music: Dusapin and Rophé have collaborated since the early 1990’s and during 2014 – 16 he was the orchestra’s composer-in-residence.

Sonatas

About this Release

As Jacob Kellermann points out in the liner notes to this disc, there is an unbroken tradition of performing arrangements of Franz Schubert’s music on the guitar. Schubert himself composed very little for the instrument, and there are doubts regarding Schubert’s own skills on the instrument. Nevertheless it is well known that the guitar was in fashion with the middle-class Viennese among which Schubert and his circle of friends moved. In his notes, Kellermann argues that elements of the light, melody-driven and carefree musical style favoured in that environment and present in stylized form in much of Schubert’s music is the very aspect that makes it so inviting to play on the guitar. DuoKeMi was formed by Kellermann and Daniel Migdal in 2006, and the two are constantly aiming to expand the repertoire for their combination of instruments. This has resulted in a number of commissions as well as new transcriptions, often by Kellermann himself as in the case of the much-loved Arpeggione Sonata recorded here.

Fratres

Jörgen van Rijen, Camerata RCO

About this Release

Sensing a special relationship between Arvo Pärt and J.S. Bach, Jörgen van Rijen on his first recording for BIS brings together music by the two composers. Pärt has readily admitted to his love for the work of Bach, referring to it in titles such as Collage über BACH, but also by using the motif BACH (B flat-A-C-B). In addition, both composers share a fascination for religion, while at the same time composing music that is almost mathematically constructed, possessing an underlying order that forms the basis of its timelessness. In collaboration with the composer, van Rijen has adapted four works by Pärt for the trombone, including the celebrated piece Fratres, which exists in numerous versions, as well as the two religiously themed An den Wassern zu Babel … and Vater unser. Pärt’s open-minded attitude to adaptations of his works is also something he has in common with Bach, who regularly reused his own compositions, rearranging them for new occasions. Bach also ‘borrowed’ from other composers, and the three concertos heard here are all arrangements for solo organ of works by Italian composers, which van Rijen in his turn has arranged for trombone and strings.

Mantra

About this Release

On this disc, the Trondheim Sinfonietta, founded in 1998, has gathered four works from the three decades encompassing the ensemble’s existence. All four seem to be haunted by an even deeper past: Bent Sørensen’s Minnelieder is the composer’s third version of a work originally sparked-off by a book about the 14th century, while Toshio Hosokawa’s Drawing, from a decade later, was inspired by the very start of life. Kristin Norderval’s Chapel Meditation began its existence as an improvisation, but looks back to music from centuries earlier, while the most recent work, Mantra by Ellen Lindquist, also mines a venerable musical tradition, that of the age-old Indonesian gamelan orchestra that for over 100 years has had an influence on Western composers such as Debussy, Britten, Steve Reich et al. Set for varying forces and numbers of performers, the four works together form a fascinating picture of the kaleidoscopic possibilities open to composers around the turn of the millennium.

Spring Will Come: Choral Rarities from the Grand Duchy of Finland

About this Release

On this programme of choral works, Nils Schweckendiek and his Helsinki Chamber Choir guide us through some 80 years of Finnish music for choir, from the period when the country formed part of the Russian Empire, as the Grand Duchy of Finland. It was during this time that a Finnish nationalist movement began to take form, in opposition towards the political and cultural dominance of Russia and Sweden respectively. This development can be traced in the way the idea of Spring – a staple in the songs of the Nordic countries – changes from a sense of joy at the end to the hardships of winter to a metaphor for liberation from political oppression. Another result was the Fennicization towards the end of the 19th century, during which many popular Swedish and German- language songs were translated into Finnish and the originals in effect suppressed – a case in point being the earliest piece on the disc, F. A. Ehrström’s Svanen (The Swan, 1833), which has had its original Swedish text restored for this recording.

About this Release

Columbus: Dramatic Cantata for Soloists, Male Choir, Mixed Choir, and Full Orchestra, Op. 11, which celebrated its premiere at the Graz Music Society Concert Hall on 4 December 1870, is an extraordinary work within Heinrich von Herzogenberg’s oeuvre as a whole and differs greatly from many other compositions by him. After the successful premiere a review appeared in the Grazer Tagespost that is all the more interesting insofar as it was penned by Friedrich Hausegger, a member of the so-called ‘progressive camp’. If we think merely of Herzogenberg as the Brahms emulator of his middle and later creative phases, then Hausegger’s words correct our one-sided picture of the composer: ‘We were most pleasantly surprised by his Columbus. With it the composer proved not only that he can assemble little elements, perhaps ones formed in imitation, to produce a well-formed whole but also that he can draw on impressive resources, that he is able to master a significant subject with a bold and sure hand’.

About this Release

For the second Graupner-focused release from the Kirchheimer BachConsort, the ensemble perform solo and dialogue cantatas by this exceptional composer. With his inexhaustible imagination he was able to create cantatas rich in contrasts and with variability, originality, diversified instrumentation, opulence, and drama. The interplay of the vocal and instrumental parts is also a special feature of his music. In the introduction to his Hymnbook published in 1728 Graupner emphasized what in his view was the most important task facing a composer: ‘Edifying words in a song make an even deeper impression on human hearts when the meaning and message of the text, as it were, are vividly presented through the music with carefully considered and select expressions. And this is the noblest thing in every composition in which specific texts and words are prescribed’. In his cantatas Graupner succeeded in employing purposeful musical affections to illustrate and represent the texts. For him there was no difference between secular and sacred music; he knew how to engage in skillful negotiations between these two genres.

About this Release

Woldemar Bargiel was Clara Schumann’s half-brother and Robert Schumann’s brother-in-law. In the nineteenth century hardly any references failed to note these relational circumstances, surely more to Bargiel’s disadvantage since it for many years led to his relegation to the ‘second ranks’. It is only recently that the study of his private papers, which somehow miraculously managed to survive two world wars, has inspired increasing interest in his oeuvre. His papers include manuscripts as well as more than 1,500 letters demonstrating that he was a sought-after personality in the European music world. Moreover, in 2010 Dean Cáceres published a study based on analytic methods laying the foundation for what is an impressive demonstration of Bargiel’s personal style – which the Orpheus Quartet now thoroughly confirms on its complete recording of the composer’s string chamber music.

Moralische Cantaten

The Hamburger Ratsmusik – an ensemble looking back on a five-hundred-year history – teams up with the young countertenor Benno Schachtner on this recording of Georg Philipp Telemann’s Six Moral Cantatas. Moral lessons from Telemann? Not at all! During the decades between 1720 and 1750 the middle class of the early Enlightenment sought moral education and ethical improvement deriving from human nature and reason as part of its never-ending quest for earthly happiness. It was with wit and charm that in his Moral Cantatas of 1735 Telemann set to music a poetic document conveying the spirit of this Enlightenment period. His only recently rediscovered Fantasies for Solo Viola da Gamba, published at the same time, are presented here in alternation with his Moral Cantatas, the title with which they were announced in a catalogue dating from August 1735. These two collections were first performed together during a concert by the Hamburger Ratsmusik at the last Telemann Festival are now being presented here for the first time on CD.

Following the release of ‘Mandolino e Violino in Italia’ cpo are now releasing ‘Mandolino e Fortepiano’ with the acclaimed mandolin virtuoso Anna Torge, who ‘inspires fascination above all with her surprisingly cantabile, most finely articulated, melodically and harmonically intelligent playing, as is extremely rarely the case on a plucked instrument’ Neue Musikzeitung, June 2018. A mandolin with four courses is used for the selection of works heard on this CD. The elegant and sensitive sound of the instrument was produced with gut, copper, and silver-plated strings plucked with a quill or plectrum made of bark. In 1804 Johann Nepomuk Hummel composed his festive and graceful Grand Sonata, which today may be regarded as the last great work of what is known as the classical zenith of the mandolin. The Sonata by Gabriele Leone will transport listeners to the sound world of the gallant, sensitive style and demonstrate the highly developed performance artistry of this period.

Vol. 3 of cpo’s recording of the string quartets of Ferdinand Ries with the Schuppanzigh Quartet presents selected works underscoring his great importance as a composer! His String Quintet No. 2 received virtually hymnic praise in the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung in 1817: it was ‘in every respect one of the most outstanding works by this composer; in fact it even ranks with the most outstanding works of all that have come out in this genre for a number of years’. In this work Ries apparently hit on the blend of traditional and innovative elements corresponding to the expectations of discriminating listeners from his times. In his Quartet No. 5 Ries creates the impression both of greater delight in experimentation and concision as far as the formal and motivic- thematic design of the work is concerned and proves to be a master in the field of formal experiments. The Schuppanzigh Quartet, which with the performance of interesting new discoveries has earned a reputation as one of the leading string quartets playing on original instruments, interprets these individual and suspenseful quartets, once again ‘with a lot of élan and dedication’ - FonoForum, writing about Vol. 1.

Boris Papandopulo: his name sounds Greek, and yet he has to be regarded as the most important Croatian composer of the twentieth century. cpo’s third release featuring this uncommonly versatile composer presents his Concertos for Piccolo and Harpsichord. As in many of his concertos for solo instruments and orchestra, here too Papandopulo draws on Baroque sources in his Harpsichord Concerto. The three characteristic movements follow the model fast-slow-fast in their sequence. In the introductory cantata the composer incorporates dodecaphonic features into the musical structure in a most highly individual and original manner in order then to blend them with compositional-technical elements of the Baroque. He employed the piccolo in many ways his works. It usually enabled him to evoke nature through musical means – the country idyll, the sounds of shepherd’s pipes and birdcalls, and the stylized folk dance. Such a sunny, idyllic and Arcadian atmosphere also radiates throughout the Prelude with its stylized birdsong forming the beginning of the Little Concerto. His orchestral songs round off the CD.

Berliner Saxophon Quartett

In this release from the Berlin Saxophone Quartet we encounter Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Art of Fugue, the ‘summit of abstract, architectonic compositional artistry’ (Edwin Fischer), in an unusual and unexpectedly fascinating form. The listener has the opportunity to judge for themselves just how suitable the saxophone or the members of the large saxophone family (the soprano, tenor, alto, and baritone saxophones) are for the presentation of Bach’s visionary music. However, the reviews of the CD version of this release indicate that this interpretation is very much a success. For example, on 15 April 1993 the Rheinische Post wrote, ‘Those who have had the chance to hear the marvellous Berlin Saxophone Quartet perform Bach’s Art of Fugue immediately dismissed any reservations they may have had about this curious instrumentation. The ensemble performs with such agile skill and tonal beauty that our impression is that old master Bach has granted his consent from Elysium.’ Fanfare wrote: ‘Excellent, sensitive musicians. A marvellously recorded performance with transparency and delight in detail’.

The research on the musical cultures of faraway countries left its mark on Poul Rovsing Olsen’s (1922-82) oeuvre. He aimed at clarity and substance, and by fusing elements from the Occidental and Oriental traditions he developed a personal musical idiom that was unusual in Danish music. Poul Rovsing Olsen himself said that it was his dream ‘to make music as direct as possible, to bring it closer to the listener’. This CD features his last composition A Dream in Violet and four world premiere recordings of his music for voice and instruments, including The Planets, based on a block book from the 15th century.

About this Release

Art Blakey had just turned thirty-nine. He was ‘Bu’ to those who knew that late in the 1940s he had taken the name of Abdullah Ibn Buhaina. In 1954, he had co-founded the Jazz Messengers with pianist Horace Silver, but now he led the quintet single-handedly, identifying the most outstanding talents, mentoring them, taking them to the top. The group of course continued to expand until late in the 1980s to include other artists – as talented as they were diverse – such as Wayne Shorter, Clifford Brown, the Marsalis brothers and Keith Jarrett. But already in 1958, the ensemble was inspired, imbued with confidence, crowned with success, and most importantly, original. Pianist Bobby Timmons had just composed the emblematic ‘Moanin’ and saxophonist Benny Golson, his famous ‘Along Came Betty’, songs that the Jazz Messengers interspersed with the compositions of their illustrious fellow musicians: Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.

Melodiya presents a unique live recording of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades. This is a concert performance that took place at the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in December 1989 and featured the Moscow debut of Dmitri Hvorostovsky. ‘…The power of talent and beauty, nobility and sincerity, the power of fate and destiny made Dmitri Hvorostovsky a close person to millions of people worldwide, not only to opera aficionados’, said opera director Dmitri Bertman about Hvorostovsky. This performance of The Queen of Spades also features Irina Arkhipova, a prominent Russian singer of the second half of the twentieth century, Vitaly Tarashchenko, one of the best Hermanns of the 1980’s and 1990’s, and Alexander Vedernikov, the Bolshoi’s celebrated bass. The Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Yurlov Republican Academic Choral Capella are conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev. The live recording of the concert performance of Tchaikovsky’s opera is officially released by Melodiya on CD for the first time in three decades.

Melodiya and the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory present the first release from the large-scale project Anthology of Contemporary Choral Music by Russian Composers performed by the Chamber Choir of the Moscow State Conservatory. This unique choir was established in the mid-1990s as a choral laboratory of modern music. The MSC Chamber Choir led by the outstanding choirmaster Boris Tevlin was distinguished by its diversity of programmes that comprised holy canticles to spirituals, bright theatrics of its performing style and supreme professional mastery. However, modern music has always been the choir’s particular focus of attention. The choir has numerous domestic and international premieres to its name. In addition, the MSC Chamber Choir is a regular participant of musical festivals and dedicated to composers of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Schwarzenberg Schubertiade can look back on more than forty years of music-making history, making it one of the oldest Lieder festivals. In the true spirit of its co-founders Hermann Prey and Gerd Nachbauer, the music of Franz Schubert is the central focus of interest, and this is reflected in the frequent airing of works by composers who followed Schubert and continued his Lieder legacy. One of the foremost composers of Lieder after Schubert was undoubtedly Robert Schumann, whom Elisabeth Kulman, possibly todayʼs best mezzo soprano, placed at the heart of her Schubertiade Lieder recital on August 26, 2017. Together with her outstanding accompanist Eduard Kutrowatz she performed a very personal selection of Schumann Lieder which included both the well known standard songs as well as rarities in the repertoire. In the second half of her recital, Kulman contrasted some of the best known Schubert Lieder with songs by Herwig Reiters, who is currently deemed one of the leading composers of Lieder.

This unique performance of Haydnʼs biblical oratorio Il ritorno di Tobia, which is so rarely heard, is thanks to an unusual gift: the orchestra La Scintilla, which was founded as an ‘original sound’ ensemble comprising musicians from the Zurich opera orchestra, and which awarded Nikolaus Harnoncourt honorary membership. The honour included the opportunity for Harnoncourt to choose a piece of music which he could then perform with the orchestra in an ideal atmosphere. Harnoncourt surprised everyone by choosing Haydnʼs virtually unknown oratorio based on the apocryphal Bible story of Tobias (Tobit), who goes on an adventurous journey with the angel Raphael in order to heal his blind father with the angelʼs help. In keeping with the spirit of the subject matter, the proceeds of the concert were given to a charity supporting war victims of Sarajevo. The work was performed under Harnoncourtʼs direction with an ideal line-up of soloists (Ann Hallenberg, Valentina Farcas, Mauro Peter, Sen Guo and Ruben Drole) and the magnificent Arnold Schoenberg Choir at a 2013 Salzburg Festival concert in the Felsenreitschule.

Wolfgang Sawallisch is known throughout the world as a paragon among his generation of conductors and musicians. After a thorough music education and a firm grounding in the art of conducting he soon began to assume more elevated positions in the music scene. The extent of his success in the 1950s was so great and indeed so rapid that by 1957 he was given the privilege of conducting at Bayreuth, and it comes as no surprise that Birgit Nilsson in her memoires gushes on the topic of the ‘35-year-old Sawallisch’: ‘What talent, what a gifted man!’ The Orfeo catalogue contains several digital studio recordings of symphonic repertoire by Bruckner, Pfitzner and Weber as well as the Brahms Requiem, which are now released as a tribute to Sawallisch to mark his 95th anniversary year.

Brahms probably heard most of these tunes as a child growing up in Hamburg, played by the Gypsy orchestras that were famous for their ‘Hungarian’ dance tunes. But his hand is evident in the lush harmonies and emotional depth. This version for violin and piano was arranged by Brahms’ friend Joseph Joachim, the greatest violinist of his generation. The six quartets of Opus 50 by Joseph Haydn are among the most important works in the string quartet genre – that chamber music formation so highly valued since the era of the First Viennese School, allowing only masters of the composer’s art to express themselves. Haydn’s so-called “Prussian Quartets” (Hob. III: 44-49) of 1787 were dedicated to the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II, an enthusiastic amateur cellist. Here, he developed the classical style of music-making, which he had shaped so decisively himself, even further. Starting with a rather simple theme, the motifs are artfully wrought – especially in the opening movement of the quartets – and it is notable that all four instrument are treated as near-equals.

About this Release

Born in Paris on November 5, 1928 young Devy was soon recognized as an outstanding talented prodigy. Erlih’s family made it through the WWII German Occupation and after the war Erlih continued his studies. He won the coveted Paris conservatoire Premier Prix and his career as a violin soloist began. In 1955 Erlih won the International Long-Thibaud competition and subsequently toured throughout Europe, America and Japan. In addition to his vast standard classical repertoire, he became a champion of contemporary composers including Bartók, Jolivet, Dutilleux, Martinü, Milhaud, Sauguet, Maderna, Ropartz, Tomasi, Jacque Charpentier, Denisov, Julien Falk, Paul Le Flem and Loucheur. Many composers wrote concertos or sonatas for him. He combined the raw gipsy music styles of his Balkan heritage with the refined elegance of the French violin school and his recordings are highly sought after by collectors. Erlih was also a noted teacher and was on staff at the Paris Conservatoire. In 2010 he was the president of the Jury in the Long-Thibaud competition. Devy Erlih died in Paris in a road accident on February 7, 2012.

Inspired by the work of painter Artemisia Gentileschi (Rome 1593–Naples ca. 1656), this release aims to explore features of both paintings and music of the early Italian Baroque, highlighting their creative features and their emotional foundations. Daughter of Orazio Gentileschi (one of the first Italian Caravaggesque painters) Artemisia was, until a few decades ago, remembered chiefly for the scandal of the rape trial she brought against Agostino Tassi, one of her father’s artistic partners, who abused her when she was 17. She had to wait over 300 years to see her value as a painter fully recognised. The music is performed by Accademia d’Arcadia, an ensemble comprising 13 musicians playing period instruments and a singer. About this Release

Luigi Moretti was a nobleman, scholar, music teacher and composer. His principal works were written for the guitar, although he also produced remarkable compositions for the voice and for piano. He was one of the finest members of the splendid group of Italian proponents of guitar music during the first quarter of the 19th century, whose works inexplicably fell into oblivion. Thanks to the talent and pioneering spirit of Marcello Fantoni, Dynamic is proud to fill that void with these world premiere recordings of Moretti’s works. They reveal the expert hand of an up-to-date and cosmopolitan composer, and feature the remarkable interpretative skills of a young and talented guitarist.

When in March 2018 the first bars of Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ was recorded, this was not the everyday life of musicians who fulfilled their daily tasks, but the birth of a new body of sound: the KlangKollektiv Wien. Under the baton of Rémy Ballot, musicians from Vienna’s leading orchestras gathered to celebrate the music of Viennese Classicism and collectively rediscover it. In order to take into account the unique sound culture of this young ensemble, the producers of this recording at Gramola insisted on using even the highest quality analog recording device. In each bar of the Symphony No. 1 D 82 and the ‘Unfinished’, the consonant love of music is felt, with which the KlangKollektiv Vienna embarks on its self-imposed mission.

Art is communication. When I write music, I aim for it to be heard and understood’. In 1968, with these words, the Hungarian-born composer Iván Eröd renounced an umcompromising avant-garde and therefore a restriction to new compositional techniques such as serial music or dodecaphony. Eröd’s works also clearly show a processing of these and more tonal trends, which are wonderfully combined with influences by Béla Bartok or Johannes Brahms. The Accord Quartet from Budapest breathes the spirit of this diversified music and presents three string quartets by Iván Eröd on their debut CD.

About this Release

OM ON - the title of the new release is equally cryptic and associative, even musical. Its two syllables are both opposing and attracting through their similarity. The name of the piece is therefore also a metaphor for the two musicians who interact while remaining distinctly individual. It is also a homage to the two guitarists Tom Pauwels and Yaron Deutsch whose names are behind the two syllables. While ON is (as the opposite of OFF) a state of sound, OM stands for something important in Billone’s music: the sphere of ritual, particularly in Hinduism and Buddhism.

About this Release

Strauss’s early horn concerto Op. 11, which he intended to be accompanied by either orchestra or piano, is far more than a mere audition piece. Strauss’s first biographer Max Steinitzer described op. 11 as ‘beautiful in its form’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘appetising’, making special reference to the lyrical sentiment and song-like nature of the thematic and motivic progressions, which eclipse the actual development of such themes. The 2018 / 2019 season is Christian Thielemann’s seventh as Principal Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden. Following engagements at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in Gelsenkirchen, Karlsruhe, Hanover and Dusseldorf, in 1988 he moved to Nuremberg to occupy the post of General Music Director. Christian Thielemann has contributed to the birthday celebrations for Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss with numerous Staatskapelle concerts in the Semperoper and on tour. His programmes have also featured a wide range of music from Bach to Henze, Rihm and Gubaidulina.

About this Release

Kirill Petrovich Kondrashin was born in Moscow on March 6, 1914, just before the fateful start of the First Word War. Little Kirill grew up in a musical family: his Jewish mother was a violinist from Riga, his father played the viola. The boy’s piano lessons began at an early age. We know little of the family’s fortunes in the period after the Bolshevik Revolution, but the teenage Kondrashin was able to study music theory with Nikolay Zhilyoyev (1881-1938).The Russian composer, musicologist and educator had learnt his trade from Mikhail Ippolitov- Ivanov (1859-1935) and Sergey Taneyev (1856-1915) and was a strong formative influence on his talented pupil. This is Kondrashin’s laconic summing-up of his “art of conducting”: ‘Ultimately conducting is simply about making one’s own intentions intelligible to a hundred musicians and letting them play their part in them’. How much tragedy, drama, joy or fulfilment lay behind that aspiration was known only to Kirill Kondrashin himself.

About this Release

Born in Elberfeld, now part of the city of Wuppertal, in 1888, Knappertsbusch was Music Director at the city’s opera house before he went, via Leipzig and Dessau, to Munich, where he eventually succeeded Bruno Walter as General Music Director. He was no fan of the Nazi regime, however, and so he left Munich and went to Vienna to conduct the Philharmonic and opera, returning eventually to Munich, where he died in 1965, after conducting his last Bayreuth Parsifal the previous year.

A unique document of contemporary Dresden history lies safely preserved in the Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv: the recording of the Daphne premiere of 1950, also planned as a tribute ‘In Memoriam Richard Strauss’ for that friend and champion of the Dresden Staatskapelle and Staatsoper, who had died the previous year. The presence of this buried treasure was ample cause for celebration - until we listened to the recording. We originally considered the surviving Daphne tapes as unfit for release on account of its recording quality and acoustics, far removed from the sound ideal to which we had hitherto aspired.

‘It has been my great pleasure to work as Composer in Residence for The Norrbotten Big Band this year. During four visits to Luleå I have brought in new music and we have rehearsed, experimented, tried out and tested ideas, gotten to know each other. For me it has been a fantastic experience, a process that has enriched me in various ways as a composer and musician. Apart from having gained experience and learned various technical skills, the most surprising thing I discovered was that it could be a challenge to get the individual musician to take off the ‘big band hat’ which they usually take on when they sit down in a big band. While there is a use or these ‘hats’ or for ‘standard big band musician practices’; I find that in creative music, there is easily room for more individual responsibility and approach. I have tried to make room for that, and it is my hope that a little bit of this shines through in the music we are presenting on this CD release’.

For ten years, the mystery play Ordo virtutum by Hildegard of Bingen has been an important component in the repertoire of the women’s schola Ars Choralis Coeln. Under the artistic direction of Maria Jonas, the ensemble has occupied itself intensively with the interpretation and realization of the work. After diagnosis of the texts and in-depth studies, Maria Jonas translated the title of the work as ‘Order of the Powers’. In the recording by Ars Choralis Coeln, Diabolus (the devil) does not have a voice, but plays recorder – performed here by Lucia Mense, who developed medieval playing techniques as well as contemporary sounds and noises for her role. The Canadian singer, hurdy-gurdy and recorder player Tobie Miller is recognized today as an outstanding virtuoso on the baroque hurdy-gurdy, and performs in a number of ensemble formations, including in duo with the Austrian hurdy-gurdy player Matthias Loibner, but also with well-known conductors such as Jordi Savall, Christophe Coin, and Wieland Kuijken. In 2017, together with Ensemble Danguy, she released on the Ricercar label the highly acclaimed CD La Belle Vielleuse, featuring eighteenth-century hurdy-gurdy sonatas. Johann Sebastian Bach’s music has been a leitmotiv in Tobie Miller’s musical life, which is why it was her big dream to adapt his wonderful solo works for the hurdy-gurdy. If Bach knew this instrument, it was most probably as a peasant’s or beggar’s instrument. However, during his lifetime, the hurdy-gurdy was a favourite instrument of the French upper classes.

Erinnerungsspuren by Alberto Posadas is a homage to the piano in six parts. In his ‘reminiscences’, the Spanish composer brings to mind some of the best in his profession, taking them as sources for his studies of the piano’s sound space. From François Couperin to Robert Schumann and Claude Debussy to Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Karlheinz Stockhausen. What matters to Posadas in his cycle is not to make explicit connections to the past; he rather discerns concepts from historical repertoire, namely Erinnerungsspuren [memory traces], that find expression in pianistic experiments. Special playing techniques with the pedals and preparations inside the piano allow changes of individual sounds and micro-intervals while they are resounding, thus creating a trans- historical sound space. In his cycle Alberto Posadas gives less answers than he raises questions in which the music of his six predecessors can be heard as sounds of remembrance: How can new and old material put each other in a different light and perhaps even redefine themselves? And what can be the meaning of quotations when it comes to building bridges between old and new, between the known and the unknown?

About this Release

When the First World War broke out in 1914, the music world did not remain unaffected. Artists inevitably became involved, either as soldiers at the front or as composers of patriotic music or musical memorials to a lost world. The three-part documentary series investigates the (un)known, overt and hidden connections between music, power, war and revolution. Beginning with what led to this great human tragedy, each episode addresses different perspectives of the relationship between music and politics. While Parts One and Two explore both the hopeful and subsequently tragic entanglements of art and politics to which so many artists fell victim during the First World War and the October Revolution, Part Three embarks on a search for the political aspects of music up to this day.

The gala concert features a kaleidoscopic array of artists and ensembles from the worlds of classical music, film, and Broadway. The entire first half of the program is dedicated to selections from such brilliant Bernstein works as Candide, West Side Story, Mass, and Serenade. Music from the classical canon very dear to Bernstein’s heart includes Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn, the finale of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony and music by Aaron Copland, plus a new work by John Williams.
