Preface In September 1998, I was commissioned by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to carry out a preliminary study looking into Norway’s role in the Middle East. According to the agreement with the Ministry, the study should focus on the years prior to 1993 and examine whether Norway’s political past in the Middle East – and, not least, the mediating and confidence-building efforts of Norwegians prior to the opening of the secret Oslo Back Channel – had had any influence on the process that followed. The study should also try to answer the question ‘Why Norway?’ – that is, what had made Norway, of all countries, suitable for such an extraordinary task? The work on the study started on 15 September 1998. The date of submission was stipulated as 15 April 2000. This was achieved. The following report is based on recently declassified and partly still classified documents (to which I was granted access) at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the verbatim records of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, records of government proceedings and the Norwegian Parliament, Labour Party Archives, documents from the US State Department and the Socialist International – to mention the most important.

Nyt fra køkkenet LEDEREN HAR ORDET God jul, og godt nytt år! En hektisk førjulstid markerer begynnelsen på slutten av et svært hektisk år. Snart senker roen seg, høytiden og roen erstatter jaget og maset, og det blir litt tid til ettertanke. Gid vi hadde mer av dette i hverdagen! For 2008 har, for svært mange av oss, vært uvanlig krevende og hektisk. Midt i en stadig travlere hverdag med stadig økende ”produksjonspress” skal vi også finne tid og energi til å håndtere akselererende endringsprosesser, som legger premissene for fag og yrkesutøvelse i tiår fremover. Legeforeningen har lang tradisjon for engasjerte anestesileger i sentrale posisjoner, og så også nå med for eksempel Ylf-leder og regionstillitsvalgt i Helse Sør-Øst. I tillegg har selvfølgelig også NAF, med utvalg og underutvalg og representanter i utallige møter og komiteer, engasjert seg aktivt i disse prosessene. Mange av dere har gjort en stor innsats; deltatt i og øvet reell innflytelse på de prosessene som nå pågår. Kollegiet skylder dere en stor takk, alle sammen! Årets høstmøte førte også til endringer. Etter noen industrifrie år vedtok NAFs årsmøte, med stort flertall, at man ønsker utstyrsutstillerne velkommen tilbake. Vi er et fag der teknikk og utstyr har en sentral plass, de fleste av oss har begrenset tid vi kan sette av til møter og kongresser, og når vi først er der ønsker vi å eksponeres også for denne siden av faget.
