Those of our participants who were in Bad Boll in 1961 or1962 had worked on the Second-Level Area Studies Report, investigating the everydaylife of a cross section of the population of a fairly restricted area,traveling no further than Stuttgart, Sindelfingen, Geislingen, orGiippingen. For the third level, we felt, this was not enough. The third-level participants were to be a much morehighly selected group, and wewanted to attempt to give them at least an impression,if not a complete understanding, of Germany as a whole.We wanted to try to find out inwhich direction Germany is moving, to see if wecould not get an inkling of what Germany might be like three, five,ten years hence, and we wanted to know how this new
