20 July, 1991. Dear Mr North,

Thankyou f:th'replying to my enquiry in the GRD re "Pioneers of Wyalong - Pre 1920".

The centenary of Wyalong will be celebrated from 20-27 March, 1994. The Pioneer Centenary Committee decided that the Pioneers of the town and district should be commemorated in some way. I was asked to convene a Committee to research the pioneers and hopefully produce a book in time for the centenary. What started out to be a fairly simple task - or so we thought - has become quite a large project.

I live in West Wyalong most of the time, but have been spending about two weeks avery month in Sydney in order to research old newspapers and any other records that I may be able to find. My address with the Society of Australian Genealogists and the GRD is Rose Bay so rather than cause confusion I left my Wyalong enquiry replies to come to this address.

The obituary noti~ of Michael and Anthony Conway are enclosed. These have~put on to the word processor, but you may be able to add a little more. For example the names of Michael's widow and children and who did the children marry? Also years of birth, deaths and marriages if you have them. Who did Anthony's sons marry?

Did the brothers really come to Australia twenty years apart?

The death dates in the Cemetery Record Book are different to those I've given but I would be prepared to believe the dates in the obituary notices rather than the family's memory when having the headstones erected.

I am enclosing a copy of our Pioneer History Sheet, in case you did not pick one up at the Museum. You may care to fill one in for each family and return them to me.

Two streets in Wya10ng (Top Town) are called North and Conway Streets - presumably called after your families. Can you verify this?

I am enclosing some draft biographies to give you an idea. We also hope to include photos.

Ilook forward to receiving your History Sheets and short biographies.

Good luck with your researches,

Yours sincerely,

Convener, Pioneer Book Committee. b. France. d. 2 March, 1906 aged 78 years from cyanide poisoning.

Wyalong Advocate, March , 1906.

CONWAY: ANTHONY JAMES.

b. Dublin, Ireland. d. 24 November, 1918 aged 83 years. He came to Australia 60 years ago and had resided in Albury, Wagga and Wyalong. Coming to this field at its inception, he followed mining pursuits, at which he was very successful. He and his sons discovered the Shamrock mine, which they worked for a considerable time and from which they won a great amount of gold. Mr Conway purchased and donated the bell for St Mary's Church, West Wyalong in October, 1895. The bell weighed 2~ cwt and cost £30 ($60) in Sydney. His wife Bridget died on 9 September, 1904. His brother michael died October, 1918. Children: William (Central Wyalong); Charles and Martin (Sydney); Margaret (Mrs H. Burrows, West Wyalong).

Wyalong Advocate, November 1, 1918.

COOK: JOHN JAKES.

b. d. 14 November, 1907 aged 57 years. He had been a fine worker for the town, a good energetic friend to its institutions. He was with the young people in their sports and pastimes - with the more staid and serious in the task of forwarding the interests of the town - and with all ages and sections in the cause of charity. He was the proprietor of the Metropolitan Hotel. As an indication of Mr Cook's value 'as a citizen, the list of positions occupied by him were: President, Football Club; President, Bicycle Club; Vice-President, PAH and I Association; Treasurer, School of Arts; Vice-President, Rifle Cub; Member of Town Progress ...... ---.. Committee; and a prominent honorary member of the Manchester Unity Order of OddfellowSi and the Grand United Order of Oddfellows. It is with deep regret that we have to report the death of Mr Michael Conway the sad event taking place at 5.30 on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased who was 86 years of age had been ailing for some time, went off rather suddenly, having been partaking of a cup od tea at the tim of his demise. The late Mr Conway was a native of Ireland, coming out to Australia about 40 years ago. He resides in the Wagga dldtrlct until the outbreak of this field, when he came here accompanied by his sons and followed mining pursuits for many years.

The deceased leaves a widow and six children, three sons and three daughters. Mr Anthony James Conway who has been seriously ill for the past few days is a brother of the deceased.

Dear Mr North, 20 July, 1991.

Thankyou fDr replying to my enquiry in the GRD re "Pioneers of Wyalong - Pre 1920".

What started out to be a fairly simple task _ or so we thought - has become quite a large project.

I live in West Wyalong most of the time, but have been spending about two weeks every month in Sydney in order to research old newspapers and any other records that I may be able to find.

Who did Anthony's sons marry?

apart?Did the brothers really come to Australia twenty years

The death dates in the Cemetery Record Book are those I've given but I would be prepared to different to dates in the obituary notices rather than believe the memory when having the headstones erected. the family's

I am enclosing a copy of our Pioneer History Sheet, in case you did not pick one up at the Museum. You may care to fill one in for each family and return them to me.

Two streets in Wyalong (Top Town) are called North and Conway Streets - presumably called after your families. Can you verify this?

I am enClosing some draft biographies to give you an idea. We also hope to include photos.

Ilook forward to receiving your History Sheets and short biographies.

Good luck with your researches, Yours sincerely,
