Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 30, 2017 Page 3 From Our Pastor

I have been asked numerous times over the last few months: “When are you leaving?” So far my response has been, “for vacation or for sabbatical?” Maybe this will clarify. First things first. I took the last two weeks of June off and took a motorcycle trip with a brother to Wyoming…through the Tetons and Yellowstone National Park. This is a magnificent part of our country. I have shared a couple of stories in my homilies since I returned. My basic motto is, “the only reason to come home is to plan the next one!” So, when are you leaving? I am taking the week of July 24-28 and August 21-25. No grand plans. I do plan on getting in a little more training for the upcoming sabbatical.

The sabbatical is the “Big Time Away”. I was ordained 38 years this past June and I have never had a sabbatical. A brother approached me about “Walking the Camino”. The route chosen starts in Southern France and makes its way approximately 492 miles to Santiago de Compostela, located in the northwest corner of Spain. My response? “Let’s go”. Thousands of pilgrims have walked these routes through the centuries. From July 1991 to July 2001, I was Pas- tor at Santiago de Compostela Parish in Lake Forest. While there, a group of us took a tour across Spain, ending in Santiago de Compostela. We encountered a number of pilgrims along the way. Walking the “Camino” has been a thought in the back of my mind since.

Well now the “Thought” has been placed in the forefront. I am taking a sabbatical from September to mid-December. I will be on the “Camino” for 2 months (September & October). I am arranging some plans to spend time in Jerusalem for November and looking to finish the time away with a week in Hawaii. The total time away is September 4th to December 18th, about three and a half months.

While I am on Sabbatical, Fr. Dick Delahunty will be here at St. Catherine of Siena. Fr. Dick retired last year. His last assignment was St. Nicholas Parish in Laguna Woods.

September still seems like a ways away, but, as we all experience, time can pass quickly. I ask for your thoughts and prayers while I am away (for both vaca- tion and sabbatical). Even as I carry my belongings in a backpack along the Camino, hoping to keep it to about 25 pounds, I will carry you with me. AMEN.
