Corrected draft May 2004 CORROBOREE MODERNE ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dressed in a brown wool bodystocking specially made by Jantzen and brown face paint, an American dancer, Beth Dean played the young boy initiate in the ballet CORROBOREE at a Gala performance before Queen Elizabeth 11 and Prince Phillip on Feb 4 1954 . “On stage she seems to exude some of the primitive passion of the savage whose rites she presents” (1a) “If appropriations do have a general character, it is surely that of unstable duality. In some proportion, they always combine taking and acknowledgment, appropriation and homage, a critique of colonial exclusions, and collusion in imbalanced exchange. What the problem demands is therefore not an endorsement or rejection of primitivism in principle, but an exploration of how particular works were motivated and assessed.” (1) CORROBOREE "announced its modernity as loudly as its Australian origins…all around the world" (2) 1: (BE ABORIGINAL !) (3) - DANCE A CORROBOREE! The 1950s in the Northern Territory represents simultaneously the high point of corroboree and its vanishing point. At the very moment one of the most significant cultural exchanges of the decade was registered in Australian Society at large, the term corroboree became increasingly so associated with kitsch and the inauthentic it was erased as a useful descriptor, only to be reclaimed almost fifty years later. Corroboree became the bastard notion par excellence imbued with “in- authenticity.” It was such a popularly known term, that it stood as a generic brand for anything dinky-di Australian. (4) Corroboree came to be read as code for tourist trash culture corrupted by white man influence. -

It also provides the accompanying teacher background information for each of the elaborations from Years 7 -10 to support secondary teachers in planning and teaching the science curriculum. The Australian Curriculum has a three-dimensional structure encompassing disciplinary knowledge, skills and understandings; general capabilities; and cross-curriculum priorities. It is designed to meet the needs of students by delivering a relevant, contemporary and engaging curriculum that builds on the educational goals of the Melbourne Declaration. -

In the pajJcrs previously published in the Society's journal I have conclusively proved, and it can now be con- si.Iered as an established fact, that the stone relics of the Aborigines represent implements only, and not weapons. This is a fact of the greatest importance, and its signifi- cance will only be fully realised when we apply it to the study of archaeolithic man in Europe- The Tasmanian Aborigines had made at least one great invention, viz.. they had discovered that a certain kind of rock yielded sharp- edged flakes when broken. (1). They also found that these sharp-edged flakes could be used for most of the re- quirements of their simple life. But here again we come upon one of those curious psychological pi'oblems that are so difiicult to explain. The Aborigines had undoubtedly discovered that these flakes were excellent cutting imple- ments, as thev have generally a fine edge, and often enough terminated in a sharp ])oint To us it seems easy enough to turn the good qualitie.s of the sharp flakes to other uses than merely as tools. The instinct of self-presei-A'ation is paramount in all hviman beings, and. as has often been stated, it is the mother of all those inventions that have changed the life of our prehistoric ancestors into that of modem mankind. -

The political and cultural themes of dispossession and cultural divides are as relevant now as the time in which they were written. Students will examine two different styles of poetry, their structure, style and historical context; from their understanding of contemporary issues they will create texts, design visual elements of story, research local history and create biographical articles. A variety of texts are available as resources including radio interview, historical archives, poetry websites and youtube clips. Included are poetry analysis worksheets, vocabulary activities and suggested summative and formative assessment. Traditional Wiradjuri Culture By Paul greenwood I would like to acknowledge the Wiradjuir Elders, past and present, and thank those who have assisted with the writing of this book. A basic resource for schools made possible by the assistance of many people. Though the book is intended to provide information on Wiradjuri culture much of the information is generic to Aboriginal culture. Some sections may contain information or pictures from outside the Wiradjuri Nation. Traditional Wiradjuri Culture Wiradjuri Country There were many thousands of people who spoke the Wiradjuri language, making it the largest nation in NSW. The Wiradjuri people occupied a large part of central NSW. The southern border was the Murray River from Albury upstream towards Tumbarumba area. From here the border went north along the edges of the mountains, past Tumut and Gundagai to Lithgow. The territory continued up to Dubbo, then west across the plains to the Willandra creek near Mossgiel. The Booligal swamps are near the western border and down to Hay. From Hay the territory extended across the Riverina plains passing the Jerilderie area to Albury. Wiradjuri lands were known as the land of three rivers; Murrumbidgee (Known by its traditional Wiradjuri name) Gulari (Lachlan) Womboy (Macquarie) Note: The Murrumbidgee is the only river to still be known as its Aboriginal name The exact border is not known and some of the territories overlapped with neighbouring groups. Places like Lake Urana were probably a shared resource as was the Murray River. The territory covers hills in the east, river floodplains, grasslands and mallee country in the west. -

At this time, Melbourne Water has three operational regions – Maribyrnong, Yarra and South East. 1995 The Victorian Government split Melbourne’s water industry into three retail water businesses (City West Water, Yarra Valley Water and South East Water). Melbourne Water was established as the wholesale water business and Melbourne Parks and Waterways (the predecessor to Parks Victoria) was set up to manage parks. Melbourne Water retains responsibility for the collection, storage and wholesaling of water and for the treatment and disposal of sewage, as well as responsibility for regional drainage and waterways within the Melbourne Water operational boundary. -

Well here it is. At last the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Thesaurus, is ready. However, although this edition is ready, I foresee that there will be a need for another and another, because language is fluid and will change over time. As one of the compilers of the thesaurus I am glad it is finally completed and available for use. -

How Warumungu people express new concepts Jane Simpson Tennant Creek 16/10/85 [This paper appeared in a lamentedly defunct journal: Simpson, Jane. 1985. How Warumungu people express new concepts. Language in Central Australia 4:12-25.] I. Introduction Warumungu is a language spoken around Tennant Creek (1). It is spoken at Rockhampton Downs and Alroy Downs in the east, as far north as Elliott, and as far south as Ali Curung. Neighbouring languages include Alyawarra, Kaytej, Jingili, Mudbura, Wakaya, Wampaya, Warlmanpa and Warlpiri. In the past, many of these groups met together for ceremonies and trade. There were also marriages between people of different language groups. People were promised to 'close family' from close countries. Many children would grow up with parents who could speak different languages. This still happens, and therefore many people are multi-lingual - they speak several languages. This often results in multi-lingual conversation. Sometimes one person will carry on their side of the conversation in Warumungu, while the other person talks only in Warlmanpa. Other times a person will use English, Warumungu, Alyawarra, Warlmanpa, and Warlpiri in a conversation, especially if different people take part in it. The close contact between speakers of different languages shows in shared words. For example, many words for family-terms are shared by different languages. As Valda Napururla Shannon points out, Eastern Warlpiri ("wakirti" Warlpiri (1)) shares words with its neighbours, Warumungu and Warlmanpa, while Western Warlpiri shares words with its neighbours. Pintupi, Gurindji, Anmatyerre etc. In Eastern Warlpiri, Warlmanpa and Warumungu the word "kangkuya" is used for 'father's father' (or 'father's father's brother' or 'father's father's sister').
