Pidgeons of Cotleigh, Devon Pidgeons Appear to Have Lived at Cotleigh from the End of the 16 Th Century Until the End of the 18 Th Century

PIDGEONs of Cotleigh, Devon Pidgeons appear to have lived at Cotleigh from the end of the 16 th century until the end of the 18 th century. A Devon Muster Roll of 1569 lists 7 able-bodied men at Sidbury, but none at Cotleigh. It is probable, therefore, that the Pidgeons of Cotleigh came from Sidbury. Two wills of John Pidgeons, proved in 1606 and 1613, show that these men (probably father and son) were living at Cotleigh at the turn of the 16th century. Unfortunately, the existing parish records of Cotleigh start only in 1653, and only a few bishop’s transcripts exist from before this date, so there are many gaps in the early records. And the early records of Sidbury were lost in a fire at the vicarage in 1850. Consequently, some of the earlier relationships of this tree are based on conjecture, but are shown in order to illustrate how the Pidgeons of Cotleigh may have developed. Where a marriage is shown in red as m? it is not certain that the person baptised was the same person who married. Some of the assumptions are supported by evidence from wills, and others by DNA. Descendants of these Cotleigh Pidgeons who moved away from the village can be found on the following trees, with two possibilities for the branch to Axminster: Branscombe & Sidbury Axminster (one possibility) Cullompton Thorncombe Taunton & Cardiff Honiton (William) Marlborough Axminster (another possibility) Awliscombe Note: ab. = about, b. = born, bp. = baptised, bu. = buried, d. = died, m. = married, (+) = extra-marital relationship
