An entry of well over five hundred store cattle saw several consignments of top quality suckler and dairy bred cattle mostly drawn by our first Spring Show and Sale of Continental bred cattle. Steers topped at a massive £1330, firstly for Andrew & George Palk of Paignton with an eye catching pen of three strong Simmental’s (22m) followed by the better of a cracking run of Limousin bullocks (23m) from Farmer Luxton of Okehampton which also rose to £1330 piece. A cracking bunch of five Blonde’s (23m) from Brian Davis of Liskeard were judged to be best steers in the show before going on to make a decent £1270 a head. A group of five South Devon steers (23m) from Simon Booty of Poundsgate drew £1230 apiece whilst Salers (22m) from Russell Boundy of Winkleigh quickly sold to £1190. Hereford steers (28m) from Russell & Alyson Retter of Cotleigh reached £1140 as did British Blue’s from Both EC Stanbury & Son of Inwardleigh and Ruby Ventures of Newton Abbot. Store heifers saw a high of £1170 given for a super bunch of Blonde heifers (24m) from Brian Davis again with slightly younger Blondes off the same farm to £1100 and even later ones to £925 from Martin Curtis of Plymouth (and given the prize for best store heifers in the show). Limousin females (22m) reached £1135 for four shapely ones from Brian Vallance of Bickington with others to £1025 for Mark Risdon of Broadwoodkelly whilst British Blue heifers (30m) ran to £1070 for a couple from Russell & Alyson Retter and four good Blue’s (24m) fetched £990 a head for Gary Dunn of Okehampton. A couple of smart South Devon’s (24m) easily made £1055 for Simon Booty with Hereford bred types (24m) reaching £1045 for Gordon White of Coleford. 186 STIRKS & SUCKLED CALVES Auctioneer: Ian Caunter 07813 068935 Tighter numbers on the week met with another pleasing trade throughout with well-bred dairy types in particular looking a tremendous trade. Malcolm Harris up from Slapton presented Limousin cross steers (9m) with the best topping at £760 with others off the same good farm to £690 x2. Ron Wonnacott & Sons across from Chagford topped at £720 for Charolais cross steers (9m), the same figure achieved by Andrew Barker of Dunsford this time showing Limousin cross steers with others of the same good home to £640. SJ Hatherley & K Rendle up from Plymouth presented further Charolais cross steers (9m) which levelled out at £650. Another good run from Paul Brimacombe & Family down from Yeoford saw the best of the Angus steers (11m) top at £640 with others to £635, Tony & Jean Tall of Modbury achieved £630 for similar goods. Heifers topped at £650 for Charolais crosses again from Ron Wonnacott & Sons, Andrew Barker saw Limousin cross heifers reach £620 whilst another good show from Paul Brimacombe & Family saw the best of the Blue heifers top at £615 (11m) with Angus heifers to £595 and £570, all of a similar age. Simon Jervis of Ideford sold a bunch of Limousin cross heifers which levelled out at £615, whilst South Devon heifers from Campbell & Jackie Hill of Liskeard achieved £565. A pleasing trade with a good crowd of buyers, numbers needed to continue on the momentum. 62 CALVES – 10.15 AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935 A much smaller entry of calves sold to a cracking CALVES trade! A strong 270kg cull boar from Wessex Pork, of Taunton fetched £178. A strong 156kg butchers pig from Andrew Freemantle drew £130 whilst the best of a team of twenty three from Andrew Gabriel of Wellington saw £127 (105kg). Store Pigs Just a few youngstock on offer with a pen of five neat gilt pigs realising £33 apiece for JW Lightfoot all the way down from Gloucester whilst five stores from Nicola Knight of Winkleigh eased to £25 a life. All tidy lambs generally £18 to £28 whilst younger or smaller sorts traded from £8 to £17 with a few lesser end selling below that to give an overall average of £16. 998 STORE HOGGS A rather disappointing number, but what a trade with fresh faces from away trying to source hoggs from Exeter and anything with strength looked dearer on the week. Best hoggs nearly always three figures with David & Lynda Pellow exhibiting their usual large framed Suffolk crosses and claiming £121, £110, £108 & £107.50 for penful’s followed by Norman Dalgarno of Truro with ram hoggs at £116 & £105. Other forward sorts to £110.50 for Mark & Rita Dunn of Cornworthy, £110 for Marlon Warren of Whitestone, £109.50 for Peter Tucker of High Bickington and £108 for Dennis Tapp of Rackenford. Medium keep hoggs usually in the £90’s with a few late £80’s and longer term hoggs from £65 upwards. Hill bred or indifferently bred things from £45 to £65 with no more customers for these as the season draws on. The real plain or those sold with a fault on realisation and not helping the average which was £2 better at £84. 85 GRAZING EWES & RAMS Grazers were a flyer and peaked at £130 for a super Suffolk cross ewes from C Kay of Bovey Tracey, £123 for T Herbert of Tideford Cross and £120 for the best from Duchy College of Stoke Climsland. Majority of others from £85 to £110 and only the real lean sorts less than that. 84 IN-LAMB EWES & EWE HOGGS In-lambers peaked at £120 & £110 for NC Mule ewe hoggs from Tony England of Tiverton whilst Exmoor Mule ewe hoggs sold to £90 for JD Cornelius of Bodmin. 177 EWES & 276 LAMBS (453 LIVES) 177 Ewes with 276 Lambs were overall a better trade with more buyers forward, including some that were willing to buy couples to house, which was needed given the quality forward. A stand out consignment from Brian Trant of Dittisham topped the sale with a pen of flock aged Dorset doubles with strong lambs selling to £245 (£81.66/life) whilst his strong singles on first time lambing ewes rose to £180 (£90/life). More doubles at £195 for Suffolk crosses with strength from JJ Cleave & Son of Folly Gate and £190 for youthful continental sorts from AG Hinks & Sons of Gillingham. Too Many to mention then around the £180 mark, perhaps not the trade of a few weeks ago, but then these lambs aren’t going to hit the early trade like those sold back then.

  • Civilian Evacuation to Devon in the Second World War
VOLUME 2 OF 2 CIVILIAN EVACUATION TO DEVON IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR Submitted by S.J. HESS as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History, 2006 CHAPTER SEVEN The ‘slum mentality’ of the evacuee – the myth challenged This Chapter firstly assesses Devon’s pre-war school medical service. Discussion then focuses on four crucial health issues which became problematic during evacuation, namely dirty habits, pediculosis (head lice), enuresis (bedwetting) and skin infections. The development of hostels for evacuees deemed unsuitable for billeting on arrival is also discussed. These health issues generated much adverse publicity, particularly during the first evacuation wave, and led to the persistent myth that evacuees were dirty, ill-trained and that they introduced pediculosis and skin infections into reception areas. Local documentary archive material is used to examine Devon’s experience and support the argument that generalised and exaggerated adverse publicity fostered a false stereotype. The largest number of evacuee children came to Devon in 1940 at a time when medical checks were improved, both in evacuation and reception areas. In addition the County already had an established degree of pediculosis and skin infections before evacuation. No evidence of a public or official outcry has been found locally to compare with reports emanating from some reception areas, particularly those areas receiving children from northern evacuation areas such as Merseyside.1 This variance with the ‘received’ version of events highlights the importance of local research. 1 The percentage of Merseyside children suffering from pediculosis, who were evacuated to areas such as Herefordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire, was between 22-50% compared with children from London where the percentage ranged from 8-35%.
