I n the present Vo lume a r e printed the Registers of seven Devonshire parishes , and the Editor hopes that now a series for Devonshire has been commenced all the Parish Registers of the County may be included in it . In the neighbouring counties much progress has been made in this direction in the . last few years , and we may anticipat—e equal interest will be taken in the work of pre m serving through the means of the Press - t he ancient Parish . 8 Registers of this County In Cornwall upwards of 5 , and in Somerset 79 Marriage Registers have been printed , while m 6 in the Dorset series , much ore recently commenced , 3 Registers have already been rendered available by publication , and it is hoped that no t less rapid progress will be eff ected in Devonshire . 1 3 7 9 " The contents of the present olume show how needful it is that steps should be taken to print our Parish Registers and place them beyond risk of destruction . Of the seven ' a Uficulme a parishes included , only th t of possesses Register going back to the earliest period of r 538 ; five do not com mence until the seventeenth century and one not till 1 752 . It will thus be seen how great has been the amount of parish records that have perished , ; but placed thus in print as in this volume the contents of Registers are safe from loss or destruction . The Editor desires to tender thanks to the Rev . R . D . Cooke , Rev . G . W . F . Fagan , Rev . F . Thomas , Rev. T . Taylor , Rev . W . Oldham and the Rev . T . W . Howard for their valuable help in transcribing the Registers . It has not been thought needful to print the entries verbatim . They are reduced to a common form , and the following contractions have been freely used = = o i mi: a r s o f . w wido w r o r i o . h . e w d w . p p i = in h o n o f = co t e c . s 3 i n s e o r sin e wo man . p t r gl u ty ‘ = di in t he io ce se o f . = o i ma n . o b achelo r r s n e . b . gl d = h ic ar r ia e i ce ce . l . m da ug te r . g l n The reader must bear in mind that these transcripts are “ not legal evidence, and that for certificates the clergy in charge of the Registers must be applied to . The Editor again desires to impress upon the reader the fact that it is only volunteer assistance that renders the issue of these Registers possible . He will gladly welcome further help in the work of tra nscription in any part of the County . P H ILL IMOR E . W P W . 1 2 Chan cer L a n e 4 , y , J ul) "I 909 ° ¢o n t ent a H Y A S. PARIS . REPORT BY MRS S SQUIRE, PARISH CLERK, ON ATTENDANCE AT A MEETING ON THURSDAY, 20 AUGUST 2015 AT THE GUILDHALL, BARNSTAPLE ORGANISED BY BARNSTAPLE TOWN COUNCIL TO LOOK AT POSSIBLE WAYS OF MANAGING GRASS AND VERGE CUTTING DUE TO A REDUCTION IN THIS CARRIED OUT BY DEVON COUNTY COUNCIL. Mr Will Austin, Barnstaple Town Clerk introduced himself and said that the invitation to the Meeting had been extended to all Parish and Town Clerk’s in the North Devon Council area. Five Clerks were present, representing South Molton Town Council, Braunton Parish Council, Fremington Parish Council, Mr T Squire representing Atherington, Bishops Tawton, Bratton Fleming, East & West Buckland and Goodleigh Parish Councils and myself representing Ashford, Berrynarbor, Chulmleigh, East Worlington, Georgeham, Horwood Lovacott and Newton Tracey, Kentisbury & Trentishoe and Romansleigh Parish Councils. A Councillor from Ilfracombe and a Councillor from North Molton were also there. Mr Austin explained that DCC had agreed to hand over verge maintenance in Barnstaple to the Town Council. Barnstaple has a sponsorship scheme in place with DCC which allowed businesses, community groups and individuals to take on green and planted areas. The relevant Licence is obtained and no fee is charged. 21 areas are sponsored in this way, some of which have a sponsorship sign. In connection with the sign, I asked about planning permission which was acknowledged as necessary. Barnstaple Town Council organise this on behalf of the people who have sponsored the particular area as it would be advertising the company or group. Disposal of green waste was discussed at length. Mr Austin advised that North Devon Council charge £50 per van load of green waste to dispose of this which is the responsibility of DCC.
