JRN CONNECTION February 2011 Vol. 14, No. 2 8 Phony Phone Calls The Great White Way Allen Underwood A scam that has been around for years was just brought to my attention by Rhonda Bishop, RGM in Atoka, TN. She said she had recently received perhaps 13 calls from the Relay system. That is a system set up by the US Disabilities Act where a deaf person can use a TTY (teletype) machine to communicate with a Relay operator who will then make a call and speak for him or her to a third party. In this case, Rhonda was getting calls to put in big orders and charge them to a credit card. Rhonda had worked for Relay in the past and became suspicious on the first call. Relay operators are not allowed to interrupt the call, and the Relay system is not allowed to keep records, so it is often used by scam artists or by someone just pulling a prank. When Rhonda called me I had not heard of this before, but a quick check on the internet showed that it is widespread and has been going on for some time. The usual way Relay is used for a crime is the caller uses a stolen credit card number to make an order and get cash back over the amount purchased, and have that money wired to an accomplice. Fortunately, JRN has a Chadwick Moore, son of JRN Human rule against cash back on credit cards, but beware of this. If you get one of these calls, Resources Workers Compensation please let me know so we can tell how Coordinator, Martha Sellers, lives in New widespread this is for us.
