Ronald Reagan Boulevard Algebra I students finished a rigorous year with units on Statistics Longwood, FL 32750 and Function Analysis, while Geometry students concluded Issue #3 with Circles and Spatial Reasoning. Both courses ended strong with a comprehensive review for the EOC. Algebra II students concluded the year with a Statistics / Probability unit that included students designing and conduction their own survey of students at Lyman and analyzing the data collected to support suggested changes to Lyman's policies and practices. Then we took a quick peek into Trigonometric concepts with a Unit Circle and Trig Functions, before wrapping up the year with a comprehensive Function Analysis project. As we wind down the year, please be aware that there are summer assignments for Algebra 2 Honors, PreCalculus, and AP Calculus. The details for the assignments are on the Lyman HS website. These assignments are designed to be worked on for approximately 5-10 minutes each week and are due within the first few weeks of school. We hope everyone has a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing you next year! Mu Alpha Theta wrapped up a successful year, winning multiple trophies at various competitions, and even had one student earn a scholarship for leadership and excellent participation over his four years in the Honor Society. We will be heavily recruiting new members next year and invite anyone interested in math games and competitions to check us at our first meeting in August.

Social Studies Department As we go into the summer, AP Human Geography is preparing to welcome the incoming freshmen class into Lyman High School. We will be doing a two-day workshop, June 17-18 from 8:00-12:00. This workshop is not required but highly recommend as we will be teaching students key study skills for the courses they will encounter in high school. Students will learn note-taking skills and how they can best study for their classes. If you would like to register your future AP Human Geography student, please contact Mrs. Suzanne Skipper or Ms. Brittany Stone for more information. If you are preparing to take AP Human Geography there is no homework over the summer for the course. The Social Studies department would like to take a moment to congratulate the two teams that traveled to Tallahassee this year for the History Fair. Lyman High School had two groups represent the school, one project was an exhibit and the other group created a documentary that was presented. These students worked on these projects throughout the year and received many notable mentions at the county history fair. Congratulations Lyman History club, we are proud of you. If you have a student that is interested in becoming a member of the history club please contact one of the sponsors for more information, Mr. Timothy Donohue, Mr. Bradford Barsalou, or Ms. Brittany Stone.

Your Lyman School Counseling Team English Language Arts & Reading Departments The English Language Arts and Reading Departments at Lyman support summer reading. This allows our students to start the school year with their best foot forward. Research supports the many advantages of reading articles and books that reflect a passion or excite the imagination. Even stronger research encourages reading books that prompt viewing the world in different ways. Summer loss for all students is estimated to be equal to about 1 month of learning (Cooper 1996). We do not want to see this happen at Lyman. Therefore, students are strongly recommended to acquire a summer reading novel and utilize the provided resources. These are designed to get students’ thinking and help them recall information, thoughts and questions while they read. The suggested books are listed below and can also be found on Lyman’s home website at http://lyman.scps.k12.fl.us/Home/QuickLinks/2019-Summer-Assignments. AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE AP ENGLISH LITERATURE • A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini • The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver Academy of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership 5/17/19 The 4th quarter has brought many hands on experiences for the Level 1 Teaching Academy students! Students have been learning about employee skills and what it means to be “professional” in the workplace. They have created resumes and participated in mock interviews with Ms. Cumbie, Assistant Principal, for future educational teaching positions. Students learned about the evaluation procedures for teachers and the instructional design components that can help students to learn. Working in pairs, students constructed lessons that showcased a particular design question component and presented these to the class. For example, one student used a Kahoot to help students see how “academic games” can help students be engaged in the learning process. The Levels 2, 3, & 4 students also had the opportunity to conduct mock interviews with Mr. Rice, Principal. Students provided Mr. Rice with an updated resume and answered questions. This was done in front of the class providing students insights into the types of questions that could be asked in interviews. After each student, the pros and cons of their responses were discussed. What an awesome practice opportunity! This semester these upper level students completed their dual enrollment courses through Seminole State College. The Level 2 & 3 students’ course focused on the use of Technology for the educator. The Level 4 students developed their teaching portfolios. All levels of academy students continue to have opportunities to observe and assist in classrooms here at Lyman High School. The Academy of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership at Lyman is going to dissolve beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. Students wishing to pursue a career in the field of education have the option of taking Dual Enrollment education courses at Seminole State College. If you are interested in participating in Dual Enrollment classes offered at Seminole State College related to the Teaching Program, we invite students to meet with their school counselor to determine if this path is the right fit for them. There are GPA and test score criteria needed to qualify for Dual Enrollment that counselors are able to review. Career and Technical Education AUTOMOTIVE Recently the Advanced Class of the Lyman Automotive Program went to visit the Seminole State Automotive Program. The students were taken through several different workshop demonstrations so that they could see some of the latest technology that is being diagnosed on vehicles today. They were able to see Active Controls that allows a Technician to use a computer to operate different systems in the vehicle to be able to diagnosis a vehicle without running the engine. Also a Picoscope (a fancy Oscilloscope) that allows the user to view real time signals and pressures inside the engine and operating systems of a vehicle. One of the demonstrations that they enjoyed the most was being able to view an Air Conditioning System that had some acrylic tubes in the system so that they could see the refrigerant change from a liquid to a gas as it moved between the different components in the system. The students were told about the Automotive Program at Seminole State College. It is a two year program that not only includes labs and on the job training but some academic classes at the College. When students complete the two year program they end up with a degree from the State of Florida that they can build upon to eventually get a Bachelor of Science/Arts in Business Economics at the University of Central Florida. Overall, the Lyman Students had a great day at Seminole State College and are looking forward to the future. Lyman High School Non-Profit Organization 865 S.
