State of the club – from the GM’s office!
First and foremost, we would like to thank you for your continued membership, participation and good will that you provide at the clubs. It truly is a pleasure to have such a great membership!
It has been a great start to the 2019 season and the year is flying by already. With great HLMGA and HLLG events to date such as Member-Member at Legacy and Ladies Member Guest, playing both Heathrow and Legacy it has been an exciting start to the tournament season. The spring time is such a fantastic time at the clubs with Club Championship (Heathrow Men’s and Women’s), the dual course combined Men’s Member Guest, Easter Brunch and Easter Egg Hunt, Spring Fling in late April and gearing up for summer time at the pool (Go Stingrays!). So, we are very busy and enthusiastic heading through the first quarter of the year and building momentum for the remainder.
There are many great initiatives we have been working on to kick off 2019 and assess any way we can improve the club for the membership. A big part of that has been a focus on fitness, wellness and needed upgrades to our Racquet Club. We have installed a new classroom area, dou- bled our fitness classes and have made facility changes to accommodate many more pieces of new equipment that will be delivered in April, including spin bikes to execute spin classes, for example. Our fitness launch party was fantastic in January with 250 members attending. We will host additional wellness classes for nutrition, fitness and health as the year continues. Dining nights have also been a big focus and especially in adding themed nights at Legacy on Tuesday and Wednesday weekly. Taco Tuesdays with the Mariachi band have been a huge hit. Smokehouse Night has been consistently well received and the addition of a Surf n Turf night on the last Wednesday of the month has been great. Brunch on Sunday has been fantastic as the 1st quarter of the year has progressed. Heathrow Trivia Night remains strong and the Grand Buffet on the last Friday of the month continues to be a Heathrow staple. We look forward to a spring menu change for al a carte, keeping our traditional items of Par 3 and Country Club Salad, burgers and wraps while adding in seasonal flare as designed by our excellent Chef team. From a project perspective it has continued to be a very busy period to start 2019. We have finalized exterior patio and pergola projects at Heathrow CC and The Legacy Club that have added significant F&B space for our members and guests and created a Memorial Garden at Heathrow. We are installing new flooring through the Racquet Club and have resurfaced the pool deck to get ready for a busy swim season. We have procured our company food truck and mobile bars for our busy summer season of pool beer, wine, liquor and summer handheld food menus. We are motivated to continue to improve our facilities for our membership and we will be looking at additional projects based on feedback at the club to provide additional improvements as the year continues.
Membership remains very strong at our clubs. With great retention and a fantastic group of members calling our clubs home we are very blessed. Additional demand continues to showcase our excellent golf courses, conditions and product as a whole.

A great shot to foil a net-hugger is the topspin lob. Topspin lobs, when hit correctly, are extremely hard to run down due to forward spin when it hits the court. The back swing is basically the same back swing for a regular topspin forehand which gives it a disguise factor as well.
A topspin lob is best hit with a western or semi-western grip. First you must start with the racket face slightly closed. To close the face, point your palm toward the court. You want to swing straight up the back of the ball and fan the wrist like a windshield wiper. The key is going to be racket speed when hitting the topspin lob. Don’t be afraid to swing fast! Try to hit just the back quarter of the ball with the sense that you are pealing the ball straight up from below the ball, or a whipping motion of the back of the ball. Aim up like you are hitting the ball up through a goal post.

Ken is the Founder, Aquatics Director - American Swim Coaches Association® [ASCA] Level 3 and Head Coach of Longwood Aquatics the fastest Certification - ASCA® Certified Stroke Technician growing USA Swimming® year-round club team in - National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association Central Florida. He is also the Head Coach of the Member (NISCA) Lyman High School Greyhounds Swim Team. With - Certified Masters Coach with United States Masters over 15 years of experience, Ken has coached state Swimming® [USMS] champions and record holders, junior national - Certified CPR, First Aid and Safety Training for Swim qualifiers and finalists, high school All-Americans Coaches and college scholarship athletes. SUNDAY COUPLES BACK IN THE SWING
We are glad to say that our Sunday Couples is back up and running – each Sunday we will have Sunday Couples events. Our tee sheet will be blocked for our Couples from 11:00 – 12:00. To sign up simply call the golf shop and let us know, we will make your starting time for you. Each week we will have different formats. The entry fee will be $10 per couple, we will score the event and pass out the winnings. Our new Assistant Professional Zack will be handling our Couples events. Please remember to call the Heathrow Golf Shop to make your starting time. THURSDAY NIGHT SCRAMBLE
Our yearly Thursday night Scramble has started on each Thursday. Please call the Heathrow Golf Shop on the Thursday of the event. The Scrambles will be a 5:30 shotgun start.

Each newsletter we will be highlighting a golf staff member so you can get to know us better. This month our selected Employee is Keith Groom. As we all know, Keith has been with us for quite some time and does a tremendous job for us! Keith is married to his wife Carolyn, celebrating 22 years of marriage. They have a 32 year old daughter named Kerith and a 27 year old son, Kramer, who both reside in Huntington, West Virginia. Keith has been in the golf business for 13 years, working at Legacy for 10 years and here at Heathrow for 3 years. Other than Keith’s passion for the great game of golf, he also enjoys weekend getaways at the beach, working out at Athletic Apex, and enjoying great restaurants with his wife, Carolyn. Keith takes care of all of our re-griping, so if your clubs need an overhaul, please see Keith. Keith also is an excellent instructor and teaches many of our members. If your game is down a bit… call up Keith – he is great to work with!

Mike is capable of ordering any type of grip or shaft that you need, bend the loft/lie on all 14 clubs in your bag. We have our professional staff on site daily to provide club fitting, lessons, which is suited for all skill levels - whether that’s a beginning golfer experiencing that excitement of hitting a ball in the air for the first time, or a committed player learning a swing change that saves a stroke and lowers their score.

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE
HEATHROW COURSE MAINTENANCE NOTE
As the days get longer and warmer, Spring is finally here! We are happy to put the cold weather behind us. Your maintenance team will be extremely busy cutting grass, spraying weeds and killing bugs.
Our transition from winter ryegrass should be seamless. Last fall we decided to only overseed par 3 tees and the driving range tee. This looks to be the right move for Heathrow to give you the best conditions all year round.
April 16 will be the first of three greens aerifications. This process is necessary to relieve compaction, promote root growth and allow air to get into the soil. It also improves drainage and is essential for healthy turf. This process is followed up by topdressing to fill the holes and smooth the green.
When possible please pair up on golf carts to reduce traffic, fill divots, repair ball marks and rake your bunker. If everyone helps, we can all enjoy a better golfing experience.

LEGACY COURSE MAINTENANCE NOTE
During the winter months, the golf course becomes very compacted from golf carts and maintenance e quipment. For this reason we will begin slicing tees, fairways, and roughs in April. This operation will provide much needed compaction relief to the turf until we are able to aerify those areas in the summer months.
This year, our greens aerification dates are as follows:
May 7th and 8th - Deep verticutting and 1/2” hollow tines with topdressing sand
July 10th and 11th - Deep verticutting and 1/2” hollow tines with topdressing sand
August 20th and 21st - Mild verticutting and 1/2” solid deep tines with topdressing sand

WHAT A GREAT START TO 2019!
We already have many great tournaments in the books for both courses here at the Heathrow Legacy Club! In January we had our Legacy Tough Day and Heathrow Club Championship, followed by the Ryder Cup in February, the Legacy Member-Member in early March, and the H/L Member-Guest at the end of March!
All tournaments have been great with friendly competition and fun had by all. Make sure to check for the next upcoming tournaments!

The ladies of the HLLG like to play golf & socialize, but we also like to give back to the community.
Our Holiday Event was a big success. Both 9 & 18 hole players played a Par 3 scramble, had a nice lunch & collected gifts for Impower - Holiday Heroes of Central Florida.
Sharon DeLuca did a great job chairing the event. Over $2000.00 of cash & gift cards & an entire SUV filled with gifts were delivered to their office. They were so excited to receive our generous gifts. It truly feels good to give back to the community.
HLLG Holiday Scramble & Fundraiser
HLLG Angel Ball Breast Cancer Fundraiser Our 2nd fundraiser of the season took place on Valentines Day. We played an Angel Ball game & sold pink balls to be used in the competition. We raised money in support of the Gina McReynolds Breast Cancer Foundation. This is the 2nd year in a row that we supported the organization & we were pleased to send them a check for $1,015.00!
Our Member Guest Getaway was a huge success!
2019 Heathrow Legacy Ladies Golf Member Guest
We started at The Legacy Club on Wed March 13th & finished at Heathrow on Thurs March 14th. We had 8 flights with 32 teams, followed by a shootout.
Congratulations to team Sharon DeLuca & Diane Harris, for their 2nd win in 3 years! Runner up went to the team of Jeanne Henderson & Mary Ann Darbelnet. Well played!

The 9 Hole league has been busy planning their Margaritaville 9 Hole Invitational .
It will be held at Heathrow Country Club on Thursday, April 4th.
Area clubs are invited to come & play a 9 hole scramble, have a nice lunch, great tee gifts & prizes. It is sure to be a great time!

We are excited to work with the 1st Tee Program of Central Florida, which assists the youth golf program in the area. The HLLG league, spearheaded by Collette Boardley-Wakefield, will collect used golf items to be donated to the program. We will be collecting through the rest of our season & hope to have a representative from 1st Tee there on our closing day, May 16th at Heathrow. Want to get in on the fun?
Our season runs Sept – May & we play every Thurs. We alternate courses each week. We have both 9 & 18 hole leagues. Handicaps & skill levels vary. We recently hosted the annual Catering Conference for all the Concert Clubs and got to share all kinds of trends and ideas. Using superfoods in menus with antioxidants, fiber and protein from pea, hemp chia, quinoa, cranberries, cherries, blueberries, spinach, broccoli, beets, cacao, black garlic and many more were brought up. Any superfood list is sure to contain an “exotic fruit” such as acai berry, noni fruit, dragon fruit, rambutan or pomegranate. If you haven’t tried our Mediterranean Quinoa Salad or Pomegranate Mousse – call me for a sample!
A few station ideas that are fun that I have been doing are Mini Pie Bars, Smores bars with different chocolates for melting and Gourmet Popcorn Bars with 10 flavors of FUN. Brings out the child in all of us. As always I look forward to seeing you around the Clubs and helping you plan your next amazing celebration.
