Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes. As this has no bearing for the assignment to macro-areas, multiple mappings have been retained. 1There are another couple of hundred languages which are attested but for which our database currently lacks coordinates. -

The Emergence of Tense in Early Bantu Derek Nurse Memorial University of Newfoundland “One can speculate that the perfective versus imperfective distinction was, historically, the fundamental distinction in the language, and that a complex tense system is in process of being superimposed on this basic aspectual distinction … there are many signs that the tense system is still evolving.” (Parker 1991: 185, talking of the Grassfields language Mundani). 1. Introduction 1.1. Purpose Examination of a set of non-Bantu Niger-Congo languages shows that most are aspect-prominent languages, that is, they either do not encode tense —the majority case— or, as the quotation indicates, there is reason to think that some have added tense to an original aspectual base. Comparative consideration of tense-aspect categories and morphology suggests that early and Proto-Niger-Congo were aspect-prominent. In contrast, all Bantu languages today encode both aspect and tense. The conclusion therefore is that, along with but independently of a few other Niger-Congo families, Bantu innovated tense at an early point in its development. While it has been known for some time that individual aspects turn into tenses, and not vice versa, it is being proposed here is that a whole aspect- based system added tense distinctions and become a tense-aspect system. 1.2. Definitions Readers will be familiar with the concept of tense. I follow Comrie’s (1985: 9) by now well known definition of tense: “Tense is grammaticalised expression of location in time”. That is, it is an inflectional category that locates a situation (action, state, event, process) relative to some other point in time, to a deictic centre. -

THE PHONOLOGY AND MORPHOLOGY OF KISI George Tucker Childs ABSTRACT This dissertation describes the phonology and morphology of the Kisi language, a member of the Southern Branch of (West) Atlantic. The language is spoken in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. After the introduction in Chapter 1 and an overview of the language in Chapter 2, I discuss the phonology of the language. The phonemic inventory has implosives, a full series of nasal compound stops, and a set of labialvelars. The vowels form a symmetrical seven- vowel pattern, and length is contrastive. Syllable structure is , C(G)V(V)(C), where the only consonants allowed to close syllables are the liquid and two nasals. Kisi is a tonal language with the following tones: Low, High, Extra-High (limited distribution), Rise, and Fall. -

Sawka SIL International® 2016 SIL Electronic Survey Report 2016-001, December 2016 © 2016 SIL International® All rights reserved Abstract This survey was conducted as part of a larger research project to investigate the language development needs in Zambia. The language group investigated in this particular research is the Twa of Zambia’s Southern Province, Itezhi-Tezhi District. Fieldwork took place during two trips to the Twa areas, one in December of 2012 and one in August of 2013, as well as other contacts with Twa speakers. The main purpose of this research was to research the differences between the Twa of the Kafue Flats and neighboring languages such as Ila and Tonga. Twa is currently listed as a dialect of Tonga in the Ethnologue but the Twa people as well as the Tonga and Ila peoples consider Twa to be a separate language. An additional purpose was to determine the language development needs among the Twa that would include vernacular publications. Some additional information that was collected about the Twa culture is also included in the report. Information was collected mainly by questionnaires, wordlists, and a dialect mapping exercise. The lexical comparisons indicate that Twa of the Kafue Flats is more closely related to Ila than to Tonga. Twa could possibly be closer grammatically to Tonga than to Ila; however, a grammatical comparison of the three languages was not part of this research. -

Abstract This practice based PhD project investigates the language ideologies which surround the specific multilingual context of rural primary education in Zambia. The project comprises of a creative documentary film and a complementary written submission. The fieldwork and filming of the project took place over 12 months between September 2011 and August 2012 in the community of Lwimba, in Chongwe District, Zambia. The project focuses on the experiences of a single grade one class, their teacher, and the surrounding community of Lwimba. The majority of the school children speak the community language of Soli. -
