Welcome to the 2016-2017 season of “Jazz At The Beach.” Our first campus concert Bob Cole Conservatory Donors of the year features two of our award-winning big bands, namely the Concert Jazz The Bob Cole Conservatory of Orchestra and the Studio Jazz Band. After only a few short weeks together, our new Music at CSULB recognizes and thanks the following donors for their generosity to and returning jazz majors and participants have been busy preparing for multiple our students and programs. Many of his works are what Frieda Rapoport Caplan we affectionately call “flag-waivers,” suitable for opening or closing a concert program Ley Malilay with unbridled excitement. However, this work is a departure from that trend as Don Shigemi Matsumoto & Marty Stark (In memory of Moriichi & Suki Matsumoto) gives an almost orchestral treatment to this ballad. Samuel W. Warner The Jazz Division of the Illinois Music Educator’s Association commissioned this chart for the 2008 Illinois All-State Jazz Ensemble. The straight 8th Latin jazz feel provides Impressario ($5,000-$9,999) a perfect setting for Tom’s inventive melodic lines and refreshing chord structures. In Sally & Larry Curry addition to being a great jazz writer, Tom was a frequently featured trombonist with Marvellee Cariaga (In memory of Daniel Cariaga) the Maynard Ferguson Band. Kathleen Reams Hausen Long Beach Community Concert Association PRELUDE TO SUMMER / Dr. Charmaine Meyer † Gene Thorne Renaissance Charitable Foundation Alternating between the bossa style and a Brazilian funk feel known as partido alto, this Mary F. Thoits engaging groove captures an authentic rendering of these popular styles. A beautiful Mike and Arline Walter winding melody for horns is featured and solos are provided by Matt Heath—guitar, John & Alaine Weiss (In memory of Bernice M. Weiss) Tanner Olivas—alto sax, and Evan Hamada—trumpet. 2 BUT THANKS FOR ASKING / Jeff Jarvis This infectious shuffle is dedicated to the late Larry Swist, a gifted recording engineer and studio designer best known for his work with Chuck Mangione. This chart features a variety of solos and a stop-time section featuring all the wind sections. An exciting shout chorus follows, ending with an open drum solo from Patrick Malone before the final chord. You’ll hear solos from Matt Heath—guitar, Liam Robertson—tenor sax, and Chris Cockrill—baritone sax. INTERMISSION / CONCERT JAZZ ORCHESTRA HOURGLASS / Neil Slater Mansfield University Jazz Ensemble commissioned this engaging work, and it was recorded by the 1994 University of North Texas 1:00 Lab Band. This bright swing original requires the big band to interpret the composition with excitement and agility, but with a light touch. Neil founded the jazz program at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, and then went on to serve as Director of Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas for 27 years until 2008. You’ll hear solos from Alex Flavell—piano and PERSONNEL Brandon Johnson—guitar. STEPHANIE’S SONG / Gene Thorne STUDIO JAZZ BAND CONCERT JAZZ ORCHESTRA Set in an alluring 6/4 time signature, this lyrical ECM style original by Gene Thorne provides striking contrast for big band concert programs dominated by swing tunes. Gene’s 30+ years with the US Army Jazz Ambassadors as their chief arranger and Alto Sax—Tanner Olivas* Alto Sax—Spencer Wiles*^ baritone saxophonist produced a wealth of great big band charts, this one being no Alto Sax—Tim Struven* Alto Sax —Erik Larsen* > exception. The lead sax part is written for soprano doubling on flute, with the other Tenor Sax—Liam Robertson* Tenor Sax—Wes Perry* ^ saxophonists doubling on flute, clarinet, and/or bass clarinet. Alternating between Latin funk and samba styles, this harmonically sophisticated original employs a steady, infectious groove despite some irregular phrase lengths and metric shifts.
