The documents relevant to the colonial period are, of course, preserved and often well edited. But the imprints of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that reflect local devotions and syncretist rituals,' religious iconography and poetry, and .the pastoral campaigns of the various churches and sects, went uncollected and unnoticed until the early 1960s, when Ivan Illich began to search for them and to collect them in the CIDOC Library of Cuernavaca.

  • The Catholic Church and Populist Leadership in Juan Perón's
Collecting Consciences: The Catholic Church and Populist Leadership in Juan Perón’s Argentina and Salvador Allende’s Chile A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Renée Crown University Honors Program at Syracuse University Emma Louise Fountain Candidate for Bachelor of Arts and Renée Crown University Honors Spring 2020 Honors Thesis in International Relations Thesis Advisor: _______________________ Dr. Gladys McCormick Thesis Reader: _______________________ Dr. Francine D’Amico Honors Director: _______________________ Dr. Karen Hall Fountain 2 Abstract This paper identifies populism’s key actors and addresses three essential relationships. These actors are the political leader (the president), the religious leader (the Catholic Church), and the led (the people). The relationships examined here are those between the political leader and the led, the political and the religious leaders, and the religious leader and the led. This framework is then applied to the distinctly populist presidencies of Juan Perón in Argentina and Salvador Allende in Chile. Evidence for these cases comes from an assortment of sources, from contemporary accounts of leadership to recent reflections. Perón began his regime in 1946 with strong relationships on every front, but lost the support of the Catholic Church and subsequently the support of the people by the mid-1950s. Allende’s populism was a development of Perón’s populism. In the two decades that separated the Argentine leader from the Chilean, an activist movement within the Christian community undermined the Catholic Church’s political pull. Therefore, Allende’s weak relationship with the Church and powerful link to the people was politically successful. This comparison of Perón and Allende offers valuable insight on the viability of different modes of populism.

  • A CALL for LIFE and the FAMILY Conclusions of the Meeting of Politicians and Legislators of the Americas
A CALL FOR LIFE AND THE FAMILY Conclusions of the Meeting of Politicians and Legislators of the Americas <In accord with the Apostolic Constitution> Pastor Bonus, <the Pontifical Council for the Family "strives to have the rights of the family recognized and defended in social and political life and sustains and co-ordinates initiatives for the protection of human life from conception and in favour of responsible procreation"> (Pastor Bonus <art. 141.3). In the light of this competency, in Mexico City, from 6 to 8 June 1996, the Pontifical Council convened the Second International Meeting of Politicians and Legislators of the Americas on "The Dignity of the Family and Life in the Politics and Legislation of the Americas: Reflections in the Light of Evangelium Vitae". A first Meeting of European Politicians and Legislators was held in Varese, Italy, 8-10 March 1993, on "The Rights of the Family on the Threshold of the Third Millennium". This was followed by a Meeting of Politicians and Legislators of the Americas in Rio de Janeiro, 28-31 August 1993, on the same theme. At this Mexico City meeting, there were about 130 participants coming from the world of politics and legislation as well as the Church, from all the nations of the American Continent, who approved the following Conclusions.> For Life and the Family! A Call to the Americas Notwithstanding all the massive changes taking place in our great continent, one reality remains at the heart of every nation: <the family>, the basic, primordial and vital cell of society. In the family, founded on marriage, human life is conceived, born and nurtured.

  • Liberation Ecclesiology: Praxis, Theory, Praxis T
LIBERATION ECCLESIOLOGY: PRAXIS, THEORY, PRAXIS T. HOWLAND SANKS, S.J. Canisius College, Buffalo, NY. and BRIAN H. SMITH, S.J. Woodstock Theological Center, Washington, D.C. ¡HIS ARTICLE explores the relationship between the Church's self- Τunderstanding and the way it acts in a given social context. The underlying methodological assumption, borrowed from the sociology of knowledge, is that there is a dialectical relationship between any theo retical knowledge (theology, in this instance) and the sociocultural context of that knowledge. A body of knowledge is both a product of the lived experience of a community and a factor in determining that lived experience. Liberation ecclesiology is a good example of a theology that has been produced out of a definite social context with the conscious intent to bring about a more just social order and a more authentic church within it. The context is in a dialectical relationship with the theology. This dialectical process has several phases, however, and develops over time. A new social and religious context gives rise to new directions in theological reflection. This reflection clarifies and illuminates many of the religious dimensions of the experience, casts them in a theoretical framework, and relates them to elements of the tradition. In turn, the reflection once it becomes systematized feeds back on the religious and social context and frequently acts as a legitimizing or clarifying element for further development of the experience itself. As the religious and social contexts continue to evolve, further implications emerge both for norms and structures of the Church as well as for theological knowl edge.

i Catholic Elite Education in Chile: Worlds Apart Cristián Cox Patricia Imbarack In: Rosa Bruno.Jofré and Jon Igelmo ZAldivar (Editors) (2017 –forthcoming, September) Catholic Education in the Wake of Vatican II. University of Toronto Press: Toronto. ISBN: 978-1-4875-0 06-5 Introduction Latin America is a region with some of the greatest economic and social inequality in the world. At the same time, its cultural identity is inseparable from the Catholicism that has permeated its culture since the Conquest. This historical and cultural conjunction brings deep questions about the Church and its educational institutions, as well as the efforts made to understand it, which can be said to have started with Max Weber’s classic The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. For there can be no greater tension between, on the one hand, the doctrinal bases of a faith founded on values of fraternity and communion among brothers, and on the other hand, socio-economic structures which the Catholic Church, since Vatican II, and especially through documents of the Latin American Episcopate – from Medellín (1968) to Aparecida (2007) – condemns as a social sin. Vatican II increased this tension, in particular for the religious orders running elite educational institutions throughout Latin America and also in other parts of the Third World (Smith, 1982), affecting their educational mission in ways that this chapter will analyse based on the experience of Chile. With regard to this outlined socio-cultural backdrop, we intend to examine how different schools – historically serving the Chilean elitesii – deal in their mission statements with socio-economic inequalities and marked patterns of social segmentation present in society; how they thematise dialogue between faith and culture; and how they conceive of, or do not refer to, preparation for political life.

In the years preceding Allende’s election, an ideological current emerged in Chilean religion and politics that emphasized a focus on social justice. This swell of leftist ideas created a tension within both the Church and the country that continued into Allende’s presidency.
