Lesson Synopsis Students will describe the culture of by creating a poster that illustrates a celebration in Texas. TEKS

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) listed below are the standards adopted by the State Board of Education, which are required by Texas law. Any standard that has a strike-through (e.g. sample phrase) indicates that portion of the standard is taught in a previous or subsequent unit. 4.19 Culture. The student understands the contributions of people of various racial, ethnic, and religious groups to Texas. The student is expected to: 4.19A Identify the similarities and differences among various racial, ethnic, and religious groups in Texas.

4.19B Identify customs, celebrations, and traditions of various cultural, regional, and local groups in Texas such as Cinco de Mayo, Oktoberfest, the Strawberry Festival, and Fiesta . 4.19C Summarize the contributions of people of various racial, ethnic, and religious groups in the development of Texas such as Lydia Mendoza, Chelo Silva, and Julius Lorenzo Cobb Bledsoe.

Background Information

Many groups came to Texas with their own culture including language, foods, work patterns, religious beliefs, and ideas about government. Groups learned to live and work together in communities. While Texas culture is a blend of all of the different ideas and customs, Texans celebrate their cultural diversity.

GETTING READY FOR INSTRUCTION

Teachers are encouraged to supplement and substitute resources, materials, and activities to meet the needs of learners. 3. Provide students a letter or legal size piece of paper and map pencils to create their poster. Another option could be to create the poster using Word or Publisher on the computer.
